TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at someone else's thread, either!

01. The city of Heropa is what one might expect from a small, bright and cheery place, where locals are friendly enough and local shop owners might offer a free drink to welcome you to their fair city. Some of the locals might thank you for always lending your service to the nation and others might not say anything. In fact, some people might back away from any imPort who quite obviously looks like they aren't from around the neighborhood. Once in a while there's a look of disdain on someone's face and hushed voices. An upset voice wonders aloud: "More of them, when we already know they can't protect us? That's just painting a bigger target on the city's back!" However, they're quickly hushed with a judgmental: "They helped save the cities, and it's the Soviets you should be angry with anyway! The imPorts are here to protect us!"

02. De Chima, Virginia, is a large city with a healthy economy, and though it's quieter, there are just as many citizens awed at your presence. Many people are out and about taking care of their regular business, but that doesn't distract them from crowding you in excitement if you're obviously from a different time or world, or just let it slip that you're a newcomer. Children and young teenagers are especially likely to ask for an autograph and a photo.

Some locals seem less enthused to see you. They never make an approach, but they can be overheard scoffing and muttering something about spies. "How can we trust any of them now?"

03. Maurtia Falls, Pennsylvania, is not as friendly and its citizens tend to go out of their way to avoid walking down the same sidewalk as the more obvious looking imPorts pass through. Local cops say nothing, but they scowl at those imPorts and mutter under their breaths resentfully about "vigilantes". However, not all locals turn the other way seeing imPorts; some of them will offer a polite enough smile and thank them for their help in overthrowing the trespassers. They don't stop to clarify what they mean, though.

04. Nonah, North Carolina, is the liveliest of all cities; loud, busy and there's some kind of energy in the air that gets everyone buzzing with excitement. Anyone who they come to determine an imPort is bombarded with all sorts of offers; job offers, advertising gigs, spokesperson for advocating children stay in school, etc. Anything and everything! You name it. Shops offer discounts for food and clothing, whatever they need. Advertisements are abound for imPorts to make appearances at various, televised celebrations, luring them in with promises of free food, merchandise, and payment.

Yeah, actually, I do. He's the original KF -- and the original Robin's here too. You're older than them, right? You know... you know another KF?

[Aw, crap, she's from Bart's time, isn't she? That's just what Kid needs, another person to look at him like a dead man.]

[M'gann has to put a hand over her mouth for a moment.] Wally...

[She recovers and gives Blue Beetle a shaky smile.]

Y-yeah. He's still pretty new to being Kid Flash, though.

Ugh.

[Jaime rubs at his face with both hands. He'd been so happy to see M'gann at first, but now... god, this is going to be a lot harder for her than it is for him, but he can't help but think of Wally's welfare instead of M'gann's, right off the bat, anyway.]

I'm sorry, M'gann, this got real serious, real fast. But, um... I think we should talk somewhere that's not in the middle of an alley. You wanna go sit somewhere, or...?

[wifeonmars]

Sure. Do you know somewhere or...?

[She floats in the air expectantly. M'gann kind of wishes she had her bioship right now.]

...this would be way easier if we had a base somewhere, or something. This isn't a rooftop kind of conversation, I don't think. Nobody should be home at my place, though.

You know who I am, right? Underneath the mask, I mean?

[No use in giving away his secret ID on a hunch, after all.]

[wifeonmars]

Maybe we can work on that. It'd be nice to be in a tower or something instead of a cave for once.

[Or an abandoned warehouse, thanks, Nightwing.]

Oh you're-- [M'gann looks around quickly, before projecting telepathically.]

Jaime, right?

Oh!

[He outright jumps when he hears her voice, eyes wide and mouth slightly ajar. He'd known M'gann back home, but she'd never said hi inside his head. He's used to there only being two voices in there, but he can't say that it's a bad thing -- just an unexpected thing.]

Um, yeah, that's me! Man, I've never had someone do that to me before; it feels kinda different from doing it over the comms. C'mon, let's head over to Heropa. We'll talk at my place.

[wifeonmars]

Sorry! Sorry. We usually use a mindlink on our team so I thought... Sorry!

[M'gann reminds herself that even though he looks like the Blue Beetle she knows, he isn't. Briefly, she wonders if she's overstepped a little. Better to be cautious with her telepathy for awhile.]

Lead the way!

[She heads up into the sky, waiting for Jaime's cue.]

No, no, it's okay! Better than saying it out loud. We just never did the whole mindlink thing!

[Mostly because the Teen Titans have the subtlety of a car alarm and tend to barrel into situations like the large group of brightly coloured kids they are, probably while screaming, possibly while exploding. It happens.]

It's a while away, but it's better than, like, going to a diner to do this.

[Even if it's a ways away, that doesn't pose a significant roadblock for people who can fly and who have free use of the Porter. Eventually, Jaime comes to a stop a couple blocks away from his house so that he can find a nice, discreet place to power down.]

We're close by now. Um, I just need some privacy to get outta this, [he says, gesturing down at himself, because unlike his counterpart, he'd prefer not to run around naked. His preferences don't tend to stop him, but hey, when he has control over it...]

[wifeonmars]

[M'gann follows closely behind Jaime, occasionally swooping down to take a look at something interesting before joining him again.

When they alight, she gestures to herself.]

Should I um, be incognito too? Protect your identity and everything?

[khajidont]

[Jaime powers down (he hisses, but just a little; when he re-emerges, he's steaming a bit, but he doesn't look bothered), but once he's finished, he comes back out, good as new.]

One perk of this place? Everyone's got powers. Having someone from Mars isn't even a little bit weird.

[Even considering the tough conversation they've got coming up, Jaime can muster up a smile at M'gann.]
