TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Nothing about this place is familiar or routine to Eren, who is occupying the booth in a vaguely puzzled way even before the strange woman sits down beside him. He'd been barefoot and shirtless only a few minutes ago, but a shop owner a few doors down had insisted on clothing Eren in a brightly colored shirt and what he's sure must be a type of foreign shoes.

There are still chains on his wrists and ankles, attached to nothing now, but he's far less bothered by them than by the bright lighting and that mysterious music that's piping through the room somehow. He tilts his head to one side, listening for a moment. Instead of informing the woman that he already has a best friend, he meets her eyes and asks earnestly,]

Can you hear that?

[It takes a few minutes for Chloe to register that he said anything besides "okay, sure." Once she does she looks up and gives him a flat look.]

Hear what?

[If the look registers with Eren, it doesn't show. He keeps listening, and alternately looking around for the source. Is it coming from the floor above them?]

The music.

[As often as people have called Eren crazy before, he's never actually worried about it. There's probably an explanation. When the server comes to the table, they're both given water without even having to ask. There's only one menu, however, since Eren was alone just a moment ago. At the server's puzzled look, Eren proves he's been at least partially listening.]

My friend's going to sit here, too.

[The guy's probably some kind of crazy, but at least he's playing along. Chloe gives the server a superior look as she gets a menu handed to her, an waits until they're alone at the table again before pointing upwards. Her eyebrow can't go any higher.]

It's a speaker. You know, sound system? Expensive? Makes music happen all over the place? I know the music here is crap but that's no excuse to go nutso.

What?

[Eren tries his best to seem politely uncomprehending, but the irritation of this whole situation is probably starting to show through a little. He barely understood a single word she just said! What's even worse is that when he opens the menu to look through it, he doesn't understand what any of that is, either.

He throws it down again with an annoyed huff and slumps in his seat, sulking like a child even though he's not been one for several years now.]

It's like the flying carriages, isn't it?
