TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.
Killua Zoldyck | Hunter x Hunter
[The arrival was the most startling part. One minute he's walking through the doorway with Gon, ready to train so the both of them could get stronger, and the next? He was surrounded by blue. The transitions are hazy, and that's what puts him the most on edge. It couldn't have been a poison, he's resistant, so what--
His body tenses in the middle of the crowd and he darts back in a flash, pressing his body back against a building off to the side as he scans the crowd with Gyo. Paranoid. He's being paranoid, and he realizes it when not a single shred of aura can be found. His heart is still beating fast, suspecting the worst, getting ready to run. Was the offender hiding his presence? Did he already get away? And where was this anyway? Gon isn't here. But a woman is staring at him... Is she so powerful that she can hide her strength like this? It was hard to say. All he could do was go along with her, for more information at the least.
By the time all's said and done, Killua is roaming the streets with the rest of them as casually as ever. That fear from earlier is gone, and his hands stay stuffed into his pockets. Wide eyes look left and right, taking in the mix of old and new, and if someone sticks next to him long enough or seems to be following them, he'll address them easily enough.]
Hey! Is there somewhere I can get a map around here?
2/3
[By now, Killua is enjoying a delicious malt along with his walk through the city. There are a lot of things to look at, and he's trying to find his best friend, after all! But he's yet to find the best discovery in this city. It happens when he's passing a shop and the door flies open behind him with a happy squeal, and two happy children fly right on out on hovering skateboards. His eyes widen at the sight, and he waits for them to disappear around a corner to backtrack to the shop's window, face pressing in closer to admire the display case right there.
A new model, by the looks of it. But the fact that it can hover at all! His free hand presses against the glass as he leans closer, but shortly after all his oggling, his face falls in disappointment (and minor irritation).]
There's no way I'll be able to afford that thing anytime soon...
WILDCARD
[I'M REALLY BAD AT OPEN PROMPTS BUT TAG ME]
you forgot to mention that he's an assassin
From the reflection in the window, wriggling fingers rise up behind Killua's shoulders and-before he can react-clamp down over his eyes. Cheerfully, Gon's voice sounds from behind him.] Gotcha! [He laughs and his hands slip away. Quickly, he trots to the side to avoid any blows that might be coming and that's when he sees it.
A hoverboard.
With a slow, silent gasp, his eyes light up and he surges forward to press his hands against the window.] So... cool! -Killua! [He barely even reads the price before his attention flits to his best friend, eyes dancing with excitement.] Let's get it!
you mean it isn't written all over his wide-eyed face???? next time I'll say Killuall of you Zoldyck
[The hands are a surprise, but they instantly alert him of the boy's presence, and it's overwhelmingly familiar. Sure enough, the voice sounds, and as Killua turns, a happy, relieved grin slides right into place.]
I've been looking everywhere for you! [But he was able to sneak up on him like this... It kind of crushes his ego a bit. Was he so paranoid that he completely lost sight of his surroundings? Then, all these non-nen users... Maybe it just threw him off. But he'd have to be more careful.
The suggestion is nice. Freeing, almost, and he wants to go along with it... But shouldn't they be training? Or wait--]
I wonder if this city has somewhere that we can fight and make money, too! Did you find anything, Gon?
omfg why didn't you make that his username
[He trails off. Killua should be able to fill the rest in. With a belabored sigh, he groans, pressing his head against the glass.] Finding clues is so haaard! [Irritably, he puffs out his cheeks, frowning until he needs to suck in a new breath. When he inhales anew, it's as if all his worries are forgotten. He pivots his head back towards Killua.] Did you find anything?
because gon stop please
That's probably it. Blinking a few times, he reaches into a back pocket to pull out the folded map he'd managed to swipe during his walk.]
Not really... But I have this map. This should give us a good idea of where we are, and it'll make dealing with this 'hero' thing and getting back easier, too! [Killua seems proud enough about that, unfolding the thing and offering half of it for Gon to help hold. Once that's done, he points at a spot on the map.]
This is where we are right now. What do you think we should do?
but all of his ideas are so good
There's a shop giving out free malts here. Did you get yours yet?
[If so, they could still try and get more. Maybe even make it a competition.]
hooters
I had one just a little while ago. [At this point, he's just staring at his friend, trying to pinpoint what all these red flags are signing to. It didn't make sense yet.]
Say, aren't you worried about the time limit we've got? Being pulled into this is a total waste of time as it is! We should come up with a plan to get back, you know?
[His fingers run over the tokens in his pocket. They need to get back and deal with that, too, if they even wanted a chance at heading back to find Kite... He shifts his weight from one leg to the other, tilting his head a little.]
they have good wings??
[He taps a finger on his chin, regardless, trying to think of some hidden limitation to his victory that he had forgotten. This time when he can't think of it, he simply gives up with a casual shrug.] No, I think we should be good.
[But that leaves another problem. Thinning his mouth into a line, he makes another guttural sound in thought and looks to the map.] We probably shouldn't go back if you've already had one though... [What to do... what to do... Oh! He points exuberantly to the water's edge.] I found a beach when I was looking for clues earlier. It looked like there was a lot of fun stuff around it. We can go there.
unsure
[It feels like time stops when he hears that reasoning. Greed Island... What did he mean by that? He was speaking as if they'd only just left! There didn't seem to be any memories of Kite, or the Chimera Ants, or even the agreement he had just made before they stepped through that doorway. While he'd understand if he ditched bandages or rested up quickly, the fact that he was so adamantly looking for Ging...
He thinks they just left Greed Island!
He has to try not to react here. It's just a long stare at the map as he considers it, fingers frozen in place with one hand holding the map and the other slowly drifting away from their location. How did this happen? What was he supposed to do? If he had to explain what just happened...
He eyes the place that Gon had pointed to, feeling cold.]
Ah, sure. [Maybe he could find some things out while Gon distracted himself. If they had a bit of a break it would be okay too... Just as long as he figured this out without bringing him back to those memories in the worst way.] Let's go.
don't unsure me missy elliot
[It's all he says, watching Killua intently. It's a silent question between them. One that asks "what's wrong", "are you okay" and a myriad of other questions they never needed to ask. Not for awhile, at least.]
don't tell me what to do darth paul

Hisoka! [Tch... When did he get there? Had he been following him? Or was this by chance?
After Greed Island and meeting a foe that far surpassed Hisoka in strength, somehow it was easier for those thoughts to dissipate. Instead, there's a rather persistent image of Hisoka calling himself a 'hero', gaudy cape and all... His expression lessens in seriousness as he tries to rid himself of that. Standing up straighter, he shrugs his shoulders.]
That's none of your business. [But, being a bit of a hypocrite here:] Don't tell me you're registered here or something...
no subject
Why isn't it? Shouldn't we fellow heroes stick together? [Smiling wide. Aww, Killua doesn't seem to of missed him at all. And here he was happy to see yet another familiar face. He could really get used to seeing more and more.]
no subject
No way! [He has a right to be a brat to this guy, alright? It seems like his question wasn't answered, either. Well, he expected that much.]
Besides, I can't really picture you as a hero... [Just saying.]
no subject
People here don't just register to become heroes, really, think about it. You're a smart boy. [They register for convenience, because the government almost forces them to. Making anyone- even children- register in order to be protected, supported? Given jobs at such an age? It's quite ridiculous. "Hero" is for anyone willing to adopt the title, but it most definitely is something separate from 'registered'.]

It takes him a few seconds to come to his own conclusions. Registered... It must be a way to track people like them who have come in from the outside. They act like it's a choice, but every sign he's run into so far has pointed to it being nearly necessary... Was that it? It was too early to say what he really meant.
But away from the general and back to Hisoka here--]
So either you're not registered as a hero, or you're not registered at all. [Is that it???]

[He's been scoping out the city as well- you never want to be caught in completely unfamiliar territory after all- when he spotted that shock of white hair, similar in color but a lot more fluffy than his own. With what he last remembers... He won't lie. It's a relief to see the boy unharmed and alright.]
[So Kite approaches with a slight smile on his face, tipping his hat up.]
I DONT HAVE AN ICON FOR THIS YET SCREAMS
Kite...
[It's barely a whisper when he says it at first, eyes wide as he turns to greet the man. Sure enough, there he stands. Alive. But how?! He wants to be skeptical, to be wary of this being some sort of trap by the enemy, but his fists clench hopefully and he can't help himself from saying it louder.]
Kite! [You're alive!
It has to be him. Nothing seems off... Nothing seems dark. If Gon could see this...]
I DON'T HAVE A ICONS FOR A LOT OF THINGS, S'OK
[Yet here he is, arm and all although that had been less of a surprise. It's the same hand he reaches down to rest in Killua's hair.]
[Yeah. He's here. He's alright.]
You did good. I'm glad to see you're alright. What about Gon?
wails
This was him, right here. So why was his stomach still tight with doubt?]
...He's fine. The idiot isn't going to stop at anything to go back and save you. [Slowly, he turns back to face Kite, looking him over.]
I had to knock him out to run away. ...But how'd you survive? [Slowly, the realization sets in, and his eyes drift upwards to the arm touching his head. Wait--] Didn't...
[He reaches up to take it in his own hand and examine it.] Didn't you lose this?!
gross sobbing
[They shouldn't go for his sake- but then his hand is being grabbed and Kite brings himself out of his own thoughts.]
Ah- I did, yeah. [He lets Killua inspect it all he likes. Kite's already done it himself and it's... normal, as far as he can tell, besides the telling scar hidden under his shirt.] It seems this country's military managed to reattach it before I woke up.
We should probably take the rest of this talk to somewhere not as out in the open.
[They'll get weird looks if they have more of this conversation right in the middle of the sidewalk, he's pretty sure.]
lots of gross sobbing
He nods firmly, dropping Kite's arm and shoving both of his hands into his pockets. They can talk inside.]
Where should we go?
also have you eaten yet
[It's the simplest solution guaranteed privacy, after all, for them to go to either of their assigned houses. There are other places, but he hasn't had time to look through the entire town himself.]
