SO GUYS what we have here is a very big game, and one of the perks??? Huge fandom representation.

STEP ONE: WHAT'S YOUR CANON? GIVE US A NAME
STEP TWO: TELL US WHY WE SHOULD LIKE IT
STEP THREE: LINK TO GIFS, PICTURES, EXCERPTS, CLIPS, ETC. ETC. But be courteous to people with slow connections make sure to put things under top levels if it gets long!
STEP FOUR: PROFIT??? You might get a canonmate out of it! The world is your oyster, friends.

EDIT: HEY GUYS so there's a metric ton of gifs being posted here -- sorry about that, folks with slow connections and sensitivities to flashing gifs! I'll fix that up if I ever do this meme again, but in the meantime, if you'd like to see which canons have been pimped, I've put up a comment with individual links to every top thread. I hope that helps!

holy shit that blingee has broken my friends page

anyway, THE CONFESSIONS OF DORIAN GRAY. what is it (an audio series) how long is it (eps are usually 30-45 minutes long, occasionally you get hour long specials) how can you get it (Big Finish.com, the first ep is just $3 for a thirty minute download, that's cheaper than a smoothie and probably lasts longer) and now for the important question what do you get:

the world's best vampire boyfriend, imaginary friends pushing people down stairs, body-swapping, Christmas crossover fanfiction, Victoria "hbic" Lowell, Dorian telling you his feelings on alligators, evil plague doctors, evil tarot cards, evil cocaine, evil paintings, Oscar Wilde vs. Oscar Wilde's wallpaper, that time where majohng saved the world, ghosts, more ghosts, James Moriarity as a ghost, bad decisions, Mina Harker drugging Dorian, killing people via fire escape, that one Bernice Summerfield crossover ep of dubious canon, Dorian hasn't seen Back to the Future, golems, Simon Darlow: banker extraordinaire who really needs better friends, the rock band episode, and various Doctor Who actors playing various terrible people with Romana being the worst of them all (except for Colin Baker. He plays someone nice.)

here is where you can listen to trailers for each of the episodes, as well as a ten minute preview of each s1 episode. listen to "The Heart that Lives Alone" because you will then want to buy it and Toby is the goddamn best. here is a link to 'Frostbite' a short, complete story that Big Finish released for free at Christmas.

subscribers get more.

Shrek. You'll like it because it teaches valuable life lessons, like

what to do if there's an arrow in your butt, how to handle your new life as a royal, and how communication is the most important part of any relationship, even if you're completely different species who can't speak at all. If you've never seen it, no worry about cliffhangers. The series has been ogre for a while now.

WHAT'S THE CANON: HUNTERXHUNTER HI
WHY SHOULD WE LIKE IT: BECAUSE IT IS AWESOME. OKay but seriously, it's great - it's great from the very beginning, just very fun and exciting and silly at times and fascinating at times. And then things get really rolling and it just gets cooler and cooler. Every arc is like discovering a new canon within the canon, because the feel can switch a lot, but at the same time it still feels cohesive. And it can really slide between upbeat to the point of absurdity and really... heartbreaking and grim.

One thing I really love about HxH though is that I feel like it doesn't have a distinct moral perspective. ...this is probably not the biggest selling point if you aren't ME, but like... i love how some characters have very black and white perspectives and the series never says they're wrong, but at the same time you also have a lot of greytones and the series doesn't say they're wrong either. At times, especially with Kurapika and the Phantom Troupe, the lines really get blurred, and that's great for ME.

Also: Gon and Killua are insanely adorable?

Also you can just watch it on crunchyroll, like HEY NO REASON NOT TO GO WATCH THIS SERIES.

Plus we have Hisoka. You know you want Hisoka in your anime viewing life.

LINKS AND GIFS AND STUFF, WOW.

Uh, I suck and only ever save gifs of the Phantom Troupe, because I play Chrollo. So, uh, gifs to follow, though.

PROFIT: My friends, if you watch or read HxH, you are the one who profits.

MY CANON: The Bartimaeus Sequence
WHY YOU SHOULD LIKE IT: Oh my fucking god you guys?? it's fucking amazing???? Like okay you read the first book and it's this kid Nathaniel who's a little bit harder-edged than most YA protagonists, and who's not unlikable but who also isn't acting from motives like nobility or decency so much as his own injured pride, and you're like, "Man, this kid's sort of a dick, but I still like him and feel sorry for him because he's a 12-year-old who's seen some shit." And his relative unlikability is cut by Bartimaeus, who's the other narrator, who's an asshole himself but who calls Nathaniel on all his crap, so that's pretty fun. They balance each other out pretty well. And the plot's fun! Saving the government, being a hero. Okay, pretty standard YA stuff, that's pretty great. Then you hit the second book and some of the things that struck you as vaguely problematic in the first book start getting underlined pretty hard, and you're like, "Huh, that's...really problematic. Is the author aware of that?" And you feel somewhat uneasy, but the plot's really fun and there are plenty of quips and Bartimaeus is really hilarious, but boy Nathaniel himself is also becoming really shitty, isn't he? He sure was a decent character in the first one, but he's really turning into a dick - Oh, look, more neat world-building! Cool. And then the third book hits and as it progresses you realize that this whole fucking time this whole fucking series has been building up into a stealth critique of privilege and the way that it blinds us and makes us complicit in harming the world when we think we're helping, the way that we're always able to justify what we do as long as we stay ignorant, the way that violence just begets violence and only gestures of kindness and forgiveness can actually bring about any improvement in the world around you. And everything that struck you as problematic earlier? The author dismantles, dissects, examines, and puts together. Every moment where you're like "Jesus, Nathaniel"? That's answered. It's the rare book where patience and understanding are rewarded much more than courage or strength, not just by the other characters but by the narrative as a whole. The author completely put his money where his mouth was in crafting a story that harmonized perfectly with his worldview. And he did this while crafting a ripping good yarn. Also, holy shit the worldbuilding? The worldbuilding is fucking amazing. The author builds a really convincing vision of a) how magic might feed a totalitarian dictatorship and b) how simple greed and malice can feed a totalitarian dictatorship, and all the magic is just used so fucking creatively and intelligently. Like, people need to make a game based on this astonishing world stat.

Oh and also, fucking also, I think this is the ONE FUCKING PIECE OF MEDIA where the main character has a crush on a girl, redeems himself, and THE GIRL DOES NOT START LOVING HIM BACK
Like sound the fucking sirens you guys this series does not treat a girl's private parts as a reward for decency
PICTURES AND SHIT One of the characters is a spirit who takes the form of a cyclops who likes to wear dresses
And this goddamn nerd is your main character
And I love Kitty Jones so much that I want to scream

AND NOW FOR THE OTHER CANON, Happiness Charge Precure aka 'no wait, come back, I promise the name is the most stupid thing.'

it's part of the Precure franchise! which consists of magical girls punching things and destroying shit with the power of friendship! it's a Japanese anime, a season long, about 49 episodes if I remember correctly and two movies of dubious canonicity. each episode is about 24 minutes long. and again, what you get includes:

love triangles with God, attacking with a tambourine, Hawaiian magical girls, skirts and frills, friendship rocks, songs about rice that will get stuck in your head for the rest of the night, summoning GIANT CLOVERS FROM OUTER SPACE, Hime constantly being enthusiastic about food, singing, more singing, there's a lot of singing, French magical girls, nobody dying, crossover movies of dubious canonicity, changing clothes gives you superpowers, an episode where they defeat the monster by playing baseball, possibly the best example of 'civilian friend who knows the secret identity', American magical girls, someone holding a wedding at a Japanese lunch store, the loner outsider character getting a crush and holy hell you're adorable when did that happen, ridiculously cute ending songs, the best minibosses ever, outfits that are a cosplayer's nightmare, and Hime falling in love with a doll.

here is where you can watch the anime. Doremi Fansubs also subbed the series + the movies and has them available to torrent. since Hachapre is the tenth anniversary series, each episode starts off with a former Precure (and Shiny Luminous and Milky Rose) doing a little "wow, it's been ten years, keep watching please!" sort of introduction. You will inevitably think "oh man, this one's cute" and you'll end up watching yet another series because of that.

great episodes to start (aside from episode 1) include episode 4 (Hime starts school!), episode 20 (we learn about Hime's past and MAN IS IT TRAGIC), or episode 28 (they go to Hawaii!). so yes. watch it.

BREAKING BAD

Created by X-Files writer Vince Gilligan and set in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Breaking Bad revolves around Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a struggling high school chemistry teacher with a teenage son who has cerebral palsy (RJ Mitte) and a pregnant wife, Skyler (Anna Gunn). When Walt is diagnosed with terminal lung cancer, he breaks down and turns to a life of crime, producing and selling crystal methamphetamine with his former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), in an attempt to secure his family's financial future while avoiding detection from his DEA agent brother-in-law, Hank Schrader (Dean Norris). Betsy Brandt, Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Giancarlo Esposito, Krysten Ritter, Laura Fraser, and Jesse Plemons also play major roles.

Simultaneously a Tarantino-esque black comedy and a Shakespearean tragedy, the show is a smart, stylish, and visually stunning crime thriller that's been called the best television series of all time. Look at all these fucking awards. I don't think I can stress enough how fantastic this series is. There's a reason everyone was talking about it in 2013. It's beautiful, gut-wrenching, and hilarious, and it only gets better as the story goes on. If you enjoyed Reservoir Dogs, Sons of Anarchy, House of Cards, Urasawa's Monster, classic Westerns, or Macbeth, you'll probably enjoy this show.

Breaking Bad's 62-episode run ended on September 29, 2013. All five seasons are available on Netflix, iTunes, and Amazon Prime. The spinoff prequel series Better Call Saul airs on AMC at 10 pm Monday.

Now enjoy a relatively spoiler-free trailer.

COME JOIN ME ON THE RAILWAY OF TEARS AND FRIENDSHIP.....IN SPACE

[personal profile] siriusly 2015-04-06 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
THE GALAXY RAILWAYS...is one of the Leiji Matsumoto titles nobody's ever heard of but includes lots of tropes/character doppelgangers that look familiar.

Harlock hair, Maetel hair...oh huh, character designs that are actually diverse. Go fig

It's for you if you enjoy the following:
-Tragic backstories/childhoods
-Coming-of-age tales
-Silly space logic (steam locomotives powering through space is the big one but there are so many)
-Cute episodic buddycop police teambuilding and survival adventures
-That thing some shows do where they lull you into a false sense of security and predictable plots and then COMPLETELY RIP YOUR HEART OUT AND SLAP IT ONTO THE FLOOR AND STEP ON IT OUT OF NOWHERE
-Forreal though I watched this and did not expect to feel so strongly about it AND THEN THE THING HAPPENED
-Shows where cute boys get shot/punched/the snot beat out of them fairly regularly and the sometimes they cry

It is currently available:
-FUNimation's Youtube channel has some episodes up (I didn't check to see if it's all of them, don't ask me for so much God)
-Streamable on any of those goddang anime streaming sites
-First season is for sale on Amazon for 20 bux or cheaper

THE PLOT
Out in space, people go planet to planet via locomotives along the Galaxy Railways. The SDF (Space Defense Force) exists to help protect said railway. One of the SDF platoons, Sirius Platoon, works on the military space train Big One. It's the train Manabu's dad once captained, and it's the train Manabu has been stationed to when he joins the SDF.

The show starts with his youth, his inspiration to joining, his initial friction and adjustment to seasoned military comrades, and all the weird shit that can happen on a job that takes you through space to planets and places that can get really really weird. TROPE COMRADES EVERYWHERE! Stern but mother hennish captain, hot-headed and self-conscious girl, can-never-be-pleased hurts-you-because-he-loves-you sempai, carefree gambling problem guy who bets on odds of survival, sexy nurse android........that's a trope right.......

Anyway, the show is pretty episodic with most of them being self-contained stories of the Platoon solving x-mystery or fighting y-terrorist with some kind of sad theme of humanity behind it because this is Leijiverse. Near the tail end though shit gets all overarching plot and SAD and VIOLENT and WHAT HAPPENED and doesn't slow down until the end.

There is a second season which I have only watched an episode of because it's hard to find with subs and also I'm not sure I'm emotionally prepared to embark on life after season one.

WHY I LIKE IT AND RECOMMEND IT
I really grew attached to the friendships/character dynamics. Every character on the Platoon is fleshed out and gets their own arc episodes – if not two or three. And even many of the tertiary/support characters get more focus than you'd expect a show like this to give, so it really fleshes out the relationships and stuff they're fighting for.
The animation is ok – it's actually really really good for Leijiverse standards, but I know it wouldn't be much to write home to compared to some other titles. A fun thing to do, though, is to recognize when the animation quality increases because those tend to be the tearjerker/violent episodes. I love that shit. Character designs are cute, the train designs are amazing because Leiji is all about trains and shit.

Leijiverse titles are kind of niche in that love-em-or-hate-em way because they tend to follow the same formulas in design and story structure, so it's absolutely not everyone's cup of tea. There's storytelling cliches and melodrama you either find really endearing and enjoyable or just roll your eyes and pass, and I get that. But in this case, I find it really charming and sweet. Manabu's a really strong main character who could've easily just been a boring blank slate, but he actually learns and grows and becomes quite a character on his own.

There's also a train full of ghosts. Ghost train.

GOD OK but if anyone is interested in watching bits of it sometime I am the kind of person totally into livestreaming an ep or two just for sampling. SPACE TRAINS FOR EVERYONE...

Tyfyt and consideration

WHAT'S MY CANON? Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex

WHY YOU SHOULD LIKE IT: It's one of the best animes there is. It's basically CSI if CSI wasn't horribly insulting to the intelligence of anyone remotely familiar with how technology works. The show follows Section 9, an elite counter-terrorism squad in a cyberpunk future version of Japan. The show deals with themes of what it means to be human in an age where mankind is becoming more and more integrated with technology, how constant connection to the internet has changed the nature of society and crime, and government conspiracies and corruption. It's complicated and philosophical but has great characters and the first season plot arc is one of the best there is.

WHERE CAN I WATCH IT? The entire first season is free and legal to watch on youtube! Note that you'll have to get to episode 4 before the main plot arc kicks in, but it's worth it, trust me.

WHY YOU SHOULD LIKE IT
if you like analysis of humanity and inflicting gross emotional suffering on yourself, then this is the show for you! I... wish I were joking.

ZOMBIES SURVIVAL EMOTIONS
you will hate yourself for watching this show, probably. I have to admit that I have not read the comics, but this show is an emotional roller coaster that will make you want to throw shit and destroy things at least twice a season.

THAT SAID I LOVE IT AND I WOULD LOVE MORE PEOPLE TO WATCH IT SO I CAN YELL ABOUT FEELINGS.

The video I am about to link to I think showcases the show pretty well, BUT: violence, gore, death, decapitation and severed limbs, just... so much horrible shit. Also, spoilers. HERE YOU GO. There's also adorable stuff in there, even if there is a sad lack of Rosita, Abraham and Eugene.

Not going to lie, this show will drive you nuts and you might need to quit for a while. My personal favourite seasons are four and five, but that's because I love Tara to death, soooo.

OLD KINGDOM CHRONICLES

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2015-04-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
So Sabriel is the first in a series of books called the Old Kingdom Chronicles by Garth Nix. The other books are Lirael and Abhorsen which feature a girl called Lirael and Clariel which is set hundreds of years before Sabriel.

So the stories are set in two worlds- the completely mundane Ancelstierre, which is basically 1920s England, and the Old Kingdom, a more medieval society where technology doesn't work, but magic does. Speaking of- there are two separate magic systems- Charter magic, with is rooted in the Charter and order, and Free magic, which is rooted in chaos. If you like YA stories that feature horror, the undead, and kickass female protagonists, awesome magic systems and a sarcastic talking cat who shows up in all the books and is completely awesome, this is the series for you.

Tiger and Bunny

[personal profile] earnedmystripes 2015-04-06 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
MY CANON: Tiger and Bunny is a 25-episode anime (plus two movies and a shit ton of supplementary material) that's basically like Japan's love-letter to the comic book industry. Set in a reimagined Manhattan, the fictional tri-tiered city of Sternbild, the show centers around the eight superheroes who fight crime while trying to become the very best, like no one ever was King of Heroes.

The main premise of the show revolves around Hero TV and those affiliated with it. Originally created to better the position of NEXTs, powered individuals who began appearing 45 years ago and were highly stigmatized by society, the hero industry has become highly corporatized, with many involved the business having more interest in ratings and profits and popularity than genuinely saving people. In turn, much of the general population has come to see the Heroes as commodities for entertainment, rather than people who risk their lives every day.

Then we meet this loser: who's an old-fashioned veteran in the Hero biz for a decade, and he's this guy who's a huge dork and generally secondhand embarrassment personified, but right away he's distinguished as someone who doesn't care about the frills and the show business of it all: he just wants to save people.

He gets to have a meet cute with this smug asshole: , who's basically Batman. For srs.

So of course that means that they will meet again, and indeed they do: the company that hired him decides it'd be a nifty marketing gimmick to pair up a veteran hero and a rookie, so SUPRRISE GAIZ, YOU'RE STUCK WORKING TOGETHER.

they get along so well, as you can see.

(that's the first step on the road to the next 23 episodes of increasingly gay subtext that slowly loses the sub tbh)

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH IT: it's really beautiful and sweet and funny and hopeful, with a lot of heart. It's really about what it means to be a Hero, and has both themes of growing up along with the message that you're never too old to follow your dreams.

As Nishida says: "I wanted to describe their everyday lives and family problems, because I think that by showing the parts of them that aren’t really heroic you can make them even more appealing."

There's an amazingly varied cast, too, with characters that are Japanese, Chinese, Latino, and black, as well as canonical genderqueer and gay characters.

The Silmarillion/The Hobbit/LoTR

[personal profile] belegurth 2015-04-06 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
The Silmarillion is epic. Elves definitely do not make bad life decisions over shiny jewelry. Or kill each other. Or go generally crazy because some semi-god was miffed his dad didn't appreciate his music and then went on to piss off some dramatic elven princeling with father issues.

Definitely not, you can trust me.

The Hobbit is just as awesome. Dwarves definitely do not make bad life decisions over shiny things, some get killed, and have to deal with a grumpy dragon. And there are definitely not more elves who are making some more bad life decisions.

Would I lie to you?

Lord of the Rings is pretty amazing too. There is definitely not more trouble over a shiny ring, more questionable life decisions made by elves, and more emotions to be had. But there are hobbits at least and hobbits are awesome.

Middle Earth: We can't be trusted with shiny things.

WHAT'S MY CANON: Megaman Battle Network AKA Rockman.EXE AKA Every problem is solvable by the power of the internet. It's an anime! It's a game series! There's even like, two mangas, and the one everyone knows just goes majorly off the rails anyway! The anime and the game series don't match up perfectly! YEAH.

WHY YOU SHOULD LIKE IT: HAHA UMMM WELL if you like a really positive and optimistic portrayal of human/AI relationships + society then this is a very good series for you

Basically it's the canon AU of Classic where Dr Light decided to make AIs instead of robots and a whole new networked internet society sprang up around this technology and wily is a bitter cranky old man who got passed over b/c people thought net society was more profitable than robotics

so he like forms weird terrorist groups to disrupt society and mess with people AND THIS HAPPENS FOR LIKE SIX GAMES except that's not something that happens in the anime really.

ALSO ALIENS TRY TO WIPE EARTH FROM EXISTENCE AND SOME PRICK TRIES TO SHROUD THE WORLD IN DARKNESS AND GIANT VIRUSES TRY TO EAT THE INTERNET

ALSO: THERE ARE LIKE TEN BILLION CHARACTERS AND YOU'LL FIND SOMEONE TO LOVE, AT LEAST IN THE ANIME WHERE THEY ACTUALLY GET DEVELOPMENT also the games are really fun and they're like a hybrid RPG with real-time battle system that relies on timing and skill so like, yo, check it out.

Also in the anime World Three is a bunch of fucking nerds and I love them they're a ridiculous villain family. LOVE YOURSELF. DON'T WATCH THE DUB, IT BUTCHERS EVERYONE'S CHARACTERISATION, WATCH THE JAPANESE.

okay so hannibal nbc

WHY SHOULD YOU LIKE IT?
Do you like cannibalism? Wait, no. Anyway. The show is currently at 2 seasons of 13 episodes each, with the third coming in June. If you're into:
- fancy suits
- classical music
- specific members of the cast
- ke$ha
- lighting so dark you wonder if your TV's contrast/brightness setting is FUBAR
- strange murders that you're pretty sure are impossible to actually achieve in reality
- culinary dishes that defy any reasonable explanation
- symbolism so in your face it almost reaches out of the screen and slaps you
- flower crowns
- foreshadowing delivered via puns and wordplay
- shows filmed in Canada pretending to be American cities they look nothing like
- dogs
- gag reels
- mythological references all over the place, especially Leda and the Swan
- knowing who the villain is from the start and yelling at the rest of the world to figure it out or
- rooting for the villain

maybe this is the show you will have feelings about. you will not, however, love this show more than korea does.

What's my canon? Fullmetal Alchemist. Or, that's the original manga name and the initial 2003 anime series. And then there's Brotherhood. Which is more recent anime that they did to follow the manga more closely and bring in the badass that is Olivier Mira Armstrong and the Xing crew. Yup. Because the 2003 series was while the manga was still ongoing so they had to kind of do their own thing in the second half to finish it off, it ended rather differently and more bittersweet than the typical happy ending of the manga/Brotherhood. Which the characters totally deserved after everything omfg.

Why you will love it? It is honestly a series about friendship. About the struggle of humans and how our friends and family will always be there. How they pick us up and encourage us to keep moving forward, as Ed likes to put it. In every single damned volume of the manga, this series made me alternatively both laugh and/or cry at some point. A lot of points.

The main plot follows this brat, Edward and his younger brother in their journey to regain their bodies after they try taboo in attempting to bring back their mother to see her smile again. The most heartwarming and totally not terrifying set up there. But that's essentially it in a nutshell. Ed joins the military for their access to classified information that may help them do so, through the use of something called the Philosopher's Stone that is able to amplify one's alchemic power and bypass the Law of Equivalent Exchange - that to obtain, something of equal value must be lost.

Things do differ between 2003 and the manga/brotherhood but essentially, the boys get waaaay over their heads and involved in the corruption of the military and the homunculi, and their link to Hohenheim, Ed and Al's father.

The series has some pretty frakking badass women as well. There's a reason Ed is terrified of some and respects those ladies! Between Winry, Riza and Olivier (all of whom we already have here to admire in MoM) and the boys teacher, Izumi Curtis. There's a magnificent female presence that also in manga/Brotherhood includes the likes of Lan Fan, a badass bodyguard for the Prince of Xing, Ling Yao, and the Princess candidate, May Chang, a pintsized alkahestry fighter that is determined to help save her clan and raise their status.

With this series you get: the technique of shirtless hugs and sparkles passed down the Armstrong family for generations!!!, these precious faces. How can you ignore or say no to these boys, the definition of 'I love her but why are you saying or asking me that?! also pandas. And the surprisingly expressive armor of Alphonse..

The manga is all out officially at 27 volumes. And Brotherhood is at 64 episodes, 2003 has 51 or so. It's not the longest anime, but I know it's not the shortest and simplest in that regard either. I know while it was being released I read the chapters online so I'm sure there are still scans around even if it is all out officially now. I think Netflix has or had the anime? Though don't quote me on that. I don't have Netflix myself here to be sure.

Come on guys. I know it kind of breaks you at points. But it is an amazing series and there is a reason it is so popular.

AND ALSO A SERIES THAT YOU WILL LOVE FOR YEARS TO COME ONCE YOU READ FMA YOU CAN NEVER FORGET IT, NOR WILL YOU EVER WANT TO. YOU WILL BE TRAPPED IN THE ENDLESS ROAD OF FEELINGS FOR THIS SERIES FOREVER

I ALWAYS SAY PEOPLE HAVE TO AT LEAST WATCH TO EPISODE 19 IF YOU'RE GOING TO WATCH BROTHERHOOD BECAUSE ONCE YOU GET THERE YOU WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP JOIN US

thephix: max - gratuitous black and white icon (my cold desire)

this weird original verse!!!

[personal profile] thephix 2015-04-06 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
so this technically isn't a canon but I'M GONNA PIMP IT ANYWAY

do you want to play in a universe with superheroes and powers but everything is kind of fucked up???

i'm pretty sure you do, in which case you should definitely consider creating your own OC to fit into Max's world. powers + superheroes exist, but the superheroes are driven by greed and power mongering, and most are in the government's pocket

and then there's max, who's essentially a supervillain but is really trying to make the world a better place by using her money/power/connections to improve living conditions for pretty much everyone except the straight white dudes already in power.

the world has come to accept superheroes and thinks they're great!! because they don't know about the shady shit that goes on beneath the surface, although there is a sort of understanding that heroes are more likely to save rich, important people, or that they'll help in disasters that look good for PR. it's just that they've got to make a living too, you know? you can't really blame them.

some more info about the world is in Max's app!!

the fun thing about the powers in this world is that they tend to come with a downside and are often related to someone's personality. max can shapeshift but has no sense of her own identity. integro can take injuries and heal, but has no empathy. so if you feel like playing around with that sort of thing, this is the universe for you

there are already some npcs here altho ariana is actually a pc now i just haven't updated the page but if you're interested in any of the other characters hit me up!!!

or if you have any other questions or wanna make a character in the world feel free to also hit me up!!

THE CANON: SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI: PERSONA 3

THE MEDIUM: uhhhhhh well it's a video game but also a manga and a movie, but mostly a video game. THE ORIGINAL (+The FES Expansion) Are for the Playstation 2, WHEREAS a Portable version was made in "visual novel style" lacking any cutscenes, but gaining an entirely different playthrough mode with a different main character. The plot progresses the same, but different character means different social links.

WAIT SOCIAL WHAT?: SOCIAL LINKS! Half of the game is dungeon-crawling and JRPG battling. This is where The PS2 and PSP versionas have some stark differences, with the PS2 version generally being considered "more difficult" in some ways. (For instance, you cannot control your party members directly, only the main character can use items, and you can only return to floors in the dungeon that have a teleporter. In the PSP version, you can direct control all party members, and there is a 'return to last floor' option, eliminating the need to re-climb 10+ floors because you had to bail early.)

THE OTHER HALF OF THE GAME IS BASICALLY A DATING SIM.

Your protagonist needs to make connections and ~care about the world~ to strengthen the monsters he summons, and to do that, YOU BETTER GO MAKE SOME FUCKING FRIENDS.

SOUNDS WEIRD. Yeah well so's your MoM.

WHAT ELSE? The game progresses on a day-by-day system- with different time slots giving you different things that can be done. School in the morning with potential for stat increases, which open up more social links, hanging out or shopping in the afternoon, and dungeon crawling or more social links in the evening. There's a huge cast of characters that I personally am very fond of.

Or you can watch the movies with are p. good.

TELL ME MORE: it's depressing, but also silly and ridiculous. The game always comes back to the inevitability of death, so expect that theme to saturate up in it heavily. But you also have fucking bizarro crazies as party members who do weird shit all the time.

Also, social links. You can seriously tell a six year old that it's her fault her parents are divorcing, and you lose no points for it. Another classmate tries to explain how he gets hungry by moonwalking into a restaurant, as opposed to walking normally. Your history teacher doesn't care about anything but samurai. Another teacher is a drunken cougar on the prowl in an MMO.

If you have a fondness for slightly-brutal (But not Origonal-SMT-style difficulty) JRPGs with tons of characters, I highly recommend it. Or, again, there's 2 movies out that are highly condensed, but very good. I personally recommend the P3:FES version on the playstation 2, if only because of the cutscenes and original writing staff, as opposed to the new PSP staff, which makes some new scenes feel a bit awkward to me.

But they are all good and fun! (The manga is confusing as shit so don't bother starting there). Dumb gifs or images will likely be posted under here, so look forward to it!

1. CANON IS ADVENTURE TIME GO WATCH IT IT'S BEAUTIFUL
2. You should like it because Flame Princess and Marceline are in it, duh. OKAY BUT really it's just a lot of fun? The characters are interesting, the world is completely fucking absurd in the best possible way, and the episodes can go from hilarious to awkward to heartbreaking to straight up fucking horrifying in a fraction of a second and it's great. Also, like I said, Flame Princess and Marceline are in it. That is honestly reason enough to watch it because they're both magnificent.

EX MACHINA

[personal profile] viced 2015-04-06 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
Ex Mᴀᴄʜɪɴᴀ

Okay, so why should you read Ex Machina? Haha, no really, why should you? Ex Machina is a 50 (+4 specials) issue comic book written by Brian K Vaughan (Saga, Runaways, Pride of Baghdad, etc) and art by Tony Harris (Starman, a bunch of other things) and it's pretty much about deconstructing the superhero genre as a whole. We start out with the first issue, where you meet this asshole named Mitchell Hundred while he's giving a speech, before someone tries to attack him with a crossbow -- which he tries to talk to with no results.

Turns out, our protagonist is a politician, the recently elected Mayor of New York City, and he was elected just recently after giving up a superhero career as the Great Machine -- just to run. Now he wasn't a popular superhero, because frankly he sucked at it. He was terrible, but he did one good thing, after he hung up his jetback, the 9/11 attacks happened, and he stopped one of the planes from destroying one of the towers. So fast forward a bit, and we find out that he's now the mayor of the fine city of New York.

What ensues is 50 issues that build to a conclusion about who Mitch is, how far he's willing to go for office, where his powers come from, and what he's supposed to do with them. I won't spoil it because it's a huge reveal, as is most of the final issue. Ex Machina is self-contained, weaving in about 3-4 issue arcs small pieces and pictures about Mitchell's powers, who he is, what he's done, and what the consequences of his actions are. Ex Machina isn't just about Mitchell, because he's only one person, but the people around him are really what make the story shine. Most of you are familiar with his head of security Rick Bradbury, and there's a huge cast of other characters, including his father figure Ivan "Kremlin" Tereshkov, Police Commissioner Angotti, January and Journal Jones, Reporter Suzanne Padilla and now-dead foe Jack Pherson, who often shows up in odd ways.

Ex Machina tells two stories, really. The story of the superhero in a series of flashbacks, and then the story of the politician trying to save the world in real-time. Like literally I have read this comic about 20-30 times and I'm often finding new details written into the comic either through the art or through the things the characters say. It's one of the most dense, intriguing, and fantastic comic books I've ever read, and I really do think it's BKV's best. Even better than Saga, but I think I'm biased.

Also it's really depressing. Just. It's So depressing this is literally one of the few comics that will make me devastated just from reading the first page, knowing what I'm setting myself up for. So why would you like this? If you have any interest in politics/superheroes, I'd definitely give it a try! It's rich with characters, from the man himself to everyone in his life, and everyone is a flawed, deep human being. The story isn't just about the plot, but the people involved in the plot, and every single person has so much going for them, you can't help but get attached to not just Mitchell, but the people who support him. Actually, half the time, they're more interesting than Mitch.

ANYWAY, besides that, how can we say no to art like this?

Also seriously if you want to read this, come see me
Just...come see me on plurk or something

dragon age games in general are really fun, but dragon age 2 in particular

WHAT IS THE PLOT:

Hawke flees a massive disaster in his or her homeland (which is covered in Dragon Age: Origins, also a cool game) with their family, arriving as a refugee in the hive of scum and villainy known as Kirkwall. Through countless misadventures and other terrible things over the course of 7 years, they climb the social ladder and somehow stumble right into being Kirkwall's very own Champion.

WHY YOU SHOULD LIKE DA2:

- basically about a roving gang of bisexuals ruining already shitty city
- the plot is very much character-driven (ignore all those re-used dungeons, ahaha.. ha... haha... yeah)
- seriously, Hawke's friends are just really, really all cool and interesting
- and so much fun time with your protag's family, so... much..... fun.... :')
- options! choose to play dude hawke or lady hawke, choose to be magicky or stabby, choose to be a diplomatic piece of shit, a sarcastic piece of shit, or an angry murder everything piece of shit! decide the fate of all your loved ones! and other things!
- automatically gain a "summon dog" spell regardless of choices
- because Hawke owns a dog
- a great dog
- all your friends visit you specifically to talk to your dog and not you what a bunch of jerks???
- it's only ten bucks on origin right now
