Tom isn't exactly new to being instantly recognized on the street. He does admittedly have a very distinct look, and that's hardly an accident. Still, he'd been hoping to be less recognizable here -- and even if the world did insist on knowing him on-sight, he at least would like to have actually done a service to them first. Here in this world he's far too new to have contributed anything.
Of course, he muses quietly as some citizens chose to turn their backs to him and speak in hushed tones, it doesn't hurt to have a little positive attention where he can get it, does it? Sheepishly, he waves back when citizens greet him, and answers as politely as he can, looking a little flustered at the attention.
05.
"Oh, no, it's...!" Tom's fingers trace nervously over the edge of his wallet, and he suddenly remembers how empty it is here compared to the resources he has back home, and the shopkeeper is so eager to offer the discount. In fact, he seems about ready to slash the price further. But the shop is so small, and Tom can see the construction being done to repair it from battle damage, and he can't bring himself to accept it.
"It's all right. I'm happy to pay full price. No, really, I couldn't possibly -- !"
