TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

The first hit had been a surprise, certainly, but it didn't have quite the impact and offense the backhand did. After all, Manabu had only been trying to help that time around.

It wasn't a terribly violent blow, but being so unexpected it does make him stagger, recoiling and drawing his arms up defensively. His head lifted enough that he could peer wide-eyed between them, gawking as apologies were uttered.

"I–I, but–" The action didn't make sense with the words, not at all. "Why did you do that?! I was only–"

"I'm sorry, I- I didn't mean to." Max puts his hand behind his head and looks around him as though trying to spot the person who really screwed up here. No such person appears to be present, though, so Max falls back on other excuses like he's good at. "I was just reaching for those papers, and- I dunno, maybe I'm still a little out of it from the teleport... thing."

He shrugs helplessly. "Are you all right?" Asking again seems like about the only thing he can do here. Certainly it's the only thing coming to mind.

"What?" What kind of explanation was that supposed to be? Manabu grimaces, holding steady until he's sure both of those hands are out of range before starting to uncurl.

Who reaches for papers and just smacks a guy, anyway?! This place is nuts. If he didn't want him to hand him things, he could've said so...Or, what? The teleport...thing...making him extra jumpy? Jeez.

Breathless still from being so startled, Manabu steadies onto his feet, stepping away from the pages back on the floor – even his own. "Jeez, I...Sure, yeah, but..." The look he shoots up at Max is pretty much But come ON, man!

"You do that often when you're jumpy?"

"Well... not all the time." Max has to admit that he does hit people- intentionally and accidentally- a bit more often than is strictly socially acceptable. Or legal. The Jersey nightlife has a tendency to get a little rough, and so does he.

"Look, I'm sorry, okay? Let me just..." Max bends down to grab the pages on the floor, praying he doesn't manage to headbutt this guy as he does so. In his chagrin, he scoops up excerpts from Manabu's file along with his own documentation.

No headbutts, thankfully, but Manabu isn't taking chances; he leans away, grimacing as he watches him pick up the pages he was trying to do earlier. This is...this is awkward and embarrassing, but he can't help but get the sense he ought to be angry about it.

He just can't muster it, though; he's too confused to be truly mad.

"Maybe just..." He winces a little even at the stupid suggestion. "Just let me take it? Even if I accidentally hit you, I don't think it'd do much." What with the guy looking half a shaved grizzly bear.
