TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

Dude... [Yeah, no, he's just weirded out now.] What did you just do?

[But after the initial reaction of just staring wide-eyed, he steps closer, a concerned look on his face.]

You alright?

...hers isn't really charm, is it?

[With her father the undisputed leader of Deluxe, not being able to afford something isn't a concern that she's ever had. It's obviously one here, though, so she laughs a little to cover her mistake. They may be used to strange people in this city, but blending is still important.]

Right, sorry. I just got here so I don't really know how much everything costs yet. Or... anything, really! Beyond what they told me in the car.

[And indeed, someone does.

He's little more than a blue blur as he leaps into the street, snatches the kids, and back onto the sidewalk. It's over in the space of a blink, and any present onlookers might need a moment to place where exactly the kids went.]

Oi, playing in the street is dangerous!! Be more careful!

[But the kids just kind of laugh at his vehemence and run off, thanks old man, later!

Kotetsu heaves a sigh and starts walking back down the street in Shinji's direction, grumbling something unintelligible under his breath.]

[Chad knows some crazy rich people, but he's never been one himself and it's a concept that's a bit difficult to wrap his mind around. He nods at her words though.]

Fair enough. Hey, it's the same with me, really, so for all I know everyone owning really cool cars here looks just like me. I'm Chad, by the way, and I've no idea what to make of this place.

That's Wright they don't. [She looks awfully proud of that one.]

Okay. I need you to come inside with me, say you're my father, and that you think it's okay for me to perform here.

[A pause.]

So... the truth, basically.

[His own expression's mirroring Chad's pretty well. Okay, well, maybe not that concerned but definitely wide-eyed and surprised.

'So. That's elasticity, I guess.']

I'm fine. [He pushes himself away from the wall, but he's still keeping his distance as his hands come up to adjust his hat. He doesn't say anything for a minute as he regards Chad, eventually rolling his eyes.]

You would have super-speed.

[ Gil had been further down the street when he noticed someone with a slender frame — a young girl, no doubt — slipping into an alleyway rather conspicuously. Although no one else appears to notice her enter and not come back out, he decides to pursue this girl, a touch concerned anyone would cut through an alleyway even at this time during the day.

By the time he emerges around the corner, she's already crouched below and looking anything but fine to him. He doesn't step close yet, waving a hand to garner her attention.

In what others would call an English accent: ] Excuse me, are you alright?

Yeah, well...

[He doesn't have a witty retort at the ready. If he wants to be anything like the heroes in his comic books from back when he was small he'd really have to step up the game.]

What is that thing you have? Being wobbly?

[Oh, awesome. While Shinjiro-- doesn't quite understand what just happened, the kids don't get smashed into the pavement, and the speeding hovercar chase is welcome to continue. More interesting, though, was that guy's crazy movements, looking like little more than a bright light of blue as he'd swept up the kids.

That was certainly interesting. And it meant that the guy was like him, right? Brought to Florida for some government purpose, and clearly with abilities normal people couldn't boast of. And that meant he might know a bit more than Shinjiro did at present.

So he shifts direction slightly as Kotetsu passes, to walk almost alongside him- lifting his head slightly to glance through his bangs at the older guy.]

...Pretty impressive there. What was that, super-speed or something?

[There's a shrug which also induces a strange sort of ripple effect.]

Don't worry about it.

[He puts a hand on Ryan's shoulder without really thinking about it, mostly to kind of hold him in place. Strange.]

Least of the worries right now, I guess. You just got here, too?

Hey, hey. She's got charm.

[ if Danny knows anything, it's that Mindy Lahiri has her own special kind of charm that he'd fallen for. he had real feelings for her. she saw him, pushed him to see his father. he liked her. but they'd broken up because of his own issues. he knows that. it's why he broke up with Peter's sister. why he was trying to get their friendship back. it's not a matter of thinking he'd made a mistake. it's a matter of going there in the first place. it was hard. and it was wrong. they were coming close to wrecking a friendship.

but it doesn't mean he still doesn't care about her. he cares about her more than anyone in the practice. and definitely more than anyone here. when she wants to be, Mindy Lahiri can be quite charming -- okay, the charm usually comes inadvertently ]

She's just not - using it at the moment.

[As soon as there's a hand on him though Ryan stretches his body again to try and slip out of Chad's grip. Dude why are you touching him don't touch him what even.]

Yeah, just a few hours ago I guess. Where're the others? [He assumes that if Chad's here, Troy and the other Wildcats must be, too.]

I've been here for like, a week, but I haven't actually seen much. [He grimaces.] And at the rate they're going, they're just bringing more chaos in. They've managed to bring in criminals in from other worlds. My world too.

[It would be hard to sound more unimpressed than Jaime does right now, frankly. He knows that superheroes are supposed to be all optimistic and upbeat - unless you wear black and grunt a lot - but it's hard to have a lot of faith in a structure that brings in people from Arkham and gives them power. He's never been to Gotham, but he knows enough to know that they're not just your regular, run-of-the-mill crazies, and that giving them possibly destructive superpowers is just asking for trouble.]

Wish I had better news for you than that, but this is what we're working with here.

[He just pulls his hand back as if he's been burned, wondering whether Ryan can't control his body or if he meant to do that. Either way, he's so not touching that again.]

I dunno, man. You're the first I've seen. [The first from East High, of course.] Where's Sharpay? [Because wicked things come in pairs.]

[And suddenly this conversation got weird. He's not sure what he just walked into, he just knows it's something kinda serious that a 16-year-old has no business getting involved in so he does what he does best. Changing the subject. Yeah. Great idea.]

It's probably better for her not to use it until she needs it anyway. Do these powers have limits or what? [It's mostly a rhetorical question, but all things considered.] How is any of this even real?

[A combination of both really. He didn't want Chad touching him, period. However the rippling effect has him a little scared and it shows on his face briefly. He focuses on the question Chad just asked though.]

I don't know. [And that has him a little wary, too. Sharpay was always around. Sharpay was always by his side because yes, Evanses came in pairs.] You're the first I've seen, too.

I struggled with that at first, too. But, if it weren't real, I can't see how I'd think up all this very specific stuff. I liked comic books as much as the next kid but I grew out of them. It's just a random scenario I could think up. [ Plus, he's not sure anybody could do Mindy well at all. She is her own ... flavor of ... she's just very unique . ] Which is to say, I'm also new here. Power limitations and the like, I don't even know yet. But you're right about saving it until she needs it. In case there are limitations. You're a smart kid. [ If ... fashionablish. Mindy seems to think so. ] You okay, though? You uh - are your parents here?

Julie, and same here. [She holds out a hand to shake.]

Did they tell you that they brought you here to be one of their government heroes? [She's not sure how she feels about that, and it shows. Helping people is one thing, but helping the powers that be without a clear reason? Not usually so great in her book.]

That makes no sense. [Seriously, who'd pick them out of all the people they knew? ...alright, maybe Chad could see a point with picking himself, but Ryan? Hardly superhero material.]

You can do that thing with your voice and... whatever, turn your body into jelly? Is that it?

Nice to meetcha. [He shakes her hand before nodding again, lifting his shoulders in a shrug at the same time.]

Yeah. I played superhero as a kid, guess everyone did that, but the heroes in my comic books had more of a say in it.

[He's pretty much on her page there.]

[Not that the girl was smiling before, but the comment on her having anything to do with the police leaves Mathilda with a sour tone.]

I don't work for them.

I... haven't tried approaching anyone else around here, and you've got ice magic so... [if anything bad happens they'll have some offense? something like that? Nah's helpless without her Dragonstone (not that she realizes she wouldn't even need it anymore) and she'd rather not wander in an unfamiliar land alone.]

Come on, let's team up! Please? The ice will melt on its own.

That's the part that creeps me out the most. They didn't seem to be the kind of people who'd be too happy if someone rejected their offer. [They probably wouldn't kidnap and torture people if they didn't go along with their plans, but she can't help but worry.]

--anyway. Do you have hovercars where you're from? Even if you don't own one, I mean. [Time to try to lighten the mood.]
