things that also can be seen from space: Dustin's utter failure at being able to articulate his gigantic crush on Max in ways that aren't terrible. stop stalking her, Dustin. stop being mean to her, Dustin. seriously.
anyway! he like, really?? REALLY likes Max, in the romantic crush way, and he doesn't know how to deal with that. without Lucas around that means he's free to move in, which is great for him, except Dustin has no goddamn clue how to even start. he has tips from Steve, yeah, but he's still kind of bad at this. he's trying this friendship thing first so he can at least have some ground to stand on and not feel like he's all wobbly and weird, but yeah he's kind of really bad at covering it up. if she did notice and tell him to back off with his romance, if he ever gets around to confessing, he'd acquiesce bc he also cares about her as a friend, and he doesn't want to lose that friendship. she's awesome and she beats people's high scores in Dig Dug and she skateboards. like. why would he want to lose a friend who could do all those?
but also he's nursing a huge crush and he's Dying over here bc what the hell is romance? he doesn't know how to do that. does taking your crush to sort-of dates at food trucks count?????
