TEST DRIVE MEME

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

No, I get it. I don't like it much either, I mean-- [ He pauses, feeling guilty if he's worrying her, though wanting to find the right words to express himself. ] I don't hate it here or anything, but not knowing if you'll see home again... who wants that?

[ He pauses, then adds: ]

Sorry.

[she moves to hold her hands up in front of her chest, the gesture perhaps not entirely correct for the situation but the closest thing to physically reassuring a stranger that she can think of. Hazel may be wound tighter than a top in situations like this, but she doesn't like to worry people very much]

There's nothing to be sorry for! If that's how it is, that's how it is.

[she chuckles a little awkwardly, trying to brighten up the conversation]

I'm used to having my schedule planned without being consulted anyway, so it's nothing new. Just a lot hotter this time around.

[ A little surprised, Reiner raises his eyebrows and offers her a mild smile in return, as well as a nod. ]

I hate to be the bearer of bad news regardless. If it is bad news -- not everyone minds.

What's in Chicago, anyway?

[Hazel might very well be one of those people, depending on how things eventually settle. she has no interest in going back to being under that bitch's thumb, but on the other hand it's difficult to just let go the possibility that she left Damien on his own in the middle of all that bullshit.]

The friend I was traveling with before this all happened, if I'm lucky. And maybe the job I was supposed to do, but I kind of doubt that followed me over.

[it's a big enough gamble to hope that Damien's here. she's not going to be (un)lucky enough to have all of the other people she was supposed to investigate roll through this world too]

[ So far, Reiner is undecided on that front; there are a lot of things preferable about this world, to his. But the few things that aren't are big things, important and painful to be apart from. He tries not to think about it too much. ]

Probably not. Sometimes people follow, but I don't think anything else does. Everything else is like a fresh start -- that's what it's been like to me.

[ He smiles a little more sincerely, though it's still faint, and shrugs his shoulders. ]

It's not so bad, though. Really.

[her shoulders slump a little, almost imperceptibly. it's a huge weight off her shoulders to know that she won't be taking orders from anyone from herself, but...she'd gotten so used to having Damien around. being alone again wasn't something she was looking forward to.]

I hope not! I don't have the best track record with fresh starts.

[she laughs a little ruefully, tucking some stray strands of hair behind an ear. boy, was that an understatement. but soon enough Hazel regains a little more levity and adds a teasing comment to her reply to keep things from getting too heavy.]

And after talking this place up so much I'll be holding you responsible if things go bad.

Hey, hey, it's not me.

[ He puts up his hands, laughing slightly. At least she's taking things well; Reiner at least doesn't want to be responsible for a new person having a terrible first day. ]

I don't love it any more than the next person, believe me. It could be worse, that's all. [ He tilts his head slightly. ] Do you want something cold to drink?

Um!

[Hazel doesn't drink. she doesn't even have the organs to drink with even if she did. but she's also trying to keep that fact and everything it entails under wraps; this world may love superheroes, but she was no hero, and she'd rather not have people look at her any differently.

on the other hand, it was stupidly hot out here, from everything she could tell. it would be weird to decline something like that, especially from someone who's conversation she's enjoying. it's probably worth the possible need for a stomach pump (or...whatever medical equipment would get that out) to just go along with things]

Only if you don't mind being paid back later. Cash definitely did not hop through the dimensional rift with me.

[and she kind of. declined the military offer thing with all its benefits. whoops.]
