So what about before Christianity? Back when there were multiple Gods and all that crap? Is that ever explained?

Supernatural beings whose powers depend on the number of their followers. It's all taking advantage of a good thing: why go hunting your own virgins when dumb protohumans will bring you dozens of them for free?
