TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ ah, what a lovely day in Cape Canaveral. the sun is shining, she's just recently been abducted to an alternate universe in which she is presumably now to remain for the forseeable future and they're offering her free beverages. there's travelling and then there's this, and Alice has always been one to do things in style.
well, she's got time. plenty of it if inferences are to be believed. so, since today is a day of excitement on the part of the natives, and since she has days and weeks and who knows how much longer to explore the place, she may just as well make the best of the moment to get a feel for the people: those like herself, those people who have found themselves fishes out of water, left with no option but to grow legs or flop about on the shore until they die... doesn't much matter which. she's on the prowl, decked out in a smart pantsuit a trifle too hot for the climate with her jacket and coat draped over one arm to cover her tattoo and a delicate smile on her face, ensemble all coming together to gently suggest it's my first day, so long as a person knows what to look for. first test.
anyone will do, so long as they're sporting a tattoo (or are interesting enough besides), and Alice makes her approach without any fuss, pausing alongside her chosen target to enquire without any real introduction: ] Do you have the time?

[ new place, new rules, new communicator... there's more than one way to get to know the population, and one of those would be the often undervalued art of digital communication. so. time to cast a line. ]
Are there any powers that make you feel uncomfortable? Any hidden strength that could make you wary of a friend? From what I understand there's no real telling what someone might end up with on arrival here. It begs the question.
ahhh I love Alice! Also #2
So it's a fairly rumpled and confused Max who blinks in response to Alice's question. She's not the only one who's dressed a bit too warm for Florida- Max's suit is suitable for a New Jersey winter, an urgently-needed trip to the dry cleaner, and not much else.]
Uh, sorry. I just got here, and my watch is still on... Jersey time.
[It's the same time zone, Max.]

Don't worry. [ I know how you feel: check one. to round it out another clue, a promise of shared experience and the camaraderie it brings, ] I get the feeling we're all going to end up with horrible jet lag whatever our watches say.

[Max's shoulders heave as he gives a dry, weary chuckle. He looks around them for a second as though expecting someone else. Part of him insists that this woman looks smart, friendly, and generally like she has better sense than to be talking to him. He tries to ignore it.]
You're from England? Or... the U.K., I mean.
no subject
Yes. Though that's not where I was before... here. I was in Switzerland, actually. Travelling.
no subject
Switzerland, huh? Yeah, heard it's real nice over there.
[Not that Max would know. Most of his life has been spent in the glamorous confines of Jersey, or a dirty, violent version of New York that would make Lady Liberty glad she was always facing out to sea.]
Welcome to America, I guess. [He spreads his hands to indicate the beauty of small-town Florida all around them.] Unless you've been here before.

Czes looks like he could be an ordinary 10-year-old in Heropa, aside from the tattoo- button-down shirt, loafers, neatly combed hair. If anything, he's sort of a non-presence, boring and neat.]
Oh, um...! [He glances at his watch.] It's one o'clock, ma'am!

or nothing. it could very easily also be nothing, but it's worth finding out. ]
Thanks. [ and this would be Alice settling herself down next to him, not really interested in the time anymore, legs crossed, smile light. ] Did you come here alone?
no subject
It's not her fault. She's concerned for him. Annoying, but expected. Time to play the part. It's been some time for him, but it's the safest thing to do.]
Ennis will come! [Czeslaw all but shouts, then lowers his head.] She wouldn't just leave me alone out here...

there's no reason for her to pander to him. she's never seen the point in molly coddling children the way most people seem to do. so, instead, eyes still caught on passers-by: ]
Maybe. Maybe not. But for as long as it takes her to turn up - or not - you're on your own. So— [ so the question, and she casts her eyes back at him to ask it, not kindly or cautiously or with any of the usual trappings of the concerned, but with blunt curiosity - ] What'll you do?

I'm very concerned.

Oh -- hi. Sorry. [ He blinks and smiles uneasily. ] The time for what?
no subject
For a stroll. I'm new here and I'd rather not walk the streets alone. Well, not alone - I can see there's a crowd. But company would be nice.
[ a girlish quirk of her head and a tug of her grin, questioning. well? ]
no subject
Can't say I really blame you. You never know who's who in a group like this. For all you know, anyone could be dangerous.
[ Should he offer his arm, or? Well, either way, he nods in response to her head-tilt. ]

[The young man who replies stands out a little, given the chains on his hands and wrists. He's also wearing a strange combination of military breeches and a touristy t-shirt, flip-flops, and a golfer's cap, tilted to an angle in a way that's less jaunty and more frankly disinterested.
Eren has time, sure. Or was that question the other way? She wants to know what the time is, maybe? Hmm. He hasn't heard any bells, so he'll have to hazard a guess. He glances down to see where their shadows fall, and finds that he's got an approximate idea after all.]
It's... three hours past midday, I think.
