Lan Zhan was about two seconds away from drawing his sword in defence of Wei Ying's forfeited chicken before he was mercifully pulled away towards the elevator.
He glowered back at the crowd as if he was seriously considering going back to rescue the spiced meat, but got distracted once he was presented again with buttons outside the elevator door. He pressed both.
He stood next to Wei Ying, close enough that their shoulders touched, and turned his head to look at the man, his expression softening slightly. He didn't say anything. He never would. Even if he had the words, that didn't mean they were welcome. But he could look, at least.
The elevator dinged and pulled his attention away.
