TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ She listened. She had no choice, given her own stance on survival. Annie coughed, and though her lungs and throat and eyes and nose burned, she breathed.

Gathering herself together, she seemed to curl inward, gasping on for breath as the coughing slacks off. Only it's a prelude to standing, done with deliberate slowness. Annie uses the railing for support, not sure if it was for show or otherwise.

Her eyes focused on Levi as she breathed in and out, not saying a word. Whatever powers he had been granted by this world were unknown to her, and hers were not granted, so much as maintained. She hadn't tested to see if it were true or not. ]

[ Her neck was exposed in her erratic throes as he clawed for every bit of air she could to force at the sea water she swallowed. It would be quick, and more than she deserved; he had the weight and even the height over her to reach out and snap her neck like a twig. He reached out and found purchase on her soaked clothes twisted in his fingers.

And then he pulled her up; maneuvered her to sit bent over and slapped the small of her back to let gravity work what was left of the saltwater out of her. ]

[ She tensed, protesting without fighting against his pull when it didn't have her in pain immediately there-after. Levi was intelligent. She'd grant him that much, and that whatever he hoped to gain would come down the line.

Bile and seawater came up after her back arched, trying to reject what it had so inadvertantly taken in. It splashed down on the dock, avoiding them both by chance. Mostly water. Slightly acridic, but mostly salt water.

Annie coughed and wheezed and breathed, and she pulled away from Levi. No thank you. No thanks at all. Levi had no reason to know her name beforehand, and to know her now would only mean he knew in the grand sort of revelation Armin had proposed. Voice raw, breath still raspy, she speaks. ]

I can breathe.

[ Florida might be temperate, but the sea water was like ice and stuck to you like nails. Knees aching from the cold water that soaked his pants down into the joints where it chilled the bones. He could hear them pop and groan in protest as he pushed himself back to his feet. Annie he didn't offer a hand to this time; it was no longer a matter of life or death, and she had enough life in her to stand on her own two feet.

He still remembered his promise to cut off her limbs. One at a time. ]

If you can breathe then you can walk. Get up. Commander Smith will want to know you're here, and safe.

[ She remembers, too. All the less appealing for knowing that they'll grow back, and he can do so again. And again. And again, as long as she was fed.

Annie stood without trouble, relying on sheer stubborn willpower and a lifetime of learning how to stand after falling. Her face was a mask of neutrality, pushing her damp hair back from her forehead and wringing water out of her sweatshirt as she stood. ]

Kind of him to be concerned.

[ A raspy, dry statement at odds with her current state of affairs. It was a source of information she hadn't had before, learning Erwin was here. Two prominent members of the Scouting Legion, in a world that didn't know what the Scouting Legion was. It was almost laughable. ]

[ And again, and again. Levi could never be accused of sentiment, but he was vindictive. Unfortunately that angry heart had the cold, pragmatic reasoning of his thoughts to contend with. At fifteen and technically still his subordinate, Annie would have sympathizers here whether she even wanted them or not. People who would think she was a victim in the this; people who wanted to help; people who would stop Levi from trying to interrogate her. People who didn't know his squad, or what she and others like her were responsible of.

There were no titans, and there were no Walls. Only sometimes he couldn't help but to despise this place. ]

You might be with the Military Police, but he's still your superior.

[ It was of, course, bullshit and it wasn't as though Levi could appeal to her sense of duty and honor. Especially not in a city in downtown Florida as far removed from all they knew as one could get. He already started back up the pier - expecting her to follow. Not once had he taken his eyes off Annie. They were both walking on eggshells here. ]

Of course you'd have questions; we can do our best to help you.

[ All which suited her just fine. Annie didn't have the kind of world to cultivate and endure here that she'd been gearing up for most her life back home. There was nothing he could learn here that would translate back to where they were from, where Annie was an untouchable element of the world, encased in crystal. ]

I was unaware he was so moved by sentiment.

[ More bullshit, and they both knew it. Annie was no more part of the military now than she was anything else - except the registered. That exception is what was easiest when she arrived.

Yet still she follows now. That, too, is easier in the longrun, trailing after Levi until she matched pace with him to catch up. ]

The offer's appreciated, but unnecessary. I'm sure you both have other pressing concerns.
