TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

That is a very human greeting. Short and not exactly beautiful.

Legolas puts a hand on his heart, and bows.]

Well met. I am Legolas, of the Woodland Realm.

[pariya]

[Oh. That's very polite. She nods.]

I'm Pariya. [She thinks about how Legolas introduced himself, and tries to match it.] Of the... desert realm? [That's how he meant it, right?]

[His eyes brighten at the mention of the desert. He has never seen a true desert- only the charred remains of a dragon's desolation.]

I have never seen a desert! Are they truly so hot as the stories tell?

[pariya]

It's not true desert. It's the steppes, so... there's shrubbery, and some mountains and stuff. Basically it's boiling in summer, freezing in winter.

[cuor]

A difficult existence, no doubt. [But his tone betrays his interest. There will be more questions about the desert later.]

Have you been in this new land long, Lady Pariah?

[pariya]

Pariya. [She corrects him automatically and without thinking-- not taking offense, because she knows now that he's foreign. She says it without any emphasis on each syllable, each even as the other, the "i" sounding more like the "ee" in "reed".]

Um. I don't know what constitutes as "long," but... I only found myself here this morning, if that's what you're asking. It still doesn't seem real...

I also arrived here not a day hence. It is land... [He pauses to search for how best to describe this land.] wholly unlike my home. The stars are dimmer and there are so few trees that I can scarce believe that so many live so close together.

[Pariya nods, sympathising.]

Mm. Personally, I'm not so fussed about the lack of trees, but... it's so cramped. The buildings go on forever, no matter which way you turn you can't see the horizon. It's unsettling. I feel... closed in.

[After spending all her life on the steppes, it's no wonder. The word she's looking for is claustrophobic, really.]

The steppes are open, then?

[His home of Mirkwood, especially in recently years, had become a dark and twisted place, very close and dangerous. But at least the trees themselves were full of life. The buildings here are so dead, despite the people within them.]

I hear this world is wide. Perhaps there is somewhere within it we might feel more at home.

[pariya]

[A small nod.] They are, yes.

It would be nice to travel, I suppose. But... it was said we weren't allowed to leave this country.

... [It occurs to her that she has no idea where the boundaries of "this country" are, exactly.]

We should procure a map.

[Pariya nods again, like, yes. That decides it.]
