TAKES A DEEP FUCKING BREATH.

Duo means more to D33 than he will ever realize. The parallels between Duo and Royce (for D33, anyway) are extremely significant, and it's created a bond between D33 and Duo that lends to it being heavily one-sided and borderline obsessive. When D33 first entered Mask or Menace, he was, for arguably the first time ever, left with no one to control him and, thereby, no one to guide him. Being told what to do and how to do it is the only life he's ever known and, as much as he hates Royce and the life that he lived back home, it provided him the structure he needed to make it through day to day where he has no personal goals or drive to do that himself. Duo took D33 under his wing (let them try to take that pun away from us) from day one and made quite a point of giving him advice in a...less than gentle way. D33 seriously doubted and, in a way, feared Duo from the very beginning. His apparent affiliation with religion was a huge red flag and his general teasing, holier than thou (hue HUE) attitude REALLY set D33 off. But, what eventually separated Duo from Royce in D33's mind was when Duo showed genuine human kindness and concern with him. Duo genuinely cares about D33 and wants what's best for him as a human being which is something that D33 just can't wrap his mind around. This is why he's blindly loyal to Duo and acts as if he's a subordinate, ready to take orders, rather than an equal or fellow soldier. In a way, he wants Duo to be in charge of him because that's all he knows, and - here it is - the fact of the matter is, D33 mourns Royce's absence as it was the strongest bond he'd ever had, toxic and evil as that "bond" was. Duo gives D33 all the things that Royce gave him with none of the pain and torture, so. Truthfully, that lends to D33 being 100% enamored and infatuated with Duo, unwittingly idolizing him in the same way that Royce always wanted to be idolized.

It's a big fuckin' mess.
