TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.
Jennifer Keller | Stargate Atlantis | 02
Here, however, she had no control over the adoration, and while she tried her best to be gracious, she still did all she could to not attract notice, so that she could get a chance to step back, observe, and regroup. The malt shop provided a perfect opportunity, but first she had to actually get there.
And due to the crowd, this meant some bumping into others.]
Sorry! Sorry...

What he had quickly found out, even back in El Paso, was that the thing he had the most difficulty dealing with was the press. Smiling and backing away only got him so far, which, come to think about it, is a pity, because that's still his most frequently used technique. All that means is that when he sees Jennifer doing her level best to push her way through the crowd (and when she subsequently bumps into him), he feels nothing but sympathy.]
Don't worry about it, [he says, then after a moment's thought, drops his voice enough not to be overheard by the crush of the crowd.] But if you wanna get away from these guys, I wouldn't go into the malt shop. They're totally expecting you in there.
[That's an offer to tell her where she can go, if she chooses to take it.]

Oh, really? Guess that makes sense... a trap to corral everyone into one spot and make it harder for them to leave. [A malt had actually sounded pretty good, but she wasn't going to trap herself in there.] ... Know something better?

[Jaime tilts his head at her in an invitation to follow him, flicking his wrist to keep it facing his body in a smooth, practiced motion and sidles through the crowd with a relatively cheerful,] 'Scuse me, ma'am!
[They don't pay him much attention, just another teenage boy in a city filled with them. It's all about the way you move, and he's been here long enough to look perfectly at home.]
no subject
[She does hesitate a little, but this kid does seem to know what he's doing, so she follows behind him.]
So... I take it you've been through this before?

[He sends a grin her way, trying to reassure her that he had been just as bad with the crowds in his day, if not moreso.]
I'm Jaime, by the way. It's nice to meet you, uh, Dr...?
[Normally she'd be 'ma'am', but considering she's got a title, he figures he'd better use that instead.]
no subject
Dr. Keller, though just Jennifer's fine, too. I don't insist on my title being used outside the clinic.

[It always feels a little weird calling adults by the first name after being used to sir and ma'am and Mr. and Ms. his whole life, but he'll adjust soon enough.
He ducks around the corner and indicates a shop with a flourish.]
Ta-daaaa. It's off the main road, so it's not so busy.
[The store is still fairly busy, but pleasantly so. It's a brightly lit malt shop with a charming chalkboard menu hanging up in the back, offering all sorts of sweet delights alongside greasy diner food.
They're common sights around here. Jaime doesn't like a lot about this place, but he's got to say that he digs the malt shops.]

[Jennifer stifled a giggle at that, since from what she understood, there were many heroes here. She stared at the menu board.]
Really... I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. It's been nothing but rush, rush, rush ever since I found myself here. I need to take a bit of a breather.
no subject
Anyway, it's no problem. [He waves one hand, dismissing it is nothing.] We've all been there.
no subject
[She then nods, looking thoughtful.]
I'm not sure whether I should be relieved or worried that this happens often enough for it to be old hat for people who live here, though.
