TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ she's not in the store to get a new phone, but rather in a futile attempt to find a charger for the dying battery of her old one. who cares if it somehow hadn't been able to make a simple call to new york? she wasn't going to stop trying until it did and she didn't want her shot at getting through to be thwarted by a dead battery.

while amy's arguing with the shopkeeper, her ears pick up on a very familiar monotone voice that makes her trail off mid-sentence as she desperately scans the store for — aha! it was captain holt after all! a wide smile breaks out onto her face as she stares in his direction before the neglected employee snaps her back to attention (and to normal, rather than looking like a smiling lunatic). she waves him off for the time being, suddenly focused on a different, more important priority: going to greet the captain.

play it cool, santiago. sure it seems like it's just herself and the captain who've seemingly turned up in some kind of weird pseudo-florida, but that's all the more reason to remain calm and professional. she needs to keep her composure and act as one of new york's finest if it's going to be up to her to partner up with holt to find their way out of here.

she takes a deep breath, posturing herself to stand taller before she approaches him. ]

Captain! [ aaand she's already looking way too eager to have spotted him. lbr, there is literally no version of this scenario where she can play it cool. ]

Santiago.

[If Holt is surprised at all to see one of his subordinates here in alternate-Florida, he certainly isn't showing it. It helps that she is acting extremely Santiago-ish. No one else on the planet looks this happy when they see him, including Kevin and Cheddar.]

When did you get here?

[He deactivates the hologram and sets down the phone to give Amy his full attention.]

[ ooh boy, his full attention. consider her both honoured and a little anxious! this is good though. this is cool. they could bond over this. ]

Just now! I mean, not literally just now. It wasn't like I was wasting ti— [ wait no, better stop before she starts rambling and puts her foot in her mouth. could he tell that she was happy to see him? it's never easy to gauge from his expression alone. ]

I was scouting the area. Trying to get information. [ smooth recovery. ] What about you, sir?

I was buying a phone. I believe I have found one.

[He holds it up to show her.]

It has an integrated statistical analysis suite, yet no emojis. I feel this reflects good prioritizing on the part of the designers.

An excellent choice. Very practical. [ she's not even faking looking suitably impressed, but then again, holt could probably hold up a brick and she'd commend him on the practicality of it as well. there is one thing though— ]

Although, did you not get one handed to you as well upon arrival?

[And that is one of the highest compliments Holt can pay anything. Amy's question gets an eyebrow from him though.]

The government-issued communicator was indeed issued. However, I'm sure you're not suggesting I should be reliant on just a single piece of portable electronics for my work.

No, of course not! [ she winces, shaking her head fervently at the same time. ]

I just meant that maybe... it could be a source worth investigating first?

[Raymond considers that for a moment, thinking over Amy's words while subtly checking to make sure she didn't strain her neck just now.]

It could be. I'll admit I haven't fully explored the government comm's full functionality yet. Making posts on social media as though fooling about on Facebook seems...

[Holt purses his lips as though tasting something that may or may not be expired.]

...counterproductive. Have you used your communicator yet?

Not yet, sir, but — [ she digs the one she'd been given out of her pocket so they can take a look at the item in question. ]

Well, it appears to be exclusively used by those who have ended up here from elsewhere. [ why just them and not the natives? who knows, but santiago definitely finds it suspicious. ]

I was thinking that it could be the best way to question that group specifically to try and find out more about the situation.

[Holt peers at Santiago's comm as though examining some novel piece of evidence.]

[ it's as if the heavens have opened up and a choir of angels singing hallelujah has suddenly appeared. ]

I'll do my best, sir. [ did she just salute why yes she did. but does leading the investigation mean she won't get more quality one on one time with holt?? better amend that fast. ]

But in the meantime, did you want to grab some food? Do a little undercover work? [ and a quick interjection before he protests ] And no street meat this time, I promise!

[Part of Holt is impressed- nay, proud- at how enthusiastic Amy is and how crisply she salutes, even in these difficult circumstances. He thinks she will make an exceptional Captain one day, but is careful about saying so for fear her head will explode. Another part of him wishes she would remember they are in the middle of an electronics store, not in the Precinct.]

Some undercover work would be an excellent way to test my new electronics.

[He nods, then takes the smartphone and starts heading to the cashier.]

Also, there is a local brand of nutrition bar I would like to test out. It promises twice the energy and nutrients, without the distractions of flavour and texture. I wouldn't mind getting your opinion on it.

[ she might actually pass out, which wouldn't be very good in the middle of a busy store. or anywhere really. maybe he should continue to hold back on verbal praise and just write her a good recommendation letter instead.

amy follows after him, smile still plastered on her face. which promptly disappears in the next few seconds as her brain catches up with holt's plan. ]

Wow — [ her lack of enthusiasm could rival holt's ]

I'd... love to. [ hesitation? no there wasn't any hesitation in her voice at all...... there may have been a silent plea for them to be better than nutrition bricks though. maybe she can distract him with something before he finds these flavourless monstrosities. ]

[It's not that Holt is incapable of perceiving that Amy is in the grip of existential terror right now. It's just that one of the prerogatives of being a police Captain is that sometimes you get to make your subordinates suffer for reasons that aren't necessarily fair or humane. Also, Raymond takes his nutrition bricks very seriously and could use some input on this new brand.]
