TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

Well, you look good. For nine hundred.

[Which he can hardly believe, but on the list of unbelievable things Kieren's heard today, Kara's age doesn't rank anywhere near the top. He offers a small smile, but sobers after another moment, gaze lowering.]

I've killed good people, too.

Aren't we all kind of your own, here? Everyone with--[Invisible airquotes:] powers?

Everyone says that.

[She seems more amused than annoyed, though, despite the fact that everyone really does say that. It's either that or a joke about her skincare regime, but she figures it's fair, all things considered.]

There's a difference between having powers and not being human. Changes how you are. [she taps the side of her head, to indicate what she means.] You don't gotta carry that guilt like a human would, about the people you killed.

[It might not be all that reassuring, but it's the best she can manage.]

[Kieren'd offer her some of his cover-up mousse, but it doesn't seem like she needs it.

The conversation has shifted into the realm of the uncomfortable, for him, and he exhales slowly, brows pinched.]

I think the guilt keeps me--[Human? Not the word he's looking for. He's still learning to live with it, at any rate, and he's not sure how he feels about the fact that she's protected terrible people, killed good ones too.

Nine hundred years is a long time. Everyone's bound to do some terrible things, in a lifetime like that.] I'm just trying to be a good person, I guess.

[Most of the time, she knows better than to guess someone's age based on their appearance, considering her own, and that means she's learnt how to guess without that guidance. And this kid really does seem like a kid.

It's the only thing that keeps her from being too unkind.]

Good people are usually the ones that end up dead.

[It's not a joke about his current state. She means dead dead. Forever.]

[Kieren mulls that over, quiet for a moment, thinking of the people he's lost--all the people he's seen go over the last few years. Good and bad.]

I don't think it's that simple.

Sometimes it is. The terrible people are the ones who watch out for themselves.

[Good people are too kind, too trusting, too willing to sacrifice themselves for someone else. That's what gets them dead.]

You must be a good person, then, if you're willing to look out for me.

[How did her own logic get her into this mess??? She looks perplexed for a moment before smoothing her expression over.]

I ain't nothing. [She just means that she isn't good or bad, not that she's actually nothing.] Morals are for humans.

[It's weirdly endearing, somehow, but Kieren's always been the sort to look for the good in other people.]

I don't think morals are such a terrible thing.

[Says the woman who's job was literally the judge the dead based on how honourable they were.]

Nine hundred years and they never did you any good? I find that hard to believe.

[Awfully long time to have no use for them. Though Kieren wonders if he'd feel the same, after that many years on earth.]

[She used to be nice once, but she was young and stupid then.]
