mama always said
It's Mother's Day and I have questions that need answers.
It's simple: What is your character's relationship like with their mother?
If they don't have one, do they have any mother-like figures in their life? How is their relationship? Do they get along? Does your character have deep seated mommy issues? How do they celebrate Mother's Day if it exists in their universe?
Talk as much as you want about it!

so, trolls aren't raised by their biological parents, but by a lusus naturae, pretty much an animal from their world conditioned for the job. kanaya's was a mother grub, which looks like this. they're basically thirty-foot moths that serve as an intermediary in troll reproduction, basically incubators that the whole process is dependent on. they were close, she loved her mother a lot. when kanaya's lusus died shortly before their world was destroyed, she cut a matriorb out of its gut, which is pretty much an egg that will hatch a new mother grub, so that they can continue their species beyond nigh-extinction.
well, eridan destroyed the matriorb then killed kanaya. kanaya got better (and killed him), but without it her race is effectively extinct. the grub that would've hatched from it would have been like a daughter to her, the way her lusus was her own mother.
so, of the two trolls in game, if karkat is the second coming of troll jesus, kanaya is the virgin mary (who's his not-sister instead of his mother, it's a weird analogy), except she was a thirteen-year-old gay alien with a passive-aggressive streak and a terrible sense of self worth who had the alien equivalent of a miscarriage before becoming a vampire. it's been almost four years, but she isn't anywhere close to being over it. you can take for granted that she is avoiding the issue of what day it is entirely.
then you have her biological ancestor, the dolorosa, who left the alternian brooding caverns (where trolls of kanaya's caste served as stewards to the mother grubs and facilitated the hatching of their young) to act as adoptive lusus to karkat's ancestor, he grew up to be a quasi-messianic revolutionary before the empire killed them all. kanaya doesn't know anything about them, but she did meet the ghost of an alternate universe version of dolorosa, porrim. basically kanaya has a hot mom who's basically everything she wishes she was and she's a bit insecure around her, but they got along okay.

Booster's mom is deeeaaaad in the 25th century but she raised him and his sister on her own! Her health condition is the reason he started betting on his own football games to make money. She disowned him for it and he never saw her again! YAY

OKAY so Hope's dad was a high-level government employee THAT MEANT WORKING 24-7 NO LIFE FOR YOU MISTER and also no family life either and for as long as Hope can remember his father's never been around so uh. Kinda feeling abandoned and neglected here dad. But thankfully his mom was housewife (or so i headcanon)! She's always around so that means she loved him! Not like that jerk!!
Cue turning into a mama's boy. Mom mom mom can we go here can we do this can i have pocket money so i can buy me one of those bomerangs all the cool athletes and hunters have? Yes son you can and btw it's MAY not CAN. So she did pretty all right, and Hope adored her and would have thought she hung the moon if Cocoon's sky wasn't generated by eldritch abominations. But then he started hating his own dad because... obvious reasons.
Then one day he and his mom went on a trip to the beach!! But the trip was cut short when another eldritch abomination, this time from the outside world, was discovered in the city and the military rounded everyone into trains in order to kill them all. His mom joined the resistance and tried to get him home but the platform she was standing on got shot by a gunship and exploded before crumbling to the ground which was a far way down. Some giant blond dude who's the leader of the resistance held onto her hand and tried to get her up but she was prety much dead at that point (but not before imparting her final wishes) and he fell too anyway.
Oh and Hope watched the entirety of this from his own platform. Yeah. He's pretty much scarred for life.
And there's his replacement goldfish mom/big sis, Lightning. That is an entirely new can of worms 8'| She took care of him, taught him to be tough, brought him home to his dad, took care of him more when they had unfinished business with all the eldritch abominations wanting to murder all the humans and then he remembers her dying even though she was actually just dragged into a dimension outside the timestream but his memories were messed with to make him think she died.
Aaaaaaand he spent the next thirteen years wanting EVERYONE BACK and is willing to do lots of things. Like change time itself.

Troy's mom is never really mentioned, but there's mention on his dad having a girlfriend, so idk his parents are divorced. He doesn't seem to be super-close to either of them, but he also doesn't seem to have any particularly negative issues. Shirley is not his mom.
Laurie was conceived under manipulated pretenses due to her father's identical power-set of pheromone emission. He basically forced Laurie's mother, Gail, to love him, but the effects of his pheromones faded when she became pregnant. She left him, kept the baby, and worked hard to support the both of them. Laurie, who grew up largely isolated and very shy, is very close to her mother. When she started attending the Xavier Institute, her mother moved from Connecticut to New York so that Laurie would have somebody trusted close-by. Gail often attended school functions and was very involved by parent-of-mutant standards.

LINKING TO A MILLION PANELS bc I can't help myself
SO BASICALLY, Jaime is a total momma's boy. Mama Reyes has taken great pains to make sure that Jaime knows how supportive she is of him, whether he's gay or straight or if he happens to be running around in a dumb blue bugsuit. It's only natural that Jaime responds to that kind of support with love and respect, and he ends up telling her (and his whole family) about the whole superhero thing as soon as he possibly could; she's an integral part of his life, and he refuses to include her only in one facet of his life. In fact, once he and the Teen Titans are about to face down an enemy that has a good chance of killing them all, Jaime's first response is to pack his things and go home to hug his mom beforehand. His reaction to missing the 'S' on Supergirl's chest is that his mother taught him not to stare, and his reaction to any bursts of rudeness on the field are quickly mitigated with 'please don't tell my mom I said that'. He's too cool for school.
(The respect, by the way, is completely warranted. One does not simply disrespect Bianca Reyes, a woman capable of cowing Green Lanterns, subduing vigilantes and just being generally awesome... when she's not participating in Reyes family group hugs.)
For mother's day, Mama Reyes would be the recipient of the traditional home-cooked breakfast and flowers from Jaime and his younger sister, something that she likely received since Jaime was old enough to walk. tl;dr jaime is an embarrassing mama's boy and his mother is 100000x cooler than he is.

farbauti was loki's birth mother and we see a little bit of her here and there and no one can agree on what she looks like (SURPRISE). basically he was a tiny sassy frost giant before he went back into the past and talked to himself and manipulated his father (laufey) into going into battle, dying, before he was then taken in by odin. mckelvie decided that she was crazy huge with big icicles for hair. there really wasn't much there aside from the little frost giant loki's unkind words about her (and everything else, tbh). and at a young age he thought he was better than everyone else, thank you loki.
so fast forward, and you have kid loki and his role and being blackmailed by the all-mother, the tri-head matriarch of asgard consisting of the goddesses idunn, gaea and freyja. they simultaneously had kid loki do some dirty work for the good of asgardia and took him under their wing as their son. so he was kind of a thirteen year old superspy diverting wars and getting sent to bed without supper. THEY LOVE/D HIM VERY MUCH, and he really cared for them. they were his acting mother, and kid loki didn't remember anything about his other mother. so he just integrated himself as part of asgard and acted as their son. of course until tragedy had fallen and loki wiped other loki away and took his role.
THIS IS IMPORTANT BECAUSE a lot of loki's feelings about others stem from the role that he forced himself into. so while his other asshole self that technically took the role has little love for authority (mothers included), the combination of the role and kid loki's feelings for the all-mother shift his viewpoint into something completely new. he now has a quid pro quo relationship with her where she wipes part of his past to ensure that he's able to write his own future. ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. he no longer has much of a desire to un-throne anyone as much as he just wants to run around and be his selfish jerk self. so while he's still kind of taken under their wing (and it's debatable or not that he know about the shit that he's pulled), he's still their ocean's 11 (all of it. all ocean's 11.) and their acting underhanded agent. he definitely has some degree of hesitant affection for them where he definitely didn't before. (even though he's. himself. about it.) how strangeeee.
anyway, there's a little bit of rebellion going on because there's some issues happening where what he thinks she's doing isn't exactly right and it's starting to encroach on his freedoms ... fun fun fun fun.

Once, as a ghost haunting their old house who saved him and told him "I'm sorry" and nothing more.
And later, he time traveled with his brother and met her as a young woman, and she had no idea who she was.
Due to the pedestal his father and Dean put her on growing up, she's almost like a saint in his eyes. He tears up when he meets her as a young woman, because he's finally meeting the woman who's death his family has been trying to avenge for years, the woman who must be perfect in every way because his family said so, and she has no idea who she is.
Basically, Sam loves his mother, even though he was too young to remember her when she died. (Although, there may be some tension in his thoughts since she basically caused Sam to have demon blood as a baby in order for a demon to bring her husband back to life.)

From Jesse's point of view, she's a total bitch who made him homeless when he really needed her, and before that she made his life a living hell by piling all these unreasonable expectations on him and criticizing him for, like, everything ever.
The truth is, she only ever wanted him to succeed in school and get a good job someday, and she was strict and overbearing, and she didn't quite pay enough attention to Jesse's strengths (art, for instance) or weaknesses (that he probably had ADHD and that's why he had so much trouble focusing in school and opted to self-medicate with stimulants).
There's a lot of blame to go around when it comes to this relationship. Anyway, she's disowned him now. But he did eventually blackmail her into giving him back his house. Jesse Pinkman: world's greatest son.

Kenzi grew to resent her mother because she always took her stepfather's side, began running away when she was 14/15 or so. She always believed that her mother took her stepfather's side because she was just as afraid of him but later realized that no, it was because she's actually just as terrible a person as her stepfather.
Needless to say they don't talk.

She's the one that taught him how to be a witch and just about everything else he needed to know in life. She's the one he goes to if he's ever unsure about something. She's not that happen about her baby being a vampire but at least she's getting grandkids so that softened the blow a little.
Cy talks to her as often as he can on the phone since he doesn't get the chance to travel much. He really misses her here but it's not like he was dependent on her back home.

You can say the Survey Corps is like his family, family he looks after and then sends out on dangerous missions with a high morality rate. Fun times.

If he ever ran into his mother, it'd be a very tense and awkward situation. It's not something he ever wants to happen.

In later years he was adopted by the Nightray dukedom, so Duchess Bernice Nightray is his adoptive mother. They have no relationship and the adoption wasn't out of the good of the Duke's heart. They needed a contractor for Raven, plain and simple. It's depicted the adoptive Nightray boys got physical with Gil at least once (maybe a couple of times), but Bernice was never in the picture to intervene and I doubt she would have cared much. I don't imagine Gil's ever sat down and had a proper conversation with her and anyway, after some of the murders she joined a cult (yes really) and lost touch with reality, I doubt it was ever possible. She was killed (accidentally intentionally) by Elliot and while I imagine Gil feels a bit sorry, it's more of the situation than actually caring about her personally.

Connors: no fucking clue
Starscream: no fucking clue
THE LONGER ANSWER is that Hans probably has an absolutely shitty relationship with his parents because youngest of thirteen/he has major issues & Starscream doesn't have a parental figure because Transformers is complicated and I'm still not entirely sure how/if robots grow.
and, of course, no fucking clue for Connors

Earth-2's Lois Lane was her maternal figure... then she forgot about her for a while, it's complicated. While Lois was her cousin-in-law, she acted as more of an aunt/mother figure and Peej was very close with her. She loved Lois and was conflicted when she discovered Lois was sick and dying and the only possible solution was to bring back their original universe. It seems they got along for the most part and Lois never appeared to pressure her into thinking the shady plan was the right thing to do. So when Lois (and Superman) died, Peej took it hard. All she wants now is for Lois to rest peacefully in her grave, as much as she misses her.

Adam, the first angel and the Mother of all Angels, one day was found by humans and humans fucked everything up; they destroyed Adam's body that reverted back into an embryonic stage and grabbed Adam's soul and placed it inside a vessel (half human, half angel) that is Kaworu Nagisa aka Tabris.
he does want to return to Adam (fuse again with the embryo, so he can have his body back) but it's all very instinctive rather than feelings being involved. he has no love for "Adam" (neither his siblings) and works on "things are the way they are" and "things must be the way they are meant to be".

Yeah, we have ZERO INFORMATION on Shinjiro's mother, only that he was already at the orphanage when Akihiko arrived (When they were like three or four.) So I assume she's either dead, or she was super young and gave the kid up, who knows.
He's not terribly broken up about it. :T And has no desire to look for any records that might have survived the fire or whatever because wow what a bunch of unnecessary bullshit, okay. Like hell he wants to bust up into someone's life and be like "Hey I think I came out of your vagina and then you left me with a bunch of strangers almost two decades ago, sup."
blood relations are not a big deal to him.

Her mom is a blonde, she travels for work a lot, she's wealthy as fuq, and in Ruka's memory her mom's face is shadowed out and indistinct. End series canon has Ruka and her twin brother Rua moving out of the country (presumably to England) at age 13 to live with their parents.
In the manga, her mom is dead (so's her dad) and the twins live on the streets.
