The Headcanon Meme

I. Post with your character. If you've got a bunch, consider doing a catch-all under one header.
II. Poke other characters with questions. Ask about their childhood, crushes, their thoughts on game events. Anything you can imagine.
III. Answer questions people have left for you with your headcanon, or canon if it's been covered there.
IV. Feel free to go into as much or as little detail as you want.

S C R E A M SPREPARE FOR WORD VOMIT
-- Peter and Yondu are seriously complicated and weird and the most dysfunctional father-son relationship ever (that's not true actually but I like hyperbole). It's first and foremost a boss-employee relationship, and has been ever since Peter was a kid. Whatever reason Yondu has for keeping Peter (maybe Peter's dad wasn't coughing up his part of the bargain, maybe Yondu knew something about his dad that the audience still doesn't, maybe Yondu just genuinely liked Peter -- who knows), Yondu always viewed Peter as a Ravager first, child second. On the job, Peter is held to the same standard as the other men; obviously when he was a child, he would mostly be helping out on the ship. As he got older, Peter would be allowed on more important jobs, until he impressed Yondu enough to get solo missions. If he screwed up a job, he'd be punished; if a job went surprisingly well, he'd be praised. Pretty standard stuff.
After the jobs were done, though, I imagine Yondu had a soft spot for Peter. (I have headcanon that immediately after he was kidnapped, Peter fought back, which led to him headbutting the then firstmate in the crotch. Yondu's liked him ever since.) Once back on the Eclector, he treated Peter a little better than anyone else. Terrans are more delicate than the other species in the galaxy, so Yondu would always secretly check him over for injuries from a distance, keep an eye on him and immediately hound him (in private) if Peter was limping or favoring one hand over the other, that kind of junk. He would do the same for any of his crew, but never with quite as much vigor as he would with Peter. For Peter's part, I think he's oblivious to the special treatment and just thinks Yondu hates everyone, Peter included. It's why Peter has no qualms with betraying him.
My assumption is that Peter is the only Ravager Yondu's actually watched grow up; the rest of the Ravagers signed on of their own accord as fully grown men. Yondu was never interested in settling down and raising a family, so Peter is his one and only experience with child-rearing. And what an experience. He would never admit to Peter being something like his son, and Peter would never, ever say Yondu was like a father to him, but they both would acknowledge they were, in a way, family. Sure, Peter resents Yondu for kidnapping him, but admittedly, he sort of loves the life he's leading now, and he knows that despite everything, he owes Yondu a lot. And Yondu sometimes hates Peter because he's a smartass and a know-it-all and robbed him of one of the biggest hauls ever, but damn if he isn't a little proud of how that little asshole turned out.
ANYWAY YEAH they're a mess. They're a giant mess, but that's kind of what you get with family. If one were in trouble, the other would jump to help him. (After lengthy negotiation, wherein they decided what, exactly, would be gained after the trouble was dealt with.) They'd probably even take a bullet for one another, and afterward? They'd use it as a means of manipulation. ("Remember when I almost died for you? Yeah... anyway, about that money you owe me...")
... I am very sorry about how lengthy this became.

I love how at the end of the movie when Yondu finds the troll, he grins and it's kind of simultaneously like 'Quill, you piece of shit' and 'that's my boy.' Which I think you put into perspective so well!
How many times do you think Peter has heard the whole 'When I picked you up, these boys of mine wanted to eat you' story??
