TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[What a lovely day! A bit on the cold side, it’s probably this wind. But still a perfect day to just take a stroll around, minding one’s business. Maybe to go walking to work, or grocery shopping, or simply visiting a friend!

And suddenly there’s a breeze. How curious, isn’t it? And suddenly something- a hat, a a scarf, a bag- something goes with that sudden current of wind. But ah, don’t worry because there’s this totally not suspicious kid with a really bright smile and really big and adorable eyes giving it back.]

Huh! How weird, wasn't it? Here, let me- [And he reaches to give whatever it is back. The closets he gets, the better.] There. See you soon!

[And off he goes. All in all, nothing more than a cute anecdote to tell.






Wait, is that your wallet the kid is carrying as he runs away?]

[ There is a man waving his briefcase around, screaming something about his wallet as Korra rounds the corner to see a familiar blur of green rushing by. Korra doubled back around between the buildings to reappear some few yards down to cut the little weasel snake off before he got any further. ]

KAI!

Avatar Korra! [He knows better than to try to airbend his way out of this one. He runs towards her as he keeps smiling, his eyes the very definition of innocence. He isn't hiding, totally not! So he's obviously not done anything wrong.]

[ Admittedly, the shock of Kai suddenly dropping in wore have fairly quickly when the issue of his being a little shit after a supposed three year stint of improved behavior become the more pressing one. ]

What is wrong with you? [ She debates grabbing him by the arm and dragging him back to the man he robbed. The possibility is still on the table as she fumes. ]

This is more than just a step back, Kai. How could you go back on Tenz-

[ beat. ]

Why...?

[ Korra holds out her hand flat, checks his height compared to her own. Does this one more time, and then another. ]

...Did you shrink?

[He scoffs.] Yeah, yeah, very funn-

[...And then he squints.] Did you get a haircut?

[ Loki knew the rounds. he knew when the Porter was feeling particularly takey because they ended up with full streets in Heropa. this was, of course, because everyone and their mother's sister's brother was trying to get a good glance at the incoming heroes. Loki came for different reasons—but the excitement was contagious.

he knew the song and dance, and he knew the more crowded the better.

when Kai passes he does manages a very impressive clueless look, as if he's not certain what's going on. when the boy turns to silently bask in his victory, he might find something strange in the wallet. there's just a small slip of paper that says "one free joke, you earned it." ]

[Kai just squints, shaking the wallet as if expecting something else to fall out. There’s nothing, just the little annoying note. What does it even mean? A free joke to who? Or are they implying the note is his free joke, and next time it won’t be free?

He goes back and squints as he glares around, trying to see if he can catch the owner again. Whoever they are, if they managed to trick him like this they must be good.]

Hey, come on, what does this mean? I was just joking around, I promise.

[ there's a guy in green not to far away, and from the milling crowd he manages to make eye contact.

and then wiggle his dark nailed fingers at him like the whole thing was a magic trick. ]

[Joke's on Loki because Kai has no idea what a magician is. But he still squints and, with the help of a bit of airbending he pushes himself up and tries to land in front of the weird man with the weird nails.]

Don't you want your wallet back?

[ wow Kai rude. ]

You gained it fairly most unfairly.

[ he says with amusement at the implication. there's observance in how easily Kai utilizes his powers despite the very obviously way that he snuck off with his faux wallet. he wonders, briefly, if it's a little thrill that he gains from the challenge. Loki wouldn't deny it—for him, it was a little B&E. ]

It's yours.

[He has yet begin to rude.]

Why would I want it? There's no money in it. Just a note. Do you walk around with that on your wallet in case someone steals it?

Maybe you just chose the wrong one. [ he says smoothly, looking a little smugly pleased with himself. it's like he had won a small victory against this child creature. ] You'll have to have swifter fingers next time.

Or maybe you're just poor and have no money. I can't really pay for a house if I keep stealing from people like you.

[He isn't even going to deny what he was doing, no point on it now. Plus the guy sounds good, so he might as well push a few buttons, see what happens.]

Alas, you'll have to hone your skills. [ Loki leans down a little bit, lingering just outside of his personal space. ] Your poor house, I suppose foreclosure's in the future if you don't start picking better targets.

[Kai squints. Weird place, weird powers and now this weird guy... today is not going to be a good day for Kai.]

Why do I get the feeling that by better targets you mean everyone but you?

[Unfortunately for Kai, Lina knows this trick far, far too well, and she's prepared for it. Her wallet? Has a cord on it, keeping it hooked to her belt, and right about the time the cord is going to run out, Lina flicks her wrist, summoning a very focused gust of wind aimed for the back of Kai's legs.]

Bom di wind!

[WOOSH. Kai down, but t on the floor. He couldn't feel that gust of wind until it was too late- maybe Bald Guy had a point about shaving their heads.

But! Now that he's already stolen the wallet he can't just go back. so he just creates an air current to lift dust and some leaves around before he takes off running once more. Hopefully that will be enough to distract her.]

[The hat isn't exactly Eren's anyway. It came from a shopkeeper who was understandably concerned by the half naked young man sweating and cursing at the way the sidewalk had been burning his feet. They're fine now, with the new strange shoes he's been given, and the shirt as well.

No wallet, though. Better luck next time, pal.]

[But that's not the worst of it. Eren knows a pickpocket, after his time spent as a refugee. He kicks off the stupid flappy shoes and runs after the guy, ready to attempt to tackle him if he doesn't stop. Just because he didn't have anything worth stealing doesn't mean he's not sore about it.]
