TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

"Besides, they're probably just excited to see someone new."

The look on her face, perhaps, is one of muted confusion, but it quickly becomes something more guarded, the walls she has so carefully constructed for herself sliding up as they always do. She searches his face, tilting her head just slightly. "They say that a piece of your soul can be taken, each time one is taken." The 'they' is unimportant. Again, it feels like echos from past conversations, with a man she still feels drawn to, but knows she can not have, lest her world crumble at the foundations, once again.
"I do not care, if they are excited to see someone new," Her chin raises up at that comment, glancing at the strangers before turning her attention to this man, once again. "I am not some creature in a cage, to be looked at like a curiosity."

"They're kids. They don't know any better." Said as a statement of fact, not a dismissal. Dorian had mixed opinions about children. From afar? They were fine. But as soon as those snot-nosed, sniffling drippy little brats got too close to him, he almost instantly found himself in a situation of not knowing what to do.
"There's no shame in being looked at, though. Especially for someone as attractive as you are." His grin turned into a smirk, a smirk that was a plain and simple sign of Dorian being a little shit. It was true, though. She was beautiful.

But then again, she has never been 'proper' in any way. And she has paid the price for her inability to do as she should--to search for the images behind the mirrors.
When he speaks again, again she feels the echos of the past, curling up her spine, speaking to her. She knows that smirk, even if it belongs on a different face.
"And you flatter." She smiles softly, quirking an eyebrow. "Well, I might add. But flattery, none the less." She takes a step towards him, moving further away from the people she has no interest in. "And do I get the name of such a flatterer? Or do you think it is better to remain mysterious."

He wasn't so sure about the last one, though. There was something interesting about that woman, something that hinted she might enjoy mystery as much as he did.
"I'm Dorian," he idly responds, blissfully unaware that this woman knows a different him from a different time in a different place. "Dorian Gray."

--nothing is impossible, Vanessa. You are a product of such things--
Like the rare moments in her life, she is unsure how to proceed. To think perhaps that he is simply someone who shares the name, something coy and light...all the while knowing that there is too much about him that is familiar to think he is.
So letting out a breath, she does her best to steel herself, chin rising slightly. "I know a man, with your name. Who speaks as you do. Curious, isn't it?" And no name has been given, on her side; she feels too vulnerable for that, for now.

Its her statement that makes him frown. He's gotten quite familiar with the concept of different worlds. After all, it only takes talking with one superhero or one giant robot for the alternate universe theory to become alternate universe fact. So while she does know him, she doesn't know him (at least, that's what he's saying himself to calm the feelings of annoyance that how dare the universe meet him up with someone who knows him already, how dare that happen when he's worked so hard to cultivate an image here, an image that is rapidly crumbling). But the idea of this leverage the woman has over him, the fact that she knows his name and his words while he's relatively clueless about her...that's the annoying bit.
Still, now more than ever, he couldn't let his true confusion and annoyance show around this woman. "Really...how interesting. Of course, the problem here is, I don't know anyone quite like you--and I would have remembered you, if we were to meet."
