Instinct told Jack that there was some truth to what Chilton was offering him. He would grant him the information necessary. In some way, Chilton's advisement would be desired; after all, he knew what things would be new to Jack himself, so he could provide the information that would tie into that. But he was not a man who sought Doctor Frederick Chilton's advice for a reason. That wasn't a coincidence.

His other instinct was that telling him his fate, telling him what lied ahead, was not a good idea. He didn't know the reason for it, not entirely, but something told him that if he handed over that information freely, it would be too big of a morsel for Chilton to have to digest. In fact, Jack worried that he would not be able to at all.

So he chose to approach it carefully, mulling over what he could or could not say. He knew Chilton would sense his hesitance. That, after all, was his job. He knew he would sense his hesitance, his lack of ease, or whatever he kept from him. He considered dropping pieces of information, but that was not the type of man he happened to be. There was no point to it.

"I'm afraid, Doctor," he said in a decisive motion, "that I'm not comfortable giving you that information. This whole ... timeline thing, it's very new. Perhaps in time." He studied Chilton carefully. "But if you wish not to help me because of that, I understand."
