TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

While some people would have found the occasional request for a photo or a handshake uncomfortable, Barnaby wears the extra attention like a second skin. That isn't to say he basks in it, exactly, but giving natural-looking smiles and reading strangers well enough to know what to say in an awkward situation are just a couple of skills he had to learn back home.

Still, he inwardly wishes he hadn't agreed to meet someone in such a public place, particularly when someone insists on giving him a free root beer float. He's not in the mood for one, but he doesn't think it would be proper to waste it, especially with other patrons watching.

So, he does the next best thing, and turns toward the person closest to him, intending to see whether they'd like to take the treat off of his hands. Unfortunately, that person -- a large man with a rather conspicuous-looking shirt and a lizard draped around his broad shoulders -- already has a drink in hand.

There's a moment when Barnaby locks eyes with the stranger, but he merely offers a silent, polite smile before looking for someone else to pawn the float onto.

[ Well, well, well this place is turning serendipitous as hell. The last thing he expects to see is his former partner outside of Stern Bild. The man looks ready to ask him something and Ryan is more than willing to soak up the surprise, or Barnaby's version of surprise anyway. Then the questions will flow, it's unavoidable, but Ryan is used to them. But then the moment passes and he starts walking off.

Wow. Harsh. ]

Hey, what's with the cold shoulder, Junior?

[ Not that he's so easily offended, but he sure's curious now. ]

[The question gives Barnaby pause, and he stops long enough to glance over his own shoulder with faintly furrowed eyebrows.]

I may have misheard you, but did you just call me "Junior"?

You're a long way from Stern Bild. Think it's a little late to have come to your sense, though, sorry. Already picked up a new contract.

[ He's joking, of course. He knows he wouldn't just leave his boyfriend, but hey! A man can dream can't he? Especially after how well they worked together... ]

[Placing a hand on his hip, he turns to fully face this man, studying him with an intense gaze. That face looks a little familiar, but he can't quite place where he saw him. Maybe a poster somewhere, but...]

My apologies, but do I know you? I don't recall ever having met before.
