TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

But as Nora continues talking Tara tenses, somewhere between flabbergasted and... a work for shocked that's less freaking British. )

How-- ( She stops, takes a breath. ) They're decaying. Guts hangin'out, bodies fallin'apart style decay. You can't come back from that. You just-- die. And they're already dead.

( Whoa, dude. This isn't... she can't process that. )

Yeah. That's what we thought, too. Turns out, there are two types. The ones who are closer to humanity and then the ones who give up -- rot until they're nothing but voracious monsters. I mean, even worse than the normal kind of zombie.

[ She nods, giving Tara false hope. No one has explained to Nora this whole separate universes thing. She's just relieved that there's someone who gets it, who knows they have to fight for their lives on a daily basis. Someone from a world where there has been a zombie apocalypse. ]

It's spreading, though. Hopefully soon it'll hit Georgia. Maybe you can get it started by hooking up with a hot zombie. That's what my friend Julie did.

[ She giggles a bit at the thought and how crazy she thought Julie had been at the time. ]

( She... looks... incredulous. To say the least. )

I think all we got is the voracious type.

( Seriously. Those things are beyond all levels of fucked up. She remembers grabbing at the walker that was going after Meaghan, desperately dragging at its leg and losing all purchase because the skin and muscle and sinew kept tearing away. She remembers how stupid she was to put down her gun, even for a second, how Meaghan almost died and she was useless.

Tara's gaze is somewhere between wide-eyed, traumatised puppy and flat incredulity at the next. )

You have a friend who's a necrophiliac? ( What. Hot zombie? Best friend? Hooking up with a zombie?

What. )

I guess, kind of? It's weird when you say it like that!

[ She shakes her head with a wrinkle of her nose. ]

But he's alive now, so does it still count? Like living, breathing, talking alive. I wish I could show you a picture, but...you know. Electronics are kinda limited.

[ At that point, some overexcited kid ran up to the two of them, hoping to get a picture. Nora smiled down at him and then looked up at Tara. ]

Hope you've been perfecting your badass pose.

It's weird whatever way you say it, dude.

( Seriously, bro. There is no situation where "zombie boyfriend" would not have had Tara freaking out. "Zombie girlfriend" wouldn't have gone over too well either, in fairness. Just dating and the dead, that is some alliteration Tara is not down with. There's some dark shit going on in Montreal, though, that much is certain. )

Are you sure this is the same apocalypse we're talking about?

( Because...there are other reasons Tara can't quite fathom this. Reasons like her father and Meaghan, and maybe Lilly if she weren't torn up beyond recognition. Tara didn't get close enough to check. The kids force her to snap out of where she's at, the confusion and the furrowed brow, eyebrows raising a little. )

( Because she is hefting her rifle and pointing it to the air, 007 style. )
