Mr. Gold is...far more of a patient and understanding man than he might appear at first. He's quite witty, our depths of knowledge have little overlap, and there's that aura of mystery as well. We're alike in some ways with the burdens we share, vastly different in others...

And it doesn't hurt that he's attractive as well.
