TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Wasabi nods. Just then, the bus Hiro was waiting for arrives. ]

So, where you headed?

[ Again with the way-too-pleased-to-be-true grins. Except this one is actually the truth. ]

Heading up to work. Wanna see my nerd lab?

Heck yes, I want to see your nerd lab.

[ Except. He's got no money for bus fare. You see those pockets? They are empty of change. ]

[ Hey, Hiro's got you covered. Stark is paying him the big bucks after all. ]

Good, 'cause it's amazing. I've got about five more of these little guys waiting for tune-ups.

Sweet. I can't wait.

[ Then on the bus they go! ]

[ At least it's a short enough ride. Hiro wouldn't even ride the bus at all if he hadn't been out to grab some extra supplies. He holds the Baymini in his lap, toying with it. ]

Y'know, I bet Stark would hire you too.

Yeah? Stark being who, your boss? Your ...financier?

A little of both. He's a genius engineer himself. Made these superhero suits that he can actually fly in.

[ That sparkle in his eye says that amazing upgrades are going to happen because of this. ]

[ Oh, he sees that sparkle. And better yet, he understands that sparkle. ]

How's he manage the lift? I mean, Baymax was light enough, but a person, and a whole mech suit on top of that...

And managing the building so you don't break all your bone inside, right? That's what I'm trying to figure out. I think he does something similar to the magnetic shell endo I did for Baymax - all the pieces kind of supporting each other instead of diverting all the stress into a single spinal column. And the thrusters - well, even if I can't figure out his methods, there sure are a lot of hover things around here.

[ Wasabi nods along. Everything Hiro theorizes makes sense. ]

Guy like you, I'm sure you can figure it out soon enough.

That's the plan. There's like - actual superheroes here. Superheroes that know what they're doing! So we've gotta keep up.

Alright, I'm in. Big Hero ...2. Or 2.5, if you count the little guy.

[ He pokes the mini Baymax. ]

[ Alas, he is not squishy. Just 3D printed carbon fiber. ]

More like a 2.1. He's too small for combat. Unless we're fighting fairies or something.

Is... that a likely threat, here?

[ You never know. ]

Somewhat unlikely? But considering people are getting struck by lightning and thinking they're in a horse mafia, I'm not gonna rule it out.

A horse... mafia. [ What? How does that even work? Those words don't go together. ]

[ Exactly. ]

Yeah. It's weird. Fortunately, yours truly and a couple other geniuses came up with a vaccine kind of thing to keep it from happening more.

[ Though for the sake of this thread Hiro's not exhibiting the side effects. Yet. ]

[ Another proud smirk. ]

'Course you did. Any idea what was causing it, besides being struck by lightning? --How does that even happen to multiple people, anyway? It's like a... one in ten-thousand chance.

This is like heat-seeking lightning. These weird little storms that just blow up out of nowhere, shock someone, and leave!

Weiiiird... [ He glances out the bus window, as though there's a storm lurking out there waiting to shock him and make him part of the "horse mafia." ]

[ Oh Wasabi. You poor thing, stuck with getting exposition from Hiro. ]

Hey, we'll be fine. It's only a short walk from the other stop to my lab, and from there can give you the vaccine right away.

Okay. [ Phew. ] And this vaccine keeps the lightning from targeting you? Or just prevents the side effects?

Teeeechnically only the latter, but it might stave it off completely too. At least no one who's had it so far has gotten struck.
