TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[...Well that sure does look like a taller version of him. Nevertheless, he's reaching a hand out and trying to pull him out of the sea of children. He takes it pretty quickly, half-swimming over.]

Y-yeah, I noticed!

[As you pull him out that... sure is a robot, yep. He looks like a robot, though thankfully he doesn't act like one, thankfully. There's a small chorus of 'awwww' from the children as he's fished out. Blue robots are popular, huh.]

I though I was gonna be trapped in there for hours. Thanks for pulling me out.

Ah, yeah, that happened to me... [HE WAS TRAPPED FOR HOURS. LITERALLY.] Their enthusiasm just gets ahead of them. Come on, I think their parents look at us as convenient babysitters. [Nothing against them, it's probably exhaustng looking after sugar-saturated human kids all day.

But that's why X is beating a hasty retreat, a hand on the back of his smaller lookalike. And wow, even their faces are similar. Different colored eyes, but the structure...

It occurs to X that he's staring and he looks away hurriedly.] Sorry! It's just...we could be based on the same blueprints. The resemblance is kind of amazing.

Jeez. And Roll says I'm the one who needs to be babysat. [He laughs at his own joke, but then catches the tail end of what X is saying. It's true. They looked way too similar. He was a bit more kited out than Rock was, but that was nothing against him.]

Yeah, it's like we're twins or something. [Might as well get in all the jokes he can while Roll isn't here!] Uh, I'm Rock! I don't think I've ever seen you around Dr. Light's lab, but... [Who's to say that he wasn't working on this guy in his spare time?]

[X perks up; more family already! He'd been worried when he first arrived, but getting stranded here has arguably been the best thing that's ever happened to him. In his whole life he's never learned so much about the doctor and his own siblings as he has in this single day.]

Dr. Light was my creator! I wasn't activated for over a century after my construction, so I never got a chance to meet him, but- oh, but our brother told me about him! Break Man, is the name familiar?

[A century later? No wonder this guy looked so advanced!]

Woah... over a century? G-guess that makes you the baby of the family, huh? [He laughs a bit, but it's a little awkward, as X drops the name. He tries not to look too upset by it but... well...]

...Yeah, that's... uh. His real name's Blues. He the oldest out of us but he... uh. Ran away from home. [That's putting it mildly and skirting around the whole working-with-Wily issue. He figures X doesn't need to know about that, right???] He kind of does his own thing, Dr. Light worries about him a lot, though.

[The baby of the family. X can't remember the last time a little handful of words ever made him so happy.

Though that news about Break Man -Blues, apparently- does sober him up a little bit.] Ah. That explains why he seemed uncomfortable. I'm sorry if I touched on a poor topic of conversation; I'm just so curious. [Hopefully he didn't put Blues out too much; he doesn't want to leave a bad impression on anybody, least of all whatever connections he has to his past.]
