TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[He stands upright, smiling weakly. At least she was friendly.]

Just now gettin' used to the idea that all this technology isn't bad, and all of a sudden a whole City of it just slaps me in the face. It's a little bit of a shock for me.

[She turns to regard the, uh... flying cars and stuff that he's referring to.]

The technology? Oh, yeah... I've never seen anything like this. It's kind of cool, isn't it?

[He shakes his head]

I mean, do they need all this?

Well... I guess it depends what you mean by "need."

[She watches the cars go by and does a little thinking on the topic.]

It's important to be able to get from place to place, but... well, the cars don't fly where I'm from.

[He looks from the cars and back at her, eyes wide]

You've been in one of those?

[everylittlething]

[Oh, whoa whoa whoa.]

Uh, well... not in one of those. Not the flying ones.

I've been in a car though. My friend's mother drives me home from school sometimes. Daddy can't drive and I don't fit on his bicycle anymore, see.

Mm... One that flies really does seem kinda out there. 'Been in an airship before and it was unreal.

[He laughs a little]

If I had to choose, I'd stay on the ground.

An airship? Is that like an airplane? Or is it like a ship that flies in the air?

[She hasn't really caught on yet that he isn't going to know what that is, either.]

Me too, for the most part. Unless it's part of my act, I like my own two feet on the ground.

[He blinks, happily welcoming the change of conversation]

[Hey, good choice. Trucy can't resist talking about her act.]

Yep! I'm a magician. Professional, too, even though I'm young.

[He smiles]

That's impressive! What kind of magic do you know how to do?

Oh, all sorts. Card tricks, illusions, escape artistry, knife-throwing... [Daddy doesn't know she's been practicing that just yet...]

There's some I'm practicing now too, that my grandfather left me, but I can't do any of those just yet. They're not ready for the stage.

Ah, so it's a family thing?

Yep! My grandfather, my mother, and my first daddy were all magicians too!

[Aaaaand they're all dead sort of because of it.]

My new Daddy isn't a magician though. So it's up to me to carry on the Gramarye family legacy!
