TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Except they're not really hurting anyone, and if he's honest with himself, he'd probably have wanted one of those at their age, if they'd been available.

Anyway, he turns to look at the guy who laughed. Who is. Grey. Definitely grey. ] ...Huh.

...On second thought, maybe not.

[Drividot smiles at him, and quite misses that he's being...stared at...in favor of a potential comrade to the strangeness of this new place. It ...still hasn't occurred to him that Duskwights such as himself--tall, grey, slender and pointy-eared--would be a terribly unusual sight. After all, he's used to the sight of hyur humans.] You're new here, too? [He asks hopefully.]

[turnsignals]

[ Blink. Bliiiink. Oh, he's being spoken to. ]

Yeah, I am. And I'm starting to get the feeling this place is more than just "Florida."

[All right, now he's catching on to being stared at, and self-consciously adjusts his clothes.] Florida? Never heard of it--but I guess you have?

[turnsignals]

[ And that's enough to get Wasabi to remember that it's rude to stare. ]

Uh... yeah. Sorry. But, uh, Florida's a state, opposite coast of where I'm from, but, yeah, I know it.

[Nods along. It's good to know he has some idea of the ways of this place--it means he can ask another, even more important question:]

Is it usually this hot? [Tugging awkwardly on the collar of his jacket as he speaks.]

In Florida? Yeah, usually. You're from somewhere colder, I take it?

[coerthan]

{Drividot lets out air in a defeated sigh, and just takes off the dumb red jacket as he speaks.] I was born and raised in Coerthas. ...Which is not as far north as you can go in Eorzea, but it's as far north as you can go and still find proper civilization.

[turnsignals]

So, like... Canada. [ Is about what it would equate to, Wasabi figures. ] Maybe you ought to find someplace with AC, cool yourself off a little.

[coerthan]

Is AC a kind of drink? [He points back over his shoulder.] Because I tried the cold drinks they were offering to new people for free, the chocolate flavor was the only one I recognized.

[turnsignals]

Huh? [ Wow, what kind of place is this guy from? ] No, uh, AC is air conditioning. It makes the room colder. Like a fan.

[coerthan]

[Here's a hint: They still have knights in armor where he's from. Lots of 'em]

...I bet whoever invented it is extremely rich. [He's wondering how it works--thaumaturgy? alchemy?-- but that's tangential to the issue at hand.] Where would I find it?

[turnsignals]

Probably. [ Now he's curious as to who invented AC... ]

Florida? Probably just about anywhere indoors. Like, say... [ He looks around. ] ...There. That diner over there.

[coerthan]

[Anywhere indoors?] Definitely rich, [he mutters, mostly to himself.]

Thank you, I--oh. [Look at the grey elf turning a lovely pinkish tinge.] I never asked your name--I'm sorry.

[ He may complain about the nickname, but it's weird to go by anything else, now. ]
