Crane is... interesting. Lucien has him pegged for a certain type of frustrated mage you see every so often in Tamriel. Someone who has a Thing they like to study. They don't want to do anything else, they just want to study that Thing, but all those damn Guild rules keep getting in the way. So they hole up somewhere and fill the surrounding landscape with strange smells and the occasional zombies. There's been a bumper crop of those in the past few years, due to Archmage Traven's decision to ban necromancy.
The Brotherhood recruits those types every so often, but without the Night Mother's approval, he's quite reticent to try doing the same here. You only occasionally get a rogue mage who's willing to look at fellow murderers as peers rather than test subjects.
