Carl likes Ellie! I think she's the closest person his age he actually bonded with, and that's saying a lot considering that he spent god knows how long with the other kids at the prison in canon. While he got along with one or two kids who died early, there were a select few were either kind of acting dangerously weird to Carl, or the rest were too young. So a fellow survivor in his age bracket even if she's not from his world is refreshing to Carl, and it makes him feel less alone.
