TEST DRIVE MEME
Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!
Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!
And remember to have fun!01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.
02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.
03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!
04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

A dragon was flying around town killing random people. Max Payne was nowhere near drunk enough for this shit. Ever since being ImPorted he had made it his business to keep far away from other people's business, far away from 'superhero' crap. He just kept his nose down, did his best (more or less) at the job the government gave him, and kept a pistol around just in case of trouble.
But this? This was Hell on Earth, fire raining down from the sky like the Apocalypse, a beast straight out of the Bible dropping people to their deaths just to watch them splatter. The smart thing to do would have been to stay out of it, lay low, clear out of town, but Max couldn't do that.
"Hell with it." He reached into his long black coat, drew his pistol, and advanced toward the nearest source of flames and screams. He saw a masked man with a machine gun firing at random windows, blasting doorways, rampaging. One of the dragon's goons earning his keep terrorizing random people. Max shot him down in the street, two shots to the heart. Then he walked over to his body to help himself to the machine gun.
One asshole down, God knew how many more to go, plus a dragon. It was going to be another one of those nights.

For now, however, she keeps flying this way and that, until she decides to land with a heavy thud. Tail lashing out arrogantly, she already destroyed a streetlight, its metal bending over in protest. She already seen several overturn cars, the strange, hovering vehicles. Testing her strength, she picked one up with her jaws and flung it on the other side of the street, noting how much damage it has taken to buildings. Satisfied, she took up another into her jaws and turned a corner, seeing a man crouching over one of her dead followers, stealing his weapon.
She doesn't even miss a beat. With her strong neck muscles and jaws, she tosses the car toward the thief, hoping to see if it might squash him.

There's no time to run, no room to dodge except in one direction only. Max drops the machine gun and jumps. He leaps forward, feet leaving the ground as he goes horizontal, trying to dive under the car. Time seems to slow down around him. He takes it all in- the glow of the fires, the teeth marks on the car, the pavement passing by beneath him.
Then the car flies over him and crashes into the street behind him while Max belly-flops onto the pavement- a painful landing, but he's alive. He scrambles to his feet clutching his pistol, and looks at the dragon. He yells out at her, half a challenge, half an expression of outrage at what's happening around them.
"What is your fucking problem?"

Smoke starts to rise from her nostrils, a warning of what will come soon. "Care to volunteer?"
And like a serpent, she strikes, mouth agape, her teeth long and gleaming and sharp, with spittle flying.

Fear claws at Max's belly, but he doesn't let it control him. Reflex takes over and once again the world seems to slow down into bullet-time. Max jumps backward, lying down in mid-air, hurtling away from the dragon's maw. Her teeth slash by close enough to rip at the soles of his shoes, slicing away rubber and leather. He can feel her hot breath travelling up the legs of his pants.
The dragon is so close and Max is so fed up. As he flies backward, arcing down toward the ground, he points his pistol straight at her blazing red eye and pulls the trigger. If there's any vulnerable spot on this thing, that might be one of them.
