TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

01) Between the unnatural pallor of her skin, and her sword and surcoat, Sabriel looks completely out of place in sunny, futuristic Florida. When she hears the explanation, her expression shifts from wariness, to disbelief, to outright exasperation, although her practical side is relieved by the promise of a place to stay and a way to support herself.

"And you're sure there's no way to send us back?"

02) [While a hauberk and surcoat were a reasonable outfit in the Old Kingdom, in Florida, they made you stand out. And that was how Sabriel found herself surrounded by a small crowd in the malt shop, sending small lights floating through the air and small objects zooming into her hands.

When someone pointed to the bandolier of bells, asking if they could hear her play them, she shook her head, her smile slipping off her face, her voice suddenly becoming stern.]

No. That wouldn't be a good idea.

Are you a wizard?

I- no, I'm a mage. Why do you ask?

Because wizards are the best. [Duh.] What's the difference between a mage and a wizard?

I don't know. It's just that people who use magic are generally called mages, where I'm from.

Damn. If you ever get a beard though you gotta let me know. You'd make a rad af wizard. [She frowns.] Rad as fuck wizard, sorry.

So, what else can you do besides telekinesis?

A... variety of things. Conjuring fire and lightning, as well as more defensive magic. Binding and sealing away, that sort of thing.

But why would I want a beard?

Because they're awesome and you look awesome if you have a beard and you can do magic.

It only counts if it's long and white, though. Neckbeards don't qualify.

She's right. I don't think those are the sorts of bells you'd like to listen to, from the looks of them.

(ooc: Hi! If you aren't familiar with Sandman, Death here is implied to be the physical embodiment of Death in every universe. Given Sabriel and her family's connection to death/the afterlife, I have a permissions post for Death in case that doesn't work for you. But either way, they'd definitely get along!)

You seem- familiar. [Like she's met the woman before- like she's known her all her life, even- but Sabriel's equally certain that she's never seen her before.]

I get that reaction a lot. But I'd imagine it's a little stronger for you.

Have you tried the chocolate flavor yet? It's amazing.

I feel- like you're a friend- someone I've known for a long time. But I can't remember you.

And er- no, I haven't.

Of course you can, Sabriel. Most people know who I am, they just hate admitting it.

Feferi's clothes look perfectly appropriate to Florida. Swimming costume, sarong, swim shoes, a whole bunch of shiny brightly coloured necklaces and bracelets. Feferi herself... maybe not so much.

Right now, she's frowning, looking pretty thoughtful. She has... well, not experience, but she knows a little about armies, and what she knows is that you don't question them. Not if you don't want to be an example. With that in mind,she stands as close to the human as she can get, and quietly mutters a warning.

"I'd be very careful! Even if there was a way, I don't think they'd tell you. And if you keep asking, they might decide you're angling for a fight!"

"But- I have things I need to do-" Or rather, one particular thing. Sabriel wasn't sure how much longer she had to save her father. And despite her gawking at the odd grey girl,

"And I'd be happy to help these people once I've done what I need to. But there's something- something I need to do first. And it really can't wait."

Feferi shrugs. "I don't think they care about what we might have to do at home. If they did, they wouldn't drag us here in the first place." She grins widely for a moment, obviously amused by something. "And it's probably more important to some people than others."

Still perfectly cheerfully, she caries on. "All I'm saying is that people with this much power probably won't listen to one person."
