TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

And remember to have fun!

    01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

    02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

    03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

    04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ it's stupid, that he keeps coming here every time they get word of a new wave of imPorts heading in. thomas doesn't know what he's hoping for. that the other gladers will just magically show up on their own? the one a month pattern broke after teresa, and while that was cute and, in a very odd sense, reassuring, he knows the porter's more random than that. or, rather, not as kind as that. 'random' isn't really what he'd call accurate. lachesis has a sense of humor, shucked as it is. part of him wants to see chuck, knows it's possible. the other part doesn't know if he could handle the possibility of losing him again. for all the determination an surety he puts into the statements about figuring out the porter, trying to control it, trying to get all of them here and keep them here, thomas knows how stacked the odds are against success in that.

lachesis reminded him easily enough of how tenuous this peace they have here is, when teresa disappeared for that month.

but either way, he still ends up following his feet to cape canaveral every time, swinging by after he finished up at Xavier's for the day, and hovers near the sidewalk where new imPorts are dumped, after arriving in the porter and going through that shuck lab. he's only half pay attention, the rest of the focus spared on the phone in his hand that he keeps checking up on, skimming conversations less about new imPorts and more digging for information he hadn't catalogued yet. it makes the whole affair less of an anxious thing. don't put too much expectation into it. don't look for any of them. then you won't be disappointed when they aren't there. or, at least, so's the theory. he misses alby's mad dash, being on another side of the crowd, so there's something heavy and sinking in his chest when the last few imPorts make it out, and thomas sighs, turning to leave. what'd you expect? however, the one nice thing about making these trips, is that malt shop and their free drinks policy. granted, they're supposed to only be free to new imPorts, but a little extracurricular telepathy practice never hurt anyone. maybe.

strawberry malt in hand, he turns from the counter, ready to find a booth to sit at and text for a while, when the first face he sees upon skimming the seating area is, actually, and extremely familiar one. not chuck, but one that drags up a crushing surge of guilt nonetheless. and has his malt slip from his hand, crashing to the floor as thomas doesn't so much as glance down at it. ]

...Alby? [ there's something hesitant, almost fearful in the way he says it. he watched him die. he watched him eaten. and they'd had to run over his corpse to get out. for nothing. for the stupid, messed up, only way out path that thomas himself had created. for some barely even optimistic notion that the grievers might be satsified with just one body. ]

[ it's the crash of the glass that gets alby's attention. he's mostly been keeping to himself since he walked into the malt shop, taking slow sips from the chocolate malt (which is, in fact, delicious) and trying to compartmentalize enough to function as a human being again. he was supposed to be dead; there shouldn't have been anything left of him to take back to WICKED, let alone to bring back to life. alby's not dumb enough to think that this is still his world, because he saw what the world was supposed to look like, so either WICKED wanted to have him here, alone, setting up for some other trial (where he couldn't even find shucking peace in shucking death) or. he's dead, and this is heaven. or hell.

the chocolate's good enough, he could maybe be convinced for the first.

but, when he glances up at the crash, ready to roll his eyes at someone for being an idiot, he's met with a completely different idiot, and a familiar one. alby makes a face and stares at him--his first thought is anger, a furious building thing (you did this to them you did this to us you hurt us why did you do that to us) but he just sits there for a moment, his metaphorical hackles raised. ]

Greenie. [ he grits out through his teeth, pushing himself to a standing position. ] What the shuck are you doing here?

[ if he's dead--alby had put the part of him that wasn't ready to die towards the faint hope that he could get the grievers to leave the boys alone. a win win. it was thomas's stupid plan that he'd hijacked, and if thomas was dead, if newt was dead because of him....

he better have a damn good explanation for this. ]

[ well this is all very familiar.

alby and anger, it must be a day that ends in y. when he moves to stand, near on growling at him, thomas is still entirely too shocked to experience the urge to back up. it's what comes out of his mouth that has thomas more squinting at him, confused, as the sorrow and guilt give way for a moment. ]

I've been here. [ he says slowly, watching the old glade leader, searching for what's going on in his head at the moment. not that thomas ever really got what was going on in alby's head. ] For four months already.

[ with newt, minho and teresa, he wants to add, but he's not sure how well that'll go over at the moment, so thomas keeps it to himself. how much does alby remember? what would be the faint, sliver of kindness to have pulled him in here before his hail mary into the griever pack? the porter seems to treat those from their world with equal parts kindness and cruelty. or maybe the kindness is only there to aid the cruelty, make the impact of it that much worse. so much like WICKED - a glimmer of hope, right before slamming them with despair.

it occurs to him that alby might still think this is another trial - thomas had, first getting in, as had newt and minho, before they got a chance to really look around and understand things. ]

...What do you think this place is?
