TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ He looks at his coat, picking at it. Another weird human thing he has to get used to: clothes. Changing them. That kind of thing. He looked the same as a navi; that had been all. ]

Plain...?

They are plain. Yes. [ He doesn't argue. ] Is this a bad thing?

[ Yeah, he...he literally doesn't know. Of course he knows how clothes would say something about other people, but technically he's never worn them in his life. He doesn't think about this kind of thing. ]

[This idiot... why doesn't he know something so simple and obvious?

Then again, many people are dressed like him, here. Like Mr. Smith. Maybe he's the one who's normal, and she's the one who's weird???]

Ah. [ Maybe he should look into getting some nicer clothes or something...not that he can really tell what's nicer or what would look good on him. ] I'll keep that in mind.

That must mean your clothes are very good then. By those standards. [ He does find her clothes interesting. But he's almost certain that humans suffer from heatstroke! He's kind of worried. ]

...Your bow. Are you a hunter?

Ah... well. I guess they're nicer than average, aren't they...

[What is she saying?!?>!?!]

And I'm not skilled enough with a bow to be considered anything like that...

I was just practicing.

They're very ornate. Clothing is a part of human culture. I would assume the patterns on your clothes play some role in identifying yourself to the world around you. [ He knows enough about human clothing diversity to state that confidently, at least. It doesn't have much to do with him - he's not human! - but they're facts he can be reasonably certain of. ] Depending on where you come from, they can say many things.

[ They're reminders of where you came from, a connection to a home you might have left behind. It's why his operator wears the clothes he does. It's why he sees such a diversity in the adult humans that he knows. ]

Practice is good. Then you'll become more skilled and be called a hunter. [ Simple logic. ]

[She's about to respond to his first comment when the second one takes her off guard.]

O-Oh. Um. You don't think that's... "unseemly"?

[hypnotherapy]

Why would it be unseemly? Weapons are weapons. [ Literally everyone he interacts with has weapons so it's not really a big deal. Even uncustomised navis have arm cannons. ]

Do you not want to practice for cultural reasons? [ More curiosity. It might just be a cultural thing. He doesn't know. ]

[pariya]

Erm... well, that is, it's not exactly... men want to marry elegant women, don't they? Or something...

[hypnotherapy]

Maybe. Maybe not. I wouldn't know. [ He doesn't know much about marriage or how relationships are supposed to go. His operator and his teammates' operators are all single and happy about it, as far as he knows. ]

It's important to get married where you come from. Yes? Or no.

Of course it is!!

[hypnotherapy]

I see. [ He considers Pariya's words thoughtfully. ]

Is skillful use of the bow not elegant? [ He's seen people do some pretty cool things with bows. He's kind of aware some of those were movies, but still. ] What skills are required to meet that criteria?

Ah.

Embroidery is not something you enjoy very much.

[ He's disoriented but he'd have to be a lot more inattentive than he is to not pick that up. He feels confident stating it as a fact. ]

No patience? [ Embroidery is something he has no experience with but he's gonna guess that it's probably something that takes a lot of time and effort and patiently stitching for hours. ]

Y-You have to sit still for so long and at the end of it all you have to show for it is a piece of cloth!!
