now don't be rude

TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

    02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

    03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

    04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Hyouka doesn't know where he is and there are soldiers. Instantly, he's on the defensive. Fortunately none of the guns are drawn so his programming doesn't kick in, but he's still drawn his beam sword and stepped away from the smiling woman. He looks around frantically:]
Mother? Father? Where are you?! Teika, Yuuka, Ginka --
[Who feels up for trying to calm down the robot before he exhausts the name list? Or, y'know, before he actually swings that thing. Yeesh.]

02.
[Hyouka did not like this place. Hyouka wanted to go home, Hyouka wanted his family. After calming down and being debriefed he had soared up in the sky to see if he could spot them from the air -- no such luck. Land garnered as much success, as he could barely ask any questions through the crowd of people that gathered. Apparently no one had seen a lion, a jellyfish or a god girl with purple cat ears. The rest of the family's descriptions were too vague to even hope for results - he learnt that the hard way when someone had thought they'd seen Father.
In the end he slipped (ran very abruptly) away from the crowd so that he could process the situation.
And that's how the ~7ft robot ended up hunched over in the malt shop gazing woefully at his drink. (Hey, it was free.) Granted, the lack of facial features makes it hard to tell...

[Rei's never been to America, much less Florida, and it might have been interesting to take a look around, if it weren't a school night, or if he hadn't just been kidnapped. He's got a knot of fear in his stomach, because how can one find oneself surrounded by foreign soldiers and not be scared, but he's not panicking yet. Panicking wouldn't accomplish anything, and no one seems interested in hurting him. Yet.

The last thing he remembered, he was on the train home, after practice, trying to knock some water out of his ear while Nagisa went on about something. He lost track a few topic changes ago.

And now he was here, and some soldiers were talking. Finally, he leans toward the closest person, who also seems to be suitably out of place, and speaks to them, just barely above a whisper.]

Excuse me, do you know what's going on here?

[[2.]]

[The soldiers weren't much help to him. They just told him that he had to help protect people with his powers (whatever that meant; somehow he felt like it didn't mean the butterfly stroke, physics, or his ability to arrange beautiful dinner plates based on color theory) and given him a bored apology that he couldn't go home.

Well, there had to be someone around here who could help him!

So he starts tapping random people on the shoulder, or doing other things to attract their attention.]

Excuse me- I was wondering if you could- See, I really need to get home- It's a school night, I have a test to study for-

[No one is very interested in helping him, instead moving toward more interesting looking heroes or going about their business. He stops and puts a hand to his chin.

Is it because his English isn't very good? The soldiers seemed fine with it. Maybe Americans are just that rude after all.

Still, he can't give up! He has to get home.

That's when you feel the tap on your shoulder, and if you look, you'll find a very intense looking high schooler staring at you from behind red rimmed glasses.]

I'm sorry but could you please help me I need to get home I have a test in two days and my parents don't like it when I break curfew and I have swim practice tomorrow so could you please just let me borrow your phone.

[He got all that out really fast.]

[[4.]]

[Rei's given up on getting home any time soon at this point, so he might as well make the best of it. He's wandering around Cape Canaveral, a bottle of water someone was kind enough to give him in his hand.

He's just taking in the scenery when he hears the sirens of the police cars. Turning to look, he sees the kids in the street.]

Hey! Watch out!

[Maybe if he warns them, they can move in time? Without a plan, he starts to run.

And realizes after a second that he's moving fast. Even when he was still on the track team, he's never moved this quickly on land before.

In a blink, he finds himself with the kids, the car bearing down on them. He grabs both of them, then runs again, pulling them out of the way.

Once everyone is safe, he gets a "Thanks, Mister," and some applause for his trouble, but he only pays attention long enough to be polite. He's too busy trying to process what just happened. He moved so fast.

After giving it some thought, he shakes his head.]
It must have been the adrenaline that made me feel like I was going fast. That's all.

[But he knows, when he does the calculations in his head, that he never should have been able to close the distance that quickly.]

[The ocean. It might be a common sight in this world, but to her it's a sight that means something. It meant no walls, no titans, no people screaming for their lives. It meant freedom.

It's the first time that she had ever seen this big, blue, endless sight. Her jaw dropped upon seeing it, her eyes widened as she began to beam. The feelings of fear and uncertainty were all forgotten now, replaced with pure awe and happiness. With all this sunshine and laughter from kids on the beach, it was hard to imagine that she was just out in the middle of no where with Farlan and the rest of the corps, fighting titans in the blinding rain.

She continued to stare at the shoreline for several seconds before she broke out into sprint. Her survey jacket, boots, and harness were left in the trail behind her as she yanked them off and ran straight into the water. She disappeared under the waves for several seconds before the red hair resurfaced, rubbing her eyes fiercly.]

Ugh! It's cold!

[That doesn't stop her from dunking under again.]

And salty! Ew! [Even if it was disgusting, she was still smiling.]

Lumina | FFXIII: Lightning Returns

[personal profile] chaoticwhimsy 2014-07-26 12:53 am (UTC)(link)
2

It had been about an hour since Lumina had been dropped off in Cape Canaveral and told to get her bearings. While the other newcomers the child had arrived with were being swarmed with attention, most people were giving Lumina a fairly wide berth. Probably because of the shadowy cloud of chaotic black darkness that was seeping into the air around her, partially obscuring her lower body from view.

Which wasn't to say everyone was avoiding her. Other kids seemed oblivious to the possible danger (and the disapproval of their parents) and were running over to ask her to take pictures with them. And the pink-haired girl was mostly behaving herself, giggling and looking friendly and innocent despite the darkness she was hauling around.

She had almost made it to the shop that was supposedly giving away free drinks, but had been waylaid by another group of kids wanting a picture. Thinking this would probably be her last run, she told them all to hold still for a moment, her grin sly.

The chaos child just couldn't resist a bit of showing off, and as they all waited, she vanished in a swirl of crystalline light and shadowy darkness, reappearing perched on top of a nearby street light, to the 'oohs' and 'aaahs' of her little audience. So of course, she posed while they all took their pictures, unable to hide her giggles.

Wildcard:

Lumina had at least been polite enough to wait for the field in the middle of the park to clear before she'd claimed it as her own, letting the chaos swirl around a bit to keep too many people from wandering over as she set her silly little plan in motion. She stood in the center of the grassy area and closed her eyes, then thrust her hands forward into the swirling chaos.

From out of it, three strange little creatures danced into being, each one prancing in a slow circle around her. Lumina giggled as she crouched down, tugging each monster closer and whispering something to it. When she had given her secret instructions to all three, she slipped past them, out to the edge of the field, leaving the three strange little monsters to keep dancing in their seemingly harmless circle as the chaos dissipated from everywhere but Lumina's immediate vicinity.

"Okay!" She shouted once she was clear, partly to keep the monsters focused and partly to draw the attention of people around her. "Do it!"

The three little monsters gave soft, scratchy chittering noises and then stopped, like three points of a triangle. For a few moments, nothing happened, and then a burst of crackling golden energy shot up from them, getting about fifteen feet into the air before turning into sparkling, shimmering lightning bolts that crackled across the grassy section of the park before harmlessly dissipating.

This was followed by swirling blue energy that twisted to rain ice shards down in the air right around them, which was followed by another burst of lightning that reflected off all the ice, making the creatures and the air itself seem to shimmer. A moment later, a burst of crimson fire that sent tiny shockwaves through the air.

Lumina was grinning and clapping along with the (mostly...) harmless display, glancing around at the people to see whether they'd stop to watch in happiness or run in surprise. Either reaction was acceptable to her, really.

The whole thing went on for about ten minutes, until finally the magic (and the three little gremlins) all faded away into nothing, leaving just the giggling child plopped down on the edge of the grass looking far too pleased with herself.

starbuckaroobanzai: we are investigating some paranormal shit (I'm not gonna ask)

Dana Scully | The X-Files

[personal profile] starbuckaroobanzai 2014-07-26 01:16 am (UTC)(link)
01.
[The transitions are dizzying, lights and shapes pushing through the fog of confusion but barely registering at first as real. Dana Scully is a doctor; she recognises, dimly, the aftershocks of trauma, even if she can't place the initial event, or gauge its intensity. The symptoms are even more familiar in light of her work on the X-Files; that she has, over the years, had the opportunity to grow familiar with this disorientation and confusion is not something she recalls with fondness, though strangely she detects in herself a sliver of pride, and uses it to keep her head up.

At first she thinks it might save her, but then it seems that maybe it won't have to.

Her jaw is set in preemptive intransigence as she faces down the woman approaching her. Military fatigues, and for a moment she wrestles with sparring impulses. Her childhood tells her to respect the uniform, but more recent experience tells her to mistrust it. Suspicion wins. Lately, suspicion always wins.
]

What the hell is going on here? Where's my partner?

[Her voice isn't calm, but she's not shouting. An angry front covers her profound insecurity, but only if it isn't excessive.]

02.
[Frankly, Scully thinks dragging people out of their lives and depositing them here, leaving them to their own devices, is at best excessively optimistic. She doesn't put much stock in the idea that it's because the military has no right to detain her; in her experience, that doesn't mean much as long as nobody's watching, and sometimes even then. To the credit of the locals, they are watching, if not for the reasons that they should be.

As she'd wandered, taking stock of her surroundings and letting the initial shock of the forced relocation abate, she'd done her best to hide her new branding from prying, curious eyes. Now she examines it herself as she sits on a park bench, wearing an expression of unhappy concentration as she stretches the skin above it, running her thumb over the new marks. It doesn't feel like the tattoo she'd chosen. It doesn't commemorate anything, mean anything. She'd opted for hers when she thought she might be dying, to reclaim a body that had already begun to fail her, and still these new markings set her more on edge. They make her feel watched, and she's disgusted at how familiar that feeling really is.

Maybe that's why she fixates on it, to start. The rest is so strange, so near to the edge of unbelievable that that thread of familiarity calls to her. Or maybe, maybe it's that now, even given the unlikely chance to start over, she hasn't been afforded autonomy over herself.

[ Another one, a woman mentioned idly to her friend as they passed Levi on the pier. He had only heard because they were incessantly loud and in shot but was content to filter out the background noise of a crowded pier until the woman's friend asked if she meant another one of those 'kids in the green cloaks.'

At that Levi turned sharp on his heel, stopping dead in his tracks and straining to catch the last snippets of their conversation as they walked off. Having caught something about the shore, he knew exactly where to go. Levi elbowed his way through the throng of people ambling along to slow for his liking, ignoring the murmurs of the crowds moving along the pier that built up into a dull roar as he jumped over the wooden banisters and dropped down onto the shore below.

Breakers beating against the sand and lapping at the heels of beach-goers milling about the shore, Levi eyes narrowed as he scanned down either side of shore. In the distinct he spotted the familiar glint of the 3DMG catching the sun, poking out of the sand half-hidden by a jacket and harness haphazardly thrown over it. Knowing where to go, Levi beat feet and dashed down the shoreline. Finding the gear left abandoned for just anyone to take, Levi bent down to look over the jacket to see which branch they were from as he made not to give whatever idiot dropped it and ran a dressing down.

And salty! Ew!

Levi jumped to his feet as if the jacket in his fingers burned. A shock of red hair shot up threw the waves and in that second the world had fallen away and time stopped. Laughing and choking down the first mouthful of saltwater she tasted in her young life with the endless sky above here, there she stood. Frozen where he stood the equanimity he held on to tightly slipped off and his mouth dropped as the air in his lungs evaporated.

[Isabel was still rather blissfully unaware that she was being talked about or stared at. So what? It's not like that was any different from back home. She was always looked at a bit weird and rumors were spreaded about her, Farlan and Levi for being 'underground thugs'. She was use to that and she was rather skilled at ignoring it.

She continued her splashing and giggling in the water until she heard her name, even if it was spoken softly. She paused, her hands still in the water as she was about to splash her face. The voice was familiar and a source of calming relief to her. She was happy to know that she wasn't alone here. She looked over her shoulder to him, her smile widen even more so.]

Big bro!

[Even if she had just seen him only a few moments ago, the fact that he was here with her to share this amazing sight was enough to make her heart soar even higher. Without another word she dashed out of the water, tripping slightly as the waves kicked her in the back of her shins. She paused only for a moment as she neared him, not wanting to hug him since she was wet and she knew he wouldn't like that.]

Big bro, do you see this?!

[Of course he did, unless she was dreaming. She hadn't really cut that option out yet. Even if she was, she didn't mind it. This was the happiest she had ever felt in her life.]

[In his wanderings, Rei ended up on the beach. Despite his less than favorable experiences in the sea, he still liked it. It was beautiful, after all, and it made him feel a little more calm after all that had happened today.

He takes off his shoes and socks, then rolls up his pants so they won't get sandy (a futile effort, really, but he tries) before walking out onto the beach. He comes down to the waters edge, not really minding the cold as the waves splash over his toes.

He's content with only getting his feet wet, because this might be the only set of clothes he has for the foreseeable future, when a girl he didn't notice at first suddenly splashes out of the water, saying something about how salty it is, and splashes his pants.]

[ It was a nice day for a walk in the park, Connors had to admit. And really...he was spending too much time cooped up in the lab. He needed to get out and smell the metaphorical roses. Or, in this case, go for a walk in the park.

Hand in his pocket, Connors's eyes were mostly pointed towards the ground, scanning the area for fauna, any sort of small creature over looking at the sky, the trees or other people in the park. However, he looks up at just the right moment, turning to watch Scully stare at her wrist, moving her thumb over what he could only assume was her tattoo.

Small smile on his face, Connors walked over towards Scully.

[Of course he's kept his uniform on. He's not going to abandon that so lightly. Technically, he's on duty. He was on duty back home. Although--not exactly the kind of duty he's supposed to be on, going by the actual rules, but he's not concerned with that fact. His duty is above the rules, and he still has pride in his service. So, he's wearing a military jacket emblazoned with a unicorn, walking carefully down the street, inspecting everything as he tries to get his bearings. It's strange, and it's frightening, but he does his best to maintain control.

The locals are enthusiastic, but he'd rather not socialize, not at a time like this. He nods politely, but he doesn't smile or seem to enjoy the festive atmosphere.
]

No, thank you. That's not necessary. Excuse me. Do you know where we go to work?

[Yes, he's only sixteen, but he's in the military, and he wants to figure out what's happening so he can get back to where he's supposed to be. Although, if there's something truly wrong here... He should find out about that, too.]

4.
[The vehicles are alien and intimidating. He's wary of them and sure to stay out of their way, crossing the streets only in the designated areas, in the designated way. He can understand why such rules are in place. The children of this town, however, are nowhere near as wary. Familiarity has bred incaution, and Marlowe worries about the children on their bizarre floating boards, as the drivers of the cars can be equally incautious and don't pay attention. So Marlowe keeps an eye out, because someone has to.

When he sees the speeding car, his first reaction is to run forward, although he has absolutely no way of stopping the car. He's frightened, for the children's sake, but he's also furious. How dare someone operate equipment with such wanton disregard for human life? His hands clench into fists, and suddenly, there's something there, clasped in his hands: the hilts of two long, unfamiliar blades. What--? He doesn't have his weapons here. He dimly remembers the talk about his powers, but he can't stop to think. He lunges forward and strikes at the car with one of his blades, fully expecting it to bounce off. It doesn't. It cuts into the metal and tears it, the blow knocking him off his feet but also badly damaging the car, which swerves and skids to a halt.

Bruised but still angry, Marlowe gets to his feet, fully intending to confront the driver, the strange blades still in his hands.

[The sun bears down on Koltira, and he squints in agitation. The warmth doesn't bother him; he hardly feels it, but the light illuminates his pallid, cracked skin in great detail. His armor stands out, too, glowing of its own accord and shimmering darkly against the harsh, midday glare.

In fact, despite the muggy summer weather, little rosettes of ice continuously form and dissolve beneath Koltira's boots as he walks forward, and remnants of snowflakes still glisten in his white hair.

Blood, fresh and dark, stains his neck. The curtain of his hair disguises most of the wound, and his expression -- cold and inscrutable -- suggests that he isn't worried about it, regardless. His new surroundings are of much greater concern.

When the soldier approaches him, he recognizes her as someone of military authority owing to her formal address. The uniform is foreign to him, but it's a uniform, regardless.

His mouth twitches as she directs him towards the car.]

Is there a war? Are we to be conscripted?

.4.
[Once he's set loose on the streets, Koltira finds that his best option is to explore. He hasn't done much with this project when he comes upon the car chase and the two kids positioned directly in its path.

The way he sees it, Koltira has few options. He could destroy the speeding car, perhaps causing an even greater wreck and very likely ending the driver's life. Or, he could cause the children some surely mild discomfort and spare them a much more grisly fate.

He goes for option two.

Without a word, Koltira extends his hand towards the skateboarders. One after the other, spectral energy shoots forth from his palm and wraps around each kid's throat. Koltira jerks his wrist back, manipulating the energy like a taut string, and the kids are yanked off of their skateboards and towards his position on the sidewalk.

It's a terrifying rescue, to be sure, and the kids are coughing and rubbing their necks in fear afterwards, but Koltira is satisfied.

He saved their lives, after all.]

It was a small confirmation, but an important one all the same; she was a solid form in his hands, and very much alive. When Mike came back, Levi had quietly convinced himself that the his being missing in action was for once not a cruel mercy on the part of whoever was left with the task of counting the dead. He had never seen Mike's body, had never been forced to watch his life be snuffed out in before his eyes.

Six years; six years and Levi had done everything short of giving his friends a proper burial and instead left them behind to forever sleep under an endless horizon. And yet here she was, smiling and smelling like the salt of the ocean. He didn't ask her if she was hurt- it was pointless. Or when she had gotten here- she wouldn't have cared to remember the specifics, she never did.

Instead he pulled back, a bottle pulled out of his work bag. Plastic cap twisted off harder than necessary and tossed into the sand without care and the bottle shove at Isabel. He's been on edge arriving here, and when he catches sight of Isabel flailing around like that (distinctively loud and distinctively red-haired), it unnerves him. Hu? Oh! Thanks! [She happily took the bottle from his hands and took a long gulp. The fresh water tasted even better as it wasted the salt out of her mouth.]

Big bro-- [She wiped her mouth with her sleeve as the bottle of water lowered away from her.] What's going on? Are you alright?

[You are more quiet than normal and it's weirding her out.]

[HEY! How rude is that?

He tries to get out of the way, but ends up tripping on an unfortunately placed conch shell and falls back on his rump, which just lets him get even more soaked by a wave coming in. Between that and her kicks, his outfit has had it for sure.]

...It will take me forever to get the sand out of these. [And they'll still smell like sea after. Which isn't the worst thing, but...]

[ There were always signs the next shipment of the Porter's chosen had come through and left to navigate the wilds of an impossible situation. The crowds milling around random strangers was always a giveaway, and always why Levi wished his work didn't bring him through Cape Canaveral on an almost daily basis. Without fail traffic would be brought to crawl, the locals tossing aside all respect for personal boundaries and treating newcomers like curiosities, and the ensuing fights breaking out which the fire department and subsequently Levi would have been called out to deal with along with the police.

Only this time he had only been brought out here not on business but because he intended to stop buy one of the few cafes that dotted the pier whose tea did not completely offend his pallet. As he moved down the street he spotted people gravitating towards one person as if being sucked into a black hole. This of course alerted him to the presence of another imPort and, either out of charity of his own nagging sense of curiosity, Levi moved through the crowds.
]

Break it up! [ Levi spoke deep through the diaphragm where it carried over the crowd which began to disperse, withering under his sharp grey eyes cutting across like the drop of a blade His eyes fell to Marlowe, or rather, the green unicorn emblazoned on his uniform. Expression already set to something unpleasant it was a sight to see it sour somehow. ]

[ooc: erubvedhyfrv NO THIS IS TOTALLY OKAY!!!!]

Ehhh?

[FARLAN STOP RUINING HER FUN. Can't you see she is trying to make friends with the fishes and such?]

Oh, stop worrying! I'll protect you!

[See? You have nothing to worry about.]

Besides, didn't you hear? [She stands up now, the water splashing at her waist as she points her thumb to her chest and gives off a cocky grin.] I'm a hero now!

[That was all she really understood from that woman talking when she came here. But at least she gets points for paying attention?]

So-- [She grabs his shoulders and shoves him back into the water.] Don't worry!

Eh?

[It then that she heard someone behind her, and she finally noticed that her splashing might be bugging people.

Oh well. Not gonna stop her from having fun.]

Just come in!

[Why are you even in the sand, the water is better!]

o2.

[Everything about what had just happened is rattling around in Thomas' skull like a nest of angry hornets; all of this goes against all that he understands about the nature of his own life and his powers, against all that he has worked for, against all that is right. Others having powers is an alarming prospect, certainly, but even more alarming is the fact that the government has files on him.

No government has had files on his true identity for a good fifty years, at the very least.

Though he may be going through an existential crisis inwardly, Thomas certainly doesn't bother showing it. He regards the crowds with an easy smile, speaking jovially to men and women and children alike as he strolls down the street as if he's got nowhere else he'd rather be. Eventually he manages to duck away from the crowds to find a shady spot underneath one of the shops' awnings, his final concession to the oppressive heat beyond carefully folding his suit jacket and neatly carrying it in the crook of his arm.

If you, fellow import, happen to be doing the same thing, he may feel inclined to remark,]
This is certainly the most polite kidnapping I have had the pleasure of experiencing.

[ooc: All right GOOD!]

[Sorry, he is the NUMBER ONE FUN RUINER, you will just have to deal with it.]

I'm not going to stop--

[Thinking, he was going to say, not worrying, but suddenly, she's shoving him in the water and he's spluttering. He rises again, scowling now. He really doesn't understand how she can be so happy, but then, she doesn't seem to be--aware of--things. Well, it's good to see her here, so he can't be too mad, but he is somewhat annoyed.]

Don't you ever listen? They want us to work for them. You know, like the Survey Corps? Is that really what you want to do?

[She knows that involves work, right?]

Because you've got to actually do something to be a hero. It doesn't matter if people just call you one. And they said the same thing to me, too, you know.

[Not that he wants to be a hero, thank you VERY much.]

[HEY! She can work....sometimes. She actually liked killing titans with the corps! So why not save people here?]

Yeah yeah-- [She dunks back under the water and appears back up beside him now with a scowl on her face.]

Hey! Wait you're saying I can't be a hero? I can too! I'll be the best!
