TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Yuri can think of several people he would prefer take Kotetsu's place, but such wishful thinking is beneath him. He accepts what is, though not without a hint of disapproval in his gaze.]

Mr. Kaburagi. [The tone reflects his disapproval and almost seems to suggest that he is not at all surprised to find Kotetsu being unhelpful.] It would be greatly appreciated if you didn't enable their wild imaginations.

[A child tugs on the judge's sleeve and Yuri glances downward at the boy and the wrinkling fabric of his suit jacket. A barrage of guesses at his powers follows soon after, at which Yuri can only sigh.]

I have told them half a dozen times that I don't know what they're talking about, but they don't listen. Did you put them up to this, I wonder?

[Because you seem awfully amused, Wild Tiger.]

[He almost forgot what a sourpuss you always are, man. You'd think a guy would find it exciting to have children happy to see them, geez. Who even doesn't like kids?? Kotetsu huffs a little at the accusation.]

Nah, they get this fired up about every imPort. And it's not just imagination--everyone gets powers here. Didn't you read your file yet?

[Alas, Yuri has not forgotten how irredeemably unprofessional you can be, Kotetsu.]

[Apologizing to one of the young boys, Yuri wriggles his arm free and collects an attache sitting next to him on the ground. The files within are best kept close, particularly if they reveal the nature of his home world powers, or even powers originating here.]

I only just arrived, Mr. Kaburagi. [Using his free hand, the judge smooths out the lapels of his suit jacket and then fixes the Hero with something of a wry smirk.] Reading that kind of delicate information in public would be irresponsible, besides. You didn't make that mistake, did you?

[To be fair, he didn't actually read his file immediately, either, mostly because he was too busy freaking out at the soldiers about the 'kidnapped to another dimension' thing.]

Fine, fine. But you are gonna have powers, so you should read it soon. 'Specially before anything has a chance to happen, yeah? There was one guy that accidentally started a fire in their place 'cause they weren't used to their new powers yet.

[oh the irony here. so much irony that poor kotetsu is unaware of.]

Oi, and lemme know if you need someone to practice with!

[So like you, Kotetsu. Wearing your emotions plain as day upon your sleeve. Sometimes Yuri wonders if you ever stop to consider exactly how far that gets you.]

You sound so certain. It isn't possible that my numerous areas of expertise are what have landed me here?

[He doesn't give the Hero any time to answer.]

Whatever it is, I doubt that it will prove itself problematic. I am well versed in the kinds of internal struggles that Heroes face when it comes to their powers. I've worked closely with them for long enough, after all.

[Then, so as not to seem rude...]

I do thank you for the offer, however. I will keep it in mind. [A beat, and Yuri adds in a quieter voice...] Are there changes with your own powers, Mr. Kaburagi?
