TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

He smiles politely at the other, gesturing at their surroundings.]

I seem to have taken a wrong turn, [Or 67 wrong turns, take your pick.] Do you happen to have a map that I can borrow off of you? I would return it! I just need to find the nearest port city!

A map... who carries a map on them? [Sheesh, this guy.] Can't you tell we're by the ocean just from smelling the air?

This is Florida. You can get a boat anywhere here.

[Jonathan isn't one to be easily frustrated with others, if he has a goal in mind he's gonna get there somehow. Even if it means potentially losing your fingers in a knife fight...]

Well, that is true. But there are only so many ships that will take me to New York and I'm looking for a woman by the name of Erina. She's probably in a port city waiting for me by now.

[Erina? That was the name of... no, nevermind, that's just a weird coincidence.] You want to take a boat to New York? Gimme a break... you're really going all-in on the old-time factor, aren't you.

If you really need to find this lady so badly, just call her telephone number.

Telephone number? [He is so confused, Erina isn't some kind of number you dumb punk. I mean-] She has no such thing, and I am not sure of the address we're staying at for our honeymoon... we just got married, you see?

Even if you get to New York City, if you don't know anything about where she is you'll never find her. There are [how many people is it, these days? Bah, it doesn't matter] millions of people in a city like that. You can't go around knocking on everyone's door.

[Oh. Well, this is really a different kind of world then. And then it dawns on him that he, Jonathan Joestar left his loving wife all alone in some strange New York. How ungentlemanly of him.]

How could I have left Erina alone like this! There... there has to be something I can do!

[Shrug.] Take a plane to New York. Try your luck, if you want.

[He starts walking away. It's obvious he can't help this guy any more than he already has.] But if she's anything like Erina Joestar, she'll be just fine.

[He doesn't feel defeated yet. Although he still has absolutely no idea how to get to New York, he'll find another way. Maybe some other stranger will be kind enough to help him.] Wait! You know Erina? Erina Joestar, you've met her? That's- that's who I'm looking for!

[He pauses as he realizes he hasn't introduced himself to the stranger.] I'm sorry, I never gave you an introduction.

My name is Jonathan Joestar

[PAUSES

and turns around, very, very slowly. Everything the man just said is impossible.] I've never met her. She died decades before I was born.

But she was my great-great-grandmother, so I know all about her. And I know about my great-great-grandfather Jonathan, too.

[Pointing at him.] Who you obviously can't be. [Even if it would explain the old-timey attitude.]

On one hand; wow he has a happy family with Erina in the future?? On the other hand.... if what this punk is saying is true... does that mean this man is his great-great-grandson??

[Turning to face Jonathan, now in the full-body point. His coat is flapping dramatically. He sure can strike a pose like a Joestar.] My name is Jotaro Kujo. My mother was born Holly Joestar, and her great-grandmother Erina died in the company of her family when she was just a girl!

I don't tell lies! [Well, not USUALLY. He's not lying now, at least.] Jonathan Joestar can't be alive, so you can't be him!

[He's not even going to bring up that Dio has Jonathan's body and that he never got to see his family. That's a bit too pitiless for even him.]

[His face drops. Not necessarily because the job wasn't finished- yes, it's unfortunate that lives were lost for a somewhat fruitless effort but, Jonathan still cares about Dio.]

Huh... well- [He can't really say anything, the fact that Dio is still alive, and once again being a total fucking jerk, is quite shocking.]

He's put a curse on the Joestar bloodline. If we don't stop him, your great-granddaughter will die from the strain of her awakened Stand.

[The handshake is quick in a business like way, but also faintly warm. Like Jonathan is so proud of you Jotaro even though he just met you. Wow.]

Well, no one can be expected to live over a hundred years. [That's just silly.]

It may be hard to believe but if we both claim to be from different times then the present day, there is some truth to our testimonies...

[Which means Dio is very much alive and being an evil bastard again. It fills Jonathan's heart with much dread and disappointment. Dio, why can't you just die and move on...]

[He lets go of Jonathan's hand, shoving his own hand back into his pockets.] It's not contradictory. It's just bizarre.
