TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ When Kasumi went through the same process of arrival about a month ago, she definitely spent as much of it literally out of sight as she could manage. Now, she attends as a spectator, looking on from the comfort of the local malt shop (and coincidentally one of the only ones around that serve non-dairy vegan (imitation) malts) just to check out the new arrivals and see if there maybe would be a familiar face in the crowds. It gave her a chance to see things from the other side, and she couldn't help but feel genuinely bad for the new imPorts, despite being relatively new herself. It was bad enough suddenly finding yourself in an entirely different dimension, but then to be treated like a spectacle by the locals upon your arrival? Kinda messed up. She's glad she had the luxury of being able to stay hidden when this happened with her.

Her gaze follows someone--one of the newbies, looks like, from the way the locals fawn over him--and she watches closely enough that she's intrigued when she notices the distraction that ensues after a flick of his finger. And then when he passes by the window and walks through the door, and leans against the wall, she grabs her drink and makes her way over. ]

Funny, you don't look that old.

I feel it.

[ it's an easy enough excuse. ]

I hope you're not here to ask for an autograph, too.

Shoot. You found me out.

[ She says it with enough amusement in her tone for him to be able to tell she's being sarcastic. ]

That was a cool trick that you pulled back there, though.

[ Completely innocently ] What trick?

[ Oh, that's how he's gonna play. Okay. ]

Oh, sorry, I must have mistaken you for the other guy who did the thing with his fingers.

[ He gives her a long look, wincing slightly ]

I thought I was more subtle than that.

Oh, don't worry. You were very subtle.

I just have a very keen attention to detail.

I hope you'll forgive me if that doesn't make me feel better.

No worries, I'm used to it.

But, hey, welcome to--here. Earth, I guess.

I'm from Earth. This just isn't my Earth.

[ She hadn't been back to her Earth in ages, of course, but hey. ]

So is this whole thing- [ he motions to her outfit ] -a fashion trend on some alternate Earth, then?

[ You know what, she's just gonna rolllll with that. ]

Yup! Absolutely. Especially in Japan. You know how weird we are.

[ He holds up his hands ] Not my place to judge. I was just curious.

Well, that makes two of us, doesn't it?

[ She tilts her head curiously. ]

I want to say "all of the above."

For the most part--at least from what I've seen, the Porter doesn't seem to bring in people that are average.

I'd argue that I'm perfectly average, but we already know that ship has sailed.

I assume you want to know about the-- [ vague twirling of his fingers ]

I definitely want to know about the--[ and she vaguely twirls her fingers right back at him. ]

Though, really, I would take anything. I'm a good listener. Hell, if you wanted to rant about the new job they gave you, I would be all ears for that, too.

Considering I haven't started my new job yet, I don't have much to complain about.

And that- [ finger twirly motions again ] -was magic.

Very nice, sir. Can't say I've met any other finger-twirling folks here, actually, though I'm sure there are more than a few.

See, this whole thing goes against every rule I was raised under. Normal people aren't supposed to know.

... But no one here is really normal, are they? At least, no one who was brought here.

Yup. I've met a few people who seem normal, but they probably aren't. But I've even met a, um. Flame... person? She's made out of fire.
