TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Yeah. This guy does seem vaguely familiar. Not that Ed's met him before, but after Hiro. He knows the kid has an older brother, just doesn't know the name or the circumstances. Just that obviously something happens. Happened, in Hiro's case.]

One word for it. Damn kids need to watch it. Be more careful next time.

[He tells the kids, who just nod and laugh sheepishly before running off to play. Ed sighs, rubbing at the back of his head for a moment.]

You new? I mean, I saw a file back there, so I thought it might be yours.

[Not that he had time to actually gather it, too busy trying to help those kids, but he had vaguely noted the dropped papers. That and he doesn't recognize the guy so it seems a safe enough assumption.]

Yeah, got here this morn--oh!

[ Yes, Tadashi definitely wants those files back, he hasn't gotten to read them yet! He gestures for Ed to follow and jogs across once the street is clear, starts gathering the papers all up.]

Yeah, they're mine. Dropped them when - [He gestures to the street] -that happened.

I figured. It's no worries, just they are important and some like to keep the details private. Figured you'd want it back.

[He explains as they cross over away from the crowds to gather the file, hands in his pockets. And can't help noticing the name. The same last name as Hiro's.]

Are you--are you Hiro's brother?

Yeah, I dunno what's in here but I'd like to keep it to myself.

Yeah, he's my little brother --[He's about to open it and finally read the damn first page but he snaps his attention back to Ed with wide eyes.]

You know Hiro. He's here?

[Ed doesn't impose on reading the rest but the name stands out to him at least. There's a nod of confirmation - yes, Hiro is here and Ed knows the kid. No, he's not about the be the one to open the can of worms of knowing something happens, or rather, happened to Tadashi from Hiro's time.]

Don't blame you. Mine got leaked and that was a pain enough. But yeah. Hiro's around. He's in De Chima. Works with Stark and Winry and the other gearheads.

[Gathering himself back up and stands a little taller, brother protection back in full mode now that he knows Hiro is here somewhere.]

I'm sorry to be a bother, but could you show me? I don't know where that is. Or-- Just directions is fine too, I can figure it out.

No, it's fine. I can show you. Not sure if he'd be home yet but I do reckon he's probably at work. Which that I can take you to. Show you where it is at least. If I get him or Winry one of them can probably let us in or something.

[He agrees. He's mostly been mingling a bit but has yet to spot any familiar faces so figures he has the time to help out. Gesturing for Tadashi to follow he starts walking slowly, a faint clanking of metal as he had waved his arm a bit. The right one.]

I know this place is pretty....crazy initially. But you get used to it.

Thank you. [Can you practically smell the relief in his voice? He follows easily enough. He's mostly focused on finding his brother so he almost misses the comment. It's the clanking that gets his attention. Too big to be any kind of jewelry. Prosthetic maybe? Not his business.]

Oh, it's-- Crazy or not, it's interesting. Sounds like a lot of new folks get ported in routinely too.

Least I can do. Hiro's a friend. And I reckon he'd definitely want to know if you were here. Rather I take you than you getting lost trying to find it yourself. [If Ed notes the familiar confusion at the clanking he doesn't mention anything. Definitely Hiro's brother though, that kid was the same way when he found out about Ed's arm.]

Interesting is one word for it. Lot of stuff around here wasn't even dreamed of yet back home for me. But you're right. I think it's about every month or so we get new arrivals ported in.

The tech is new to me, but the aesthetic is... More than a little dated.

[He remembers only seeing photos of things from this era. Actually standing in the middle of it with a lot of tech he and his classmates would die to see is something he can't quite put into words just yet.]

Is there a reason? Or was the spiel they gave me when I woke up all we know?

Outdated for some. I'm from 1915, so....lot of this--most of it is new. I mean, we had cars. Just not....flying. Or quite this advanced in general.
