The Personal Space Meme

Everybody's got to have their own personal space. Whether you're in government housing or have a place of your own, your home is your castle. Except not really, because I seriously doubt that many imPorts actually live in castles. Wait, where was I going with this?

Okay, yeah, so what's your character's living space look like? How have they decorated, or have they just stuck with the stock furniture? Have they made any upgrades (or downgrades)? Do they try to keep it clean, or does it look like Nonah #005 just came to visit? Do they have a home workspace? How about the common spaces or the exterior, any landscaping? Any skeletons in the closet, or body parts in the shed? Pets? Farm animals? Or anything else I left out, go wild.

Notes:
  • If you have housemates, go ahead and put everybody under the same top-level for easy reference.
  • The locations page has brief descriptions of the gov't housing setups in each city, for a nice little starting point.
  • Visual aids are encouraged!

Clocks. Clocks everywhere. Lining the walls, the bedside table...everywhere. Each is unique, some with tacky ornaments attached, some digital displays, some with ornate hands. Wherever he can find a clock, he collects it---though most of them are broken ones he's refurbished at this point.

Luckily for his housemates, he is not doing any experiments with their chimes.

Other than that, the space is cramped and a little messy. He's spent most of the last 20 years living and working in a tiny garage, so clutter is a comfort to him. It's pretty rare that anyone enters his room, but he'll clear a space for them if he want. There's a bench to sit on, at the least!

- like this, but she poured glitter into the paint can before she went to town . The lawn is full of tacky decorations.

- PET INVENTORY: five cats, plus or minus whatever Dipper's sneezed up that day. One actual real pig. One robot pig that used to be a roomba. One actual roomba that has a knife taped to the top (for fighting). Asher??

- Mabel and Dipper share a room. like this only messier and with more local band posters.

- There's hella security on that front door because Ford Pines. But Mabel and Dipper keep their window open for Ken to come and go and also Mabel just lets anybody in.

- Random shit around the house: A pink sword (thanks, Connie), a sweater stuck to the fridge through the power of hand-knit magnet yarn, a laser tag course in the backyard with alarmingly high-tech obstacles

Carl's Room

[personal profile] 112ounces 2016-03-08 05:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Carl doesn't do much of decorating the apartment - it's a sparse apartment, but he has collected knick-knacks over the year, so they are on a dresser or on a shelf or even a coffee table. And, of course, there are the bags of weapons Carl and Rick have collected, but these weapons are discreetly hidden.

(Look you can never be too careful!)

The only furniture Carl has in his room room is a single bed, a desk and a small bookshelf.

There's nothing much of decoration in there, except maybe a poster of a redwood forest. This room also has a duffle bag filled with weapons - Carl's personal stash, hidden underneath the bed. In another bag is an emergency bag of supplies - MREs, canned food, medicine and other medical supplies, anything you can think of, it's there. In that bag there's a large ziploc bag filled with the amount of one hundred dollars.

The books Carl have is a strange collection - some of them are just manuals of certain things, like how to fix a car or general outdoors-y manuals. There are a few fictional books, like there's the classics like Lord of the Flies (which Carl scribbles in the margins on survival failure 101, he really didn't like the book), Grendel, and The Heart of Darkness and there's plenty of native best sellers. But he reads a TON of comics and graphic novels, so those take up some of the space in his bookshelf.

[personal profile] khajidont 2016-03-09 03:10 am (UTC)(link)
GENERAL:

-The living room is stocked with an XBox, and is generally where Jaime keeps any technology he's accrued.
-The garage has at least his bike parked inside of it, but he's got a shitton of mechanic's equipment lying around; he owns several toolboxes and practises tinkering occasionally from time to time there.
-The kitchen is almost always well-stocked, with one drawer dedicated to junk for speedsters, and he tends to always have something from the Mexican bakery in the house. He usually cooks in bulk, so there's usually leftovers in tupperware in the fridge or freezer, labelled accordingly if they're for anyone to take.

JAIME'S ROOM:
-Tends to be a little on the messy side, though he's learning how to keep it tidy.
-Almost always has a stack of library books on the desk where his laptop lives.
-Corkboard above his desk crammed full of pictures of his friends (many of which have been ported out), and pictures of his family from home. There are more in a box below it, but he needs to organize them.
-His own trashbin that's always filled with weird dust... because he tosses his 'clothes' in there to disintegrate. He's disgusting. Judge him.
-Desk is full of a couple of binders of notes about this world.
-A ridiculous amount of merchandise he buys with his friends on it. If he's close to you and you have merchandise of yourself out there, chances are he's got it... but there's a certain bias towards some more hilarious Booster Gold products and a shitton of Flash.

shared space + riku stuff

[personal profile] resipiscent 2016-03-08 04:55 am (UTC)(link)
Riku's inventory.

Shared space reflects both boys pretty well: the fridge and cupboards are evenly stocked between normal food and junk food (though half the freezer is ice cream). There are probably a few dishes in the sink (despite the dishwasher). The kitchen table often has packages stacked on it, things Riku is working on sending out via portal. The kitchen and dining room are technically one large room.

The living room looks more or less the way you'd expect: a couch and chair set, a coffee table, and a TV. There's a basket on the coffee table where there's things like remotes and headphones. Sometimes batteries can be found rolling around in the bottom of it, and maybe a handheld game system and a few game cartridges every now and then. Strewn around the TV's stand there's a few DVDs -- some the boys bought and some that are leftovers from previous residents. After their movie night Riku left the Disney movies Normie gave him down here too. No sense having them in his room when they watch them down here. Atoli's cat tree is tucked against the corner of a window here. There are probably five hundred fuzzy mice and some tennis balls beneath the couch, too.

Connected to the living room is the little office, with bookshelves and a desk, where the communal PC lives. In here are also beds for Atoli and Shiro, though both of them tend to end up sleeping in one of the boys' rooms. The attic exists, but nobody really goes up there -- they don't have enough stuff to need to use it. There may be more boxes of old residents' things, though.

There's a garage, standard to Heropa houses, where Riku's vespa (it's black though) lives. There's pool stuff in here, water tests and additives and the like. Along the walls there are boxes containing items past residents have left behind. One of them smells weirdly like some sort of potpourri. (One of the empty bedrooms smells a little like this, too.) Leftover car parts and related tools are a thing there too, even though neither of them has one.

Outside, the lawn is fairly scruffy (weedy and sometimes very brown), and there's usually kudzu all over the fence. The whole back yard has a fairly high fence around it with a door built in -- this way the pigs (one more as of Princess Bubblegum's port-out) and the dog won't run off. It used to be just three-sided as a separator between houses, but Riku ended up having the gaps filled in when he got Yamada (the first pig). There's an in-ground pool that the pigs can sometimes be found in, sitting on the plastic stairs at the shallow end, and sometimes the dog paddles around there. In the corner built against the fence is a little shack where the pigs live. They're somehow litter-trained.

Riku's room is pretty basic: a bed against the wall opposite the door, a little table with a lamp beside it, a couple of bookshelves and a desk and chair. It's got three doors: the entrance, the closet and the attached bathroom. From his window the yard is visible, and by extension the pool and the little house where his pigs live. Riku's window faces more or less south, which is convenient because that way there's never sun in his eyes when he's in his room.

All clothes can be assumed to be in the dresser, or the closet either hung up or in the hamper because unlike Sora he likes a tidy room, generally. All regular weapons are also in the closet, lying on the floor against the back wall. The misc items are all over the place: on a shelf, the bedside table/inside its drawer, the windowsill, even. There's a skinny laptop and a few books that inhabit his desk most of the time, and a few library books, too.

The walls are un-decorated, mostly, though he's taped the few flat keepsakes he has (Mabel's valentine, Francis' party invitation, etc) above the desk. This guy will keep everything you hand him. In the desk drawer are the usual 'desk drawer' type things, a million pens and pencils, stationery. His file is in here too, shoved as far back as it'll go.

- framed picture of tucker's son junior around on some shelf somewhere

- a teal colored cat tree in the main living area

- pieces of teal/aqua space armor everywhere

- sound recording equipment off in one corner carefully arranged so it's not messed up

- HE HAS SOME MAGAZINES that would not be suitable for below 18 year olds

- the kitchen sees fairly regular use from Actual Cooking since it's the only thing Tucker's really good at, so constantly dirty-and-rewashed kitchen sets

- the house has got to be a little transdimensional or something because I know that just between Len & me, we've had the house looking like ten different things at ten different times. just roll with it

- the Doctor's disassembled every appliance at least once for parts and has repaired some of them and "improved" some others. This probably means that like, the blender or something like that is fucking terrifying and has the potential to take someone's arm off. Occasionally he burns something in the kitchen or something explodes and the house smells terrible. His bad, you guys.

- ON THE BRIGHT SIDE most of his clutter is relegated to his room except for the attic which the Doctor has laid claim to and is covered in star charts, with astronomy books all over the place. The floor's also littered with chalk in all colors and there's a big lovely "Go Away Humans (And Hazel)" sign on the trapdoor leading up to the attic.

- the Doctor's got three hermit crabs named after the Three Tenors. They hang in his room but occasionally chill with the Doctor up in the attic as he talks to them about stars. The Doctor's room is a bit of a shitshow in the sense that it's organized chaos. whereas one of the other Doctors would just have their room be a total mess, this Doctor's room is a total mess but it's like, a mess of containers.

- he also plays guitar at 3 am. please hit him with something.

M's Apartment

[personal profile] heliophilic 2016-03-08 03:26 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks to tech M happened to have on him when ported in, he was able to re-grow (comics!) a pretty much exact replica of his apartment that exists between cities here. The only way to gain access is through a glowing golden-orange Door that only M can create.

This is what it looks like:

And the text I pretty much use whenever I need to describe the apartment is:

M's apartment is a large, modern two floor loft with neutral walls, ceilings, and floors, though it's most striking feature is that it has no windows and doors. The first floor, is an open space with a few columns for support, with the space divided into several areas: the small kitchen area is to the far right, with a large island separating it from the rest of the area, the living room, is closer to the center of the room on the left, with a pleather sofa, sectional, and armchair set up in a u-shape around a sparse entertainment center. In the far end of the room on the left left is a large table for eating or planning, and to the right is a billiards table beneath the floating stairs leading to the second floor.
The second floor is pretty sparse, consisting of some gym equipment in one area, and a dresser and an armoire in another. He doesn't like to sleep in a bed, so he doesn't have one.

Shepard & Kaidan's Place

[personal profile] sassguard 2016-03-08 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
They live in a two-bedroom garage apartment in Heropa. There's a conspicuously repaired hole in the wall between the bedrooms (which looks suspiciously like someone might have crashed through it at some point in the past). There isn't actually a bed in the second room, since they ended up pushing their beds together, so it's mostly been relegated to storage.

Everything is pretty clean and well-kept, although there's the obvious small signs of disorder you can expect when you live with an active dog (plenty of dog beds and discarded toys from time to time, despite efforts to clean up). Boo II (Shepard's hamster) lives in a ridiculously elaborate set of tunnels set up in one corner of the room, when he's not running around in his clear plastic ball.

The fridge is as terrifyingly well-stocked as you'd expect one that belong to two full-grown biotics would be.

Shepard's bike and some gym equipment live in the garage, as does a mini-fridge.

kasumi's ~secret lair!

[personal profile] stealwithit 2016-03-08 03:57 am (UTC)(link)
well what do you know Kasumi just moved to her own place in Maurtia Falls after spending a year in the Heropa government housing complex! good timing!

- so this is what kasumi's quarters on the normandy looked like. now imagine that but cranked up to like 20 but also not so futuristic and more retro because of the setting!

- she snagged herself a small but vertically spacious loft apartment in a row home in downtown Maurtia Falls! you know, to be closer to "work." the lease was probably signed with a fake name and fake documentation to go with it but details... also she's a sucker for exposed brick. it's so antique.

- but do not be deceived by the tidiness of the aforementioned picture. Kasumi's pad is full of stolen things. artwork/paintings, mostly, but there's probably a few textiles and a small sculpture or two. there are also lots of plants. not enough to be a jungle, but enough to say this chick seriously digs flowers.

- the small living room area below reads more like this, with paintings leaning against the wall in stacks, more plants, a record player (and records, she's hip). the paintings/art hanging on the walls are the ones she's not planning on selling back, or at least she's planning on keeping them for a while.

- there's a corner on the lower level that doubles as a study area and a dining area, except she almost never has company over so all of her "work" things have spilled over to the small round table where she's supposed to be eating. the desk and the wall behind it very much look like this sans ashtray. she's a busy lady okay.

- finally, the loft is arranged pretty similarly to how it's pictured in the loft photo, but also sort of like this as well, where there's artwork on the walls, a bookshelf, a lower bed with nice blankets and sheets that she never fixes up after getting out bed. and more plants. and shit like books and journals strewn across the floor.

- OH, AND. kasumi's windows are either tinted or heavily draped because haha no one can ever find out what goes on in there. so her place is lit pretty much exclusively by interior lighting 90% of the time (her poor plants??)

Dorian & Toby's love nest

[personal profile] brushoff 2016-03-08 04:03 am (UTC)(link)
- It's not a ground floor apartment, probably more like second or third floor over anything else. The toilet's new because their last one got pushed out a window (THANKS, BILLY). The couch is newish because the last one got covered in blood (THANKS, ABDUXEL). It's clean for the most part but the state of cleanliness is 100% Toby's doing.

- pretty swank tv with whatever the inuniverse equivalent of a Playstation is. Have fun shooting at things, buddy.

- the fridge is depressingly empty because neither of them can cook and Toby drinks blood. There's always a couple of takeout containers in there as well as like, the basics, but that's it. That being said, there's always booze and mixers around the apartment somewhere and...usually some form of totally illegal drugs in Dorian's room.

- all of the windows have super heavy blinds on them.

- there's probably some nice art that's hung up on the walls that Dorian obtained totally legally and did not fall off the back of a truck, no sirree.

[personal profile] brushoff 2016-03-08 04:18 am (UTC)(link)
Dorian's room is basically monochrome with a little bit of red in like, bourgie accent pillows. There's a couple of REALLY BIG floor-length mirrors, clothes constantly on the floor, a large bookshelf that's bursting at the seams with books, and the world's saddest fish swimming in a bowl too small for it on a side table.

Overall, Dorian's room is like somebody used to having a really big house is trying to adjust to living in a smaller space because spoilers, he is (why can't the government fund mansions instead of apartments!!!). So his closet's bursting at the seams, his bed is a little too bed, he's got an armoire that's going to be a nightmare to move out of the house if he ever moves and like, only 25% of the floor doesn't have furniture on it.

There's a box of painting supplies under his bed and a half-finished painting shoved in his closet. Needless to say, if he does any painting, it's gonna be done in the living room (and make the whole house smell like paint fumes in the process, thanks bud).

De Chima Apartment - Nerd Edition

[personal profile] driftsintobuffetline 2016-03-08 04:14 am (UTC)(link)
The most notable feature about the apartment Newt and Hermann share in De Chima is the chalkboard walls. EVERY WALL in the apartment has been covered with chalkboard paint by an overly ambitious Newt, and decorated with equations, doodles, and notes. Feel free to write on the walls if you visit, but be warned: this is not the apartment for allergy sufferers.

Newt has a few godzilla and pulp-film posters up in his rarely-used bedroom, a room that's now become a catchall for anything they're experimenting with or otherwise don't need in the livingroom. His personal spaces tend to be cluttered or full, not necessarily mess, just full, because he likes stuff and he likes spaces to not feel empty. His belongings have started to migrate into Hermann's room, little by little.

I think Youko likes this for the layout; "Newt's" room is the Master Bedroom.

- Ripley leaves dishes everywhere. EVERYWHERE.

- also socks. she takes off her socks as soon as she gets in the house and just leaves them where ever.

- also lego. i'm so sorry. there's a 90% chance that if you enter this house you will step on a lego she's left on the ground.

- she absolutely dresses off the floordrobe. all her clothes are all over her bedroom floor. and covered in wolf hair.

- on that note, her pet wolf jackson, his bed is literately a pile of blankets and whatever clothes he's grabbed from the floor and piled into a corner. her own bed really doesn't look all that disimiliar

- she's also got a sizable "fish" tank in her room that houses her many many hermit crabs. it's probably the cleanest thing around.

- there's a desk. somewhere. under stuff. her school work is all piled on there waiting to be finished (it never will be)

- the walls of her room are covered in drawings she's done. a lot of them are of her and her friends from back home, but chances are if you're buds with ripley she's drawn the two of you doing something and stuck it on her wall. she never takes any of them down either, so there's definitely drawings of folks who aren't around anymore.

- among those drawings there's also some cute motivational cat posters too.

Sabriel's Condo

[personal profile] bindsthedead 2016-03-08 04:33 am (UTC)(link)
Which she won as a prize for participating in the dinner party murder mystery at the swear-in in June last year.

The main area is a kitchen/dining area close to the front door that opens up to a seating area/den, and a small balcony.

Along the main area there are doors leading to the bathroom, Sabriel's study, a guest room, and Sabriel's bedroom. The entire place is decorated in Sabriel's prefered style- somewhat old-fashioned, with dark colors and wood trim. Most of the pictures and knicknacks on the walls are gifts from Magicman or her other friends. Aside from that, there are several bookshelves that are gradually accumulating more and more books.

Aside from her bed and dresser, Sabriel's bedroom functions as a sort of mini-armory- there's a rack by her bedside for her bells and sword, and a stand for her armor. Other sharp pointy things are kept in the closet. There are also beds for the viruses Magicman gave her as pets.

The entire place is warded pretty heavily- Sabriel's serious about maintaining her privacy, and making sure no one tries to break in and steal her bells, or otherwise spy on her/attack her while she's off-guard.

Fuu

[personal profile] monster_san 2016-03-08 04:58 am (UTC)(link)
Fuu has a lot of books and computer stuff in her room. A lot of it is books on contemporary history/society because she is CATCHING UP on the last 23 years. They tend to be put away in various places. It is actually not super neat and organized even though she'll neaten stuff in the shared spaces of the house; stuff tends to pile up on her desk and gets shuttled around the room as she needs to make space.

She also has a small TV and gaming stuff. Apparently her Gameboy and SNES are now "vintage" equipment, but they're the most used ones. She also has a 3DS, WiiU, and PS4 courtesy of her job, but she tends more towards the Professor Layton, Journey-type games than eg Tales Of due to Reasons and also not being a huge fan of hi-def rendered bloodspatters and voiceacted cursing.

She's also got some windchimes and a small spider plant up by the window (which is open unless the weather is dirty) and while the room is not 100% green, has a lot of green accents.

Klarion's basement apartment!

[personal profile] beneathbluerafters 2016-03-08 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
Klarion has a tiny bachelor apartment in the same building as Dorian and Toby; his is in the basement, and it basically looks like a goth college student's first time living away from home. The curtains are almost always drawn, leaving the place dark, and most of his furniture is either makeshift or taken from the side of the road. There's a bed, a couple of bookshelves (one made of milk crates, one actual wood), a beanbag chair patched together with duct tape, and one of those big, clunky CRT television sets that went out of style in the early 2000's up against the wall. His kitchen is full of junk food, including lots of sugary cereal, and his fridge is... sometimes fully stocked? He has a habit of teleporting up to Dorian's apartment and raiding his fridge whenever he runs out of stuff, or just thinks he can get away with it.

Most importantly, the walls and the doorjamb are covered in sigils, wards, and arcane symbols. Klarion has spent a lot of time making his apartment the magical equivalent of Fort Knox, anybody who tries to get in without his permission will not enjoy the consequences!

Chilton and Raina's Heropean duplex

[personal profile] slightlyoffchilt 2016-03-08 05:45 am (UTC)(link)
This property was purchased by Chilton in the late summer of 2015, armed with the intention of sharing the space with his significant other, Raina. His tastes favor the modern minimalist, emphasizing geometric style and focal points of color amidst structural grays, blacks, and whites. Chilton takes every opportunity to exhibit his stylized education, and maintains a cultured supply of wine in an entire (but thankfully singular) room. In the living space, he will inevitably keep large vases of green hydrangea and white lilies.

Cannibal House

[personal profile] enucleation 2016-03-08 07:49 am (UTC)(link)
Kaneki got this house for all the cannibals to live in here. What a blast.

The house has three rooms in total, a kitchen and a small living/common room which recently got a new bookcase because Kaneki has no room to put his books. There is only one bathroom so they kiiinda have to share that. The kitchen is small but strangely equipped with all sort of accessories for cooking and they actually eat together there; the fridge and cabinets have normal food because Kaneki does cook even if it's for other people only (plus, if someone comes to visit, they can eat something that doesn't come from people).

The important part is the basement. Rule number one of all guests: DO NOT GO INTO THE BASEMENT. There are two fridges under the stairs and inside packages and containers with dates; they are cannibals, you can guess what all of that is. The basement has a lot of books there, about fighting and martial arts, and a lot of it has been destroyed and then repaired - this is where Kaneki trains. It's very common for things to be broken there, but at least Kaneki is careful with he fridges.

Kaneki's room is smallest of the house and usually very clean. He has a small one person bed, one nightstand, a desk and the walls are covered in bookcases and shelves, all currently full. Kaneki has a lot of sketches laying around which he eventually just trashes and throws away when he remembers.

He is also the one who does the house chores HE IS VERY GOOD AT IT and keeps him busy.

Kang's apartment

[personal profile] governorkang 2016-03-08 09:26 am (UTC)(link)
It's a comfortable little studio apartment on the third floor with large windows and a small deck facing a pretty wooded area. He doesn't worry much about anyone looking in, so the curtains are almost always open to let in the light. He also likes to keep the windows open when he can during nice weather. The deck has a chair and a little table for relaxing.

All of the furniture besides the couch and the bed is handcarved wood in an older style (some of which he worked on himself), which looks a little strange with the more modern apartment features - even the bookshelves that cover one of the walls. It helps make the place feel more like home to him. Said bookshelves are filled with all sorts of books (mostly history, tech, and engineering/physics, with a few other topics he finds interesting) and there are a few simple knickknacks for decoration: small wooden siege engines, cloth minotaur and dragon dolls, and frames with various photos in them.

One may also notice that the furniture is a little larger than normal for a human and the chairs are designed with wings in mind.

The kitchen is small, but manageable for one person who doesn't cook really fancy things. And, he doesn't have much in the way of dishes. The pantry has very little in the way of processed foods, with Kang preferring to buy fresh and raw when he does cook. It is, however, always well-stocked with alcohol.

The entire place is kept clean, with dishes not allowed to pile in the sink or clothes to gather on the floor. Any clutter that happens is usually on the table or on the couch, with his schoolwork and blueprints and city project details getting scattered. His laptop also lives in that area when he's home.

A medium-sized painting from home of himself, his mate, and their nine children has a place of honor on the wall, visible as soon as someone walks in to the common area and from the sleeping area.

Flynn has just arrived, so his room isn't exactly individual. But he's reasonably willing to pitch in.

He'll get a computer and some CDs when he settles in.
