IMPORTS IN THE MEDIA

Hey, guys. Remember this thing? I'm feeling like doing a little project next week (or month, depending on how big a response this gets) that's sort of related, and I need your help. I'd like to photoshop a series of media snippets in the style of this collection over on tumblr and I don't want to just rehash The Majority Report since that's a relatively small pool to choose from. So if you want some IC media of your characters visualized, fill out the form down there and I'll try to make it happen.

Also, if anyone else is super into this idea, I'd be happy to split the work with other artists.

But with her culottes, her scuffed-up leather jacket, her stylishly tousled bob, and her girl-next-door good looks, Kitty could be out walking on the street and you'd think she was just an ordinary teenager.

"I learned to blend in from a very early age," she explains, cupping her coffee mug with both hands. Kitty - real name Kathleen - does that a lot throughout our interview, whenever our discussion touches on the things that she's uncomfortable discussing. Her home, her family. Her world. Because that's the thing that's easy to forget about this bubbly, sweet, normal-seeming girl, but a thing that you can't forget if you want to understand who she is: less than a year ago, Kitty was on the run from a government that had labeled her a terrorist. And she's been on the run since she was thirteen years old.

Text: Francis Urquhart, new imPort PR operative, has a commanding presence when you meet him. His confidence radiates from head to toe and makes you feel the like the most important person in the world. It's enough to disarm, but when the important questions do come up, Francis is unafraid to answer them.

He speaks to his long years in British politics, though requests for specifics are met with reminders of 'this is a new start' and assurances that he hopes to bring in a bright new future between imPorts and the local population. He speaks of his old history only terms of how he joined politics because he has a genuine desire to serve and mentions it was bred into him by his family who'd served their country in various says since the King James of his world.

He also spoke of what he calls the act of terrorism at the registration. He decries the act, stating that his own world had been wracked with 'cowardly terrorists' and that the proper way to deal with it is not to respond with fear, but determination.

"My world didn't have fancy tricks and magic powers - but that's just flash. Each of us has our own power - that of self identity and determination. We decide how to react and we can decide that fear is beneath us. Terrorists, whatever their tools, want us to forget that. We can only make it through by coming together and deciding we're not going to be talked down to anymore."

He goes on to describe his faith in our ability to overcome fear and our enemies and his determination and fire is abundantly clear as he speaks.

Ultimately, Doctor Gottlieb calls for a surveillance system installed along tectonic subduction zones 'for a start'.

Text: In an article interviewing several different imPorts from low-tech worlds.

"I've had people tell me that I must have stepped right out of a fantasy novel," Kang says. In what he calls his normal form, he certainly looks the part, too - standing at a towering seven feet tall with wings, bronze scales, and horns.

At the moment, he appears human at a mere 6'4", blending in with the local populace. After two and a half years, he's learned how to go about his business without attracting too much attention. It helps, he mentions, that he's had plenty of dealings with humans at home, and that they are more or less the same no matter what world they are from.

"The technology on my world [Krynn] is nothing like this. All of our books are handwritten and travel is by foot, horse, or wooden boat. When I heard about atoms, and most sicknesses being caused by microscopic organisms, I almost thought someone was pulling one over on me."

He explains that he is one of the imPorts who also spent time on a previous world similar to this one, which gave him a chance to play a little catch-up. "I spent time in the library. I took classes. The maths and sciences were my favorites, especially physics; I already knew a good chunk of those from being an engineer for nearly forty years. And, it paid off. I have a GED now, which allowed me to get a promotion at my job."

ImPort Beat: How is it like living in civilization?
Carl: Well, I'm not exactly new to it. I was twelve when the virus hit.

What was the most difficult part about adjusting?
Food, probably. It took me months to adjust back to a diet where I don't have to hunt or eat straight out of the can. I spent more time in the bathroom than I did anywhere else.

What gets on your nerves the most?
The doomsday preppers. Half the people there got some things right, but you can't just have a hoard of supplies and think you'll be fine. It doesn't work that way. You still need people, and people are going to need you. People who try to strike out alone tend to die alone.

What do you wear at the apocalypse?
Just whatever fits you. Always wear layers when going into the woods, especially during winter.

What is it that you do, back home?
I used to do farming. Eventually our home got overrun, so it's been hitting the road lately.

Since arriving here, what is your favorite thing to do?
Eating out in restaurants. Go on rides, play arcades. That kind of stuff.

You used to go to Maurita Falls High School, but you dropped out. Why?
It just wasn't working out. I used to go to public schools, but I guess you can't just leave old habits on at the door. I now go to the Xavier's Academy for imPorts in Heropa. It's more one on one tutoring, which works out better for me.

Since you are registered: are you a superhero? Do you go out and fight crime?
No, I'm not good at that kind of stuff.

If you can pursue a career, what do you want to do?
I don't know. Maybe farming. A lot of stuff I'm good at don't really work well here, which is why I am at school, to get an education.
