TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[ That's an easy thing to agree to; Reiner nods as well, that hint of tension not yet leaving his face. He should feel more relieved that they can live in relative peace here, shouldn't he--? No need for missions, or lies, or...

He frowns, his head beginning to hurt, and touches his own maneuvering gear as if doing so will help him think more clearly. ]

At least that part's easy. A soldier's always prepared even when he's standing down. [ He feels better, saying that. ] After all, if we're here, maybe anything -- but it's still better than what we'd be dealing with anywhere else. It's too bad the rest of the squad can't be here to see all this.

I'm sure it's most likely only a matter of time. [but Erwin isn't going to count on the others to show up, he'll work with what he has at the moment.]

But I'm pleased to hear that, this world has many luxuries and comforts we could only dream of having back home.

[soldiarity]

[ Reiner nods absently, looking around again -- the noise of the cars gets to him a bit, but air despite its humidity smells fresh, faintly salty. He smiles faintly. ]

Are you considering an early retirement, Commander? Who knows -- this might be the only chance.

[Erwin's expression becomes hardened then as he looks at Reiner. Retired? He couldn't even begin to think of such a possibility. Soldiers in the Survey Corps certainly did not retire early, or usually at all even.]

Our circumstances may be different in this world, we may not be fighting the Titans but we are still soldiers and we will continue to fight against any threats against humanity's existence here.

[So, no. Nice try.]

[soldiarity]

[ Blinking slowly, Reiner says: ]

Uh. [ Then: ] Well -- yeah, you're right, we have an example to set. No matter what, we got to uphold our duties and stick to our mission.

[ No, that isn't quite right... ]

A mission.

The mission we all undertake in the Survey Corps.

[Erwin's tone is stern, this time he stops to look at Reiner directly. Ever since the discovery of Annie as a Titan Shifter, they had been looking at the 104th training group a little more closely. But Erwin only kept the other's gaze for a moment before they're moving once more, across the street, his back to Reiner as he expects the other to follow.]

[soldiarity]

[ Reiner looks back and nods in affirmation, this time without any sort of hesitation, and keeps following. He's not sure if he said something wrong or if he only said something stupid, but either way he should be more careful.

He rubs at his temples and wipes sweat from his forehead, and exhales a brief laugh. ]

Sorry, Commander. That was pretty dumb of me. Guess I shouldn't try to make jokes when I'm nervous...

The heat, it takes some time to adjust.

[Erwin remarked as he noticed the sweat on Reiner's brow. He had had his own unfortunate experience with the hot Florida sun already.]

I take it you too were given new abilities here as well. [He nods at the apology but he's already moving onto the next subject.]

[soldiarity]

[ The heat is bad, although he is probably built a little better to handle it than Erwin is -- but it's different than titan heat. More... suffocating.

He undoes a couple of shirt buttons before he recalls the file he'd been given, which contained information sensitive enough that somehow the sheet had ended up all torn up. ]

I don't know what I'm going to do with them, it's nothing that different from what I could do before. Being strong is a skill, not an ability. So be it, though... I'll figure it out.

[Erwin said with a nod. They can go over the particulars later, once he and Levi have a chance to give an overview of the situation.]

I just trust you will not let such skills go to waste, even if we are not fighting Titans here.
