TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

Shovel Knight | The game with his name
The diminutive knight, standing just beyond four feet in height not including the helmet horns, lifted a sizely vanilla milkshake's straw to the opening in his helm as he strolled along the pavement. The clank-clunk of his armor, punctuated by the occasional slurp as an air bubble formed within the drink, made him something of a spectacle among the locals.
By the third instance that he was asked where his parents were, joined by being addressed as 'kiddo', he had the feeling that he was in for a never-ending circle of misunderstandings. Nothing that tried his patience, no, as he was accustomed to the mistake for being more on the short side, but he did wish they wouldn't pat his head as they did so!
"Brutus, no! NO! You leave that child alone!!" Shovel Knight turned his head, then started. A rottweiler was bounding toward him, leash dragging behind it, owner distraught, and the knight was no good at animal body language.
Coughing and hacking, for he'd inhaled some of his milkshake in a gasp, he turned and ran as quickly as he could!
04.
You bet your bottom dollar he was going to get right in there. Reaching back, he sped down the sidewalk, retrieving his shovel from its place strapped to his back. If he had any of his artifacts from home, then he could simply speed onto the scene, grab them and make his way to the other side of the street. If Shield Knight was here, they could...
No, he was alone. He had to think quickly!
...That was when the spade of his shovel, in his distraction, tapped the pavement.
"What the-!?" The ground moved beneath him, jutting suddenly, shooting the blue knight off like a pinball. Hurtling through the air, he was uncertain how he got himself in this predicament, but he was heading right for those kids! He curled his body and entered a flip, righting himself and landing.
The shovel was twirled in a hand, and he set to work, piercing asphalt and digging right through. By three hauls of asphalt, stone and soil, it was deep enough. It had to be deep enough. Looping arms with both kids, he jumped into the hole. No sooner had they disappeared into the trench did the hover car haul ass right over it, not even bothering to slow with the cops right behind him. They swerved to dodge the hole, and continued on their pursuit, the doppler-effected sirens filling their ears.
"Are you both all right?" The kids, though shaken, nodded. With a breath of relief, he helped them back up and out of the hole, the adrenaline making his hands shaky. That was too close...
But when he emerged last, he cleared his throat and straightened his helmet. He needed to calm down. After waving goodbye to the kids as they hurried along to the opposite sidewalk, he set to work filling this hole back up again, watching warily for any more oncoming traffic.

"Say, that was pretty impressive! I ain't never seen someone dig a hole that fast."
no subject
"Slash Mercilessly and Dig Tirelessly, madam; 'Tis the code of Shovelry." Well, if that voice was any indication, he was definitely no child. But those helmet horns seemed to desperately wish to add some overall height to his silhouette.
"I bid the authorities good luck," he added, looking down the road where all the commotion had long since passed.
"So desperate to escape them, he or she was so willing to add child endangerment and manslaughter to their list of wrongdoings!"
no subject
"So that was a criminal tryin' to escape? I'll never understand people," she grumbled. Well, she was a criminal herself sometimes, to be sure- her and the rest of the crew- but at least they did stuff for the right reasons. "But you were here, so the day was saved."
no subject
But something still stuck like a thorn in his mind, begging to be addressed.
"Forgive me for changing the topic, but I wonder if you might fill me in on something strange that has been happening to me lately. That earthen pillar there..." He extended an arm, gesturing to the random jutting dirt that a dog now saw fit to alleviate himself against.
"My skills with a shovel are exemplary, but I can never recall making the very earth move as if it were its own creature before."
no subject
However, her jaw dropped and she became temporarily speechless- which was a rarity for her- when she saw the little man manipulate earth like that.
"Wode ma," she whispered. "I- I ain't never seen anything like that! Was that the power you was given when you came here?"
no subject
But there was a note of horror deep in the pit of him. To move the earth itself was truly terrifying. He would need to learn as much as he could about it, and use this power for good. Imagine if he had a wicked spirit!
"Surely there's an expert I could perhaps turn to for advice in this endeavor? This is not my first incident involving this strange new power of mine, and wish to be able to control it as quickly as I can."
no subject
She then pondered his question, before pulling her phone out of her pocket.
"Tried askin' the network yet?" she asked. "I know there's lots of people here come from worlds where they have powers and all... they might be able to help."
no subject
But she went on like they'd just sat down to tea, and Shovel Knight shook his head. W-well. If she wasn't making a big deal out of it, then so too shouldn't he! He retrieved a smaller version of that strange artifact he received, and flipped it open.
His eyes turned to it, then her. To it again, then her once more.
"...Network, madam? I could speak to other imPorts using this?"
no subject
"Must look weird, don't it? I'm used to it by now, but the first few times... and it still don't feel natural to me at all."
She nodded eagerly.
"Handy little device, ain't it? Yeah, you can record your voice or a video, or just write out what you wanna say."
no subject
"What magnificent technology! I know of a knight who would greatly enjoy such a device! He was always keen on things such as this. How might I access these functions?"
no subject
"Let's see now..." Kaylee made sure to point out things as she spoke. "You press here first... then select voice or video or text... and you follow the prompts from there. You can also choose who to send it to if it comes to that, or just make a one-on-one phone call."

"All in a day's work! This was something I could do in my home world as well."
He hesitated, thinking of that accidental launching. imPorts, he was led to believe, arrive to some extent with new powers, or others added to ones they already had. "...Mostly. The earthen pillar is new."

"I assure you, I am no child. I am old enough to partake in the drink, and am considering doing so once the clock rings five."

"Then this strange marking on my wrist will not suffice?"
no subject

"Now, where could an imPort get his or her proper identification, friend?"
