OH MY GOD YOU GUYS

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place, where locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. An upset voice wonders aloud: "More of them, when we already know they can't protect us? That's just painting a bigger target on the city's back!" However, they're quickly hushed with a judgmental: "They helped save the cities, and it's the Soviets you should be angry with anyway! The imPorts are here to protect us!"

    02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Many people are out and about taking care of their regular business, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.

Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about spies. "How can we trust any of them now?"

    03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is not as friendly and its citizens tend to go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their help in overthrowing the trespassers. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.

    04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities; loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment.

[ She gets a sharp look for a second or two, at least as sharp as it can be behind his goggles, before he comes back with: ]

Six.

[ And while Six is not great at adjusting to Florida, he's pretty okay at following instructions. The tables are all chained up in no time, and by then he's calmed down enough to let his curiosity take over. ]

Why in the hell would someone steal a table?
bindsthedead: (Art-Notice; Almost a smile)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2016-03-29 03:19 am (UTC)(link)
I see. Then you're going to feel awkward for some time- it's not the norm in this world, or in any other world imPorts come from, as far as I know.

But I'm curious- how did such a custom start in the first place?
rathercommon: (chatting)

[personal profile] rathercommon 2016-03-29 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Tables are expensive. And useful. And sometimes people just want to be arseholes.

[ She shrugs blithely. Then, curiously: ]

Is that a normal sort of name where you're from? Six?

[personal profile] xfiled 2016-03-29 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
[It's so hard not to lose his temper here. But losing his temper means he won't think, and that's a deadly mistake around here.]

And what is that, exactly? Don't tell me being a hero, even you won't lie so obviously.

[personal profile] xfiled 2016-03-29 03:27 am (UTC)(link)
And what are they, the powers of a cat?

Gotcha. Still, I might go incognito for a little while.

Wow, that sounds terrible.

[The hate for him and Ladybug was shortlived so he has a hard time imagining it being a regular thing.]

So no statues dedicated to you or anything like that? Do you have a cool secret base?
irassible: (Grayshadow :: (28))

[personal profile] irassible 2016-03-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
[ Insert an implied bitch face here. ]

It's good enough.

[ Then a hipsterly wave of his fingers. ]

You wouldn't be able to pronounce my name if I told it to you.
wifeonmars: (We're doing episode 81?)

[personal profile] wifeonmars 2016-03-29 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
No, Beast Boy's like... my little brother. Y'know. Gar? About this tall.

[She indicates with her hand about how tall her Beast Boy is.]

And pretty sure you can't be on the team once you're forty. That's more Justice League age.

[personal profile] thingtowaste 2016-03-29 03:39 am (UTC)(link)
[ It started due to the presence of people with powers in his world. Workers showed up, they wore gloves so they didn't use their abilities on people, the trend spread so that everybody wore gloves.

Like hell Barron's going to tell her the truth, though. If what she says is true and this world's got so many people with such different powers...well, it'd be smart to keep a few things hidden for now. Besides, he can see that line of questioning: workers wear gloves, are you a worker, what can you do. And he's keeping that information close to his chest right now.
]

Hell if I know. It's probably something like high heels where it started a few hundred years ago and now nobody really knows why people do it.

[ He looks like Aglionby's dark corners. He looks like the kind of person The Ganseys (that's the Congresswoman-to-be and II) wouldn't want to hear of associating with Dick. He looks like an unlit match pressed against flint. Helen's smile is fixed in place as she pats the little girl's back and sends her on her way with an eclair instead of an icky cucumber sandwich. ]

"Girl Gansey?" [ Girl Gansey arches one brow with disdain so delicate it could almost be complimentary. ]

It's Helen, actually.

[ She folds one arm over her torso, cutting herself off from her conversation partner. Her other hand still holds the rejected sandwich. ] You'll have to pardon me. Refresh my memory. You are? [ Each sentence is punctuated forcefully, but not unkindly. Aglionby boy, hm. ]

Whoa... [He finds himself staring at those fangs, they're scary but neat. Why couldn't fangs be a part of his costume, they'd really go with the whole cat theme. Then again, he figures he'd probably end up biting his tongue if that were the case.

The pun has him grinning until he realizes she's probably calling him small. He's actually taller than many of his classmates, thank you very much! Perhaps a little above average for his age.
] I'm not that small, you're just really tall.
pawdonnemoi: (🐾 It just wasn’t worth it)

It isn't really as simple as that, as far as who's given them, or why. You could ask people who've been here for years, but you'd get theories, at best. No real answers.

[ She presses her lips together, pausing for thought. Kanaya has plenty of theories herself, being one of those who's been around for years. But theories are hardly something to weigh on a fresh arrival. ]

We were brought here empowered to be heroes. What that actually means for anyone of else individually, and what was meant by it when it was first told? That's up for interpretation.

[His explanation sounds plausible enough, and Sabriel accepts it easily enough, and keeps the conversation going.]

I see. I'm sure you have many questions- I know I did, when I first arrived. Surprisingly enough, what our hosts have told you is true- it's just not the entire story.

Oh hey, you probably won't be able to find one in the stores. But there are lots of people who could probably make one for you? You just have to ask nicely and not, y'know, obviously be a bad guy.

[She doesn't look like a supervillain, at least.]

[ Six makes an irritated sound remarkably close to a growl. ]

They can take their jobs and shove them where Althyk never looks.

[ He shakes his head and leans against the brick wall at his back. ]

Steal us and then ask for favors? Arrogance.

Right, so you know about the war. But -- from what I've seen, yeah. I've had a couple of people I know revive. It's -- weird. I'm not really much of a scientist, so I can't speculate on the method itself.

[personal profile] thingtowaste 2016-03-29 04:00 am (UTC)(link)
Well hey, mind giving a guy some Cliff Notes, then? [ he asks, flashing Sabriel a winning smile in the process. After all, any information would be good. The only problem would be trying to remember it until he found a notebook to write all this down in. ]

The face that gets right into Rictor's in response is a familiar one. Maybe not the most distinct, but it's hard to miss that large M-shaped brand over his eye. If there's any recognition of the behalf of Jamie Madrox, though, it's hidden behind the twisted expression of anger on his seething face.

"And why can't you-", he seethes, somehow managing to make a vowel sound come out like a hiss. It's actually sort of impressive. "-Watch where the Hell you're going. I'm walking here, you piece of-"

He doesn't get a chance to finish that insult. Instead, the Madrox starts fading away, almost like smoke as it merges back into the other Madrox that was standing slightly behind it the whole time. Once the dupe made from their impact is re-absorbed, Jamie Prime speaks up.

"Sorry about that asshole, I wasn't looking and it's my f-" He stops. There's the recognition. "Rictor? Is that you?"

There's a pause. He should say something to fully convey how appreciative he is that one of his co-workers is here with him in this strange, new world.

Instead, he blurts out: "You look like crap."

ursawhiner: and I am not one to argue. (He called it "ethically repugnant")

heropa!

[Dipper's just cutting across the park with his sousaphone in two, when he pauses. There aren't any bakeries, but that's definitely the smell of... croissants? He takes another look around, seeing only some guy on a bench, but there's nowhere the smell could be coming from and oh god.]

Isn't this the sign of a stroke?!
bindsthedead: (Art-Notice; Almost a smile)

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2016-03-29 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
Well, let's see- I don't want to burden you with a load of history, so I'll just focus on the cities.

Maurtia Falls has the biggest crime problem, the police- not just them, most city officials- there are corrupt, people there generally aren't fond of imPorts and the ambassador keeps trying to pick a fight with the government. RISE is headquartered there, but we operate in all the Porter cities.

Heropa's got the most imPorts, and it's practically a magnet for imPort related nonsense- no wonder some of the locals have gotten sick of us.

De Chima and Nonah are both all right- they generally like us, especially Nonah.

There are some imPorts you should watch out for- most of us are decent enough, but there are a handful of monsters.

[She laughs softly.] I would have said something more like "miraculous!" [Considering that, you know, brain death is irreversible by definition.] It's as extraordinary as a cure for death in general.
