TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ Oh, no. This poor hapless idiot. Kitty fights hard to keep from laughing at him. It's really difficult; she has to reach up and rub hard at her nose like she's got allergies just to hide her grin. But she gets that under control. ]

Oh, if you knew it, then sorry for assuming.

[ That's not said sarcastically; her tone is affable and cheerful. She sounds for all intents and purposes like she actually believes him. ]

[ got it in one, kitty. poor? yes. hapless? also. and definitely an idiot. he doesn't even notice her stifled smile, just sort of regaining his bearings for a little.

he's pushing himself off from the ground at her question, raising an eyebrow when he looks over at her. ]

Ah, is new really that synonymous with uninformed? Maybe I know a whole bunch about hover cars and nothing about this place! What then, huh?

[ mike, you've been here five seconds and you're already lying. ]

Well, then, I'd be wondering why you're trying to get your head up under one. Which could get ugly, by the way, if the hover function fails.

[ She crosses her wrists demurely over her book, but wrinkles her nose in the universal sign for gruesome. ]

[ oh lord. does that usually happen? does the hover function usually fail? he can't ask this without saying he knows nothing!

he... doesn't know anything. oh dear. ]

Okay, okay. Quick question, for all the points -- do hover functions usually fail in cars of... this model?

[ mike, you're embarrassing yourself. ]

[ Kitty takes a little bit of pity. She shakes her head with a smile. ]

Not really, no. Not this model. I don't know about the models you're familiar with [ hahaha ] but it is very rare for this one. Although some car owners do disable hovering as an anti-theft measure.

[ mike ross thrives on pity. ]

Wait, so they want people to be crushed by their cars if they try to steal them?! That's sick!

[ MIKE YOU HAVE NO ROOM TO TALK ]

No - no. I mean - they have them sitting on a flatbed. So you can't just push them off.

I'll admit, that makes more sense than what I was picturing. Usually there's... sounds, in the cars I know.

[ that was a bad way to put it. he waves a hand dismissively. ]

I mean, like -- with thefts! The cars just go off, sirens and stuff. They don't just drop down to the ground like we're stuck in the middle of some bad science fiction novel.

[ She lifts her eyebrows, but there's an amused little smile that she can't wholly suppress. It's maybe a little more obvious now that this girl is laughing at him. ]

A bad science fiction novel? But this is just how things are here. Not that I have to tell you that, of course - since you're definitely not new.

[ this is a familiar feeling, the one that he is feeling right now. it is the feeling of being laughed at by a lady. oh, life. ]

Oh, right. I said that, huh? [ that lie from two seconds ago is biting him in the butt, this is totally and completely unexpected. ] I didn't say I wasn't new to here, just not hover cars. Hover cars are pretty dime a dozen where I'm from!
