[There's an unspoken sentiment; he hadn't particularily enjoyed killing his great-grandmother, either. It had been a necessity. It had been about power. It had been to win his freedom. It had been to learn. The pleasure he had felt at felling his tormentor was a mix of all that, but it wasn't personal.

Yet it was. Because she was family.]

What about human beings?

[ That's how he feels about it too. Not that it was learning, but yes, that it was necessity. Killing without necessity is foolish; a waste of time and a waste of effort. And there are only so many angels. Lucifer would rather they joined him than die foolishly in God's plan. ]

Human beings aren't family. That doesn't mean I'm in a hurry to kill as many as possible. Is it my fault if genocide is a side effect of archangels fighting?

[Crane doesn't think it's his fault that humans die as a result of his work; a side-effect is a good, if unfortunate, way to put it. He doesn't kill for pleasure - he would rather humans survive and experience his work, and contribute to it. He enjoys hearing them scream, but killing is counter-productive. But it can sometimes be necessary. And he accepts that his decisions can make things end that final way.]

No. I suppose not.

[ So heavy. But Crane at least is in the position to understand the layers of meaning here, and find his own in the explanation. None of Lucifer's investments were in murder, after all; only corruption. ]
