TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[She perks up a bit at that. Her voice is a bit skeptical, but there's an interest there.]

[Okay that's the last she's bringing up Wally she promises. But geesh that is a long time ago, and not at the same time. Only a couple weeks before her father brought her to the Cave for the first time.]

Okay so how about I change and then we have a girls day? I haven't really seen much of this place yet. Or we can see if we can find a gym and I'll hold the punching bag for you.

[The way the awkward teenager was behaving made it painfully obvious that he was a new arrival. It was the norm here to fawned over by random pedestrians on the street thanks to being branded as a "Hero". His distress showed how foreign the situation was to him.]

[Touma could understood the teenager's insistence on not wanting to sign the baseball. He probably found the attention enthusiastically given to him to be both unnecessary and unwanted. That was how he felt when he first arrived here and even though it has lessened over time, it still bothered him.]

[Being slightly more familiar with inter-planetary, let alone international, infiltration, Aya did not see so much of the same problems Wally did.]

Is that our primary objective? To obtain information?

...I have succeeded in similar missions in the past. [Well, she got caught, and was severely damaged, but she did get them the data. So that counted as a success.]

[ She leans back in her seat — but this time discomfort isn't the motivator, this time it's a show of considering him. She even rubs her chin for full effect. ]

How about... Two-Face. [ She says it easily, like she really had just made it up on the spot. ] Get it? I mean — yeah, so maybe two faces goes for anyone in a cape and a mask, but it's got a ring.

[ Just kidding, that's one of the worst names she could think of. But it will serve as another (not so) little test. ]

I was in a band when I was younger. [ Of course, younger for him was the 1960s--but hey, still technically younger! Grin on his face, Dorian held out his hands like he was showing off a marquee sign. ] Dorian Gray and the Hedonists. I'd like to think we were alright. Of course, we never became one of those big name bands, but we at least got some touring in.

Fair enough descriptors, but in the end, completely irrelevant. Your statement made the assumption that I wouldn't take kindly to "reexamination" in the first place. An assumption, I should add, that's rather hasty given our short conversation. It implies that I'm narrow-minded and wouldn't objectively consider someone else's opinion.

[One would think a normal person would apologize for such a transgression. Shiki is not one of those persons and instead sips her now melted ice cream combined with her soda.]

Huh. It's a bit better now that it's melted.

I'm not new here. I've seen evidence of the same. One is not gullible when one sees evidence.

[She stands up and turns to exit, but not without a light wave to Light without facing him.]

[His reply is flat, a display of seemingly genuine ignorance. His poker face is remarkable.]

Cool. [And it is, even if he says so a bit reluctantly. He always takes a while to warm up to new superheroes his age. Might be his competitive streak, might be he's just naturally distrustful of other teenagers..]

Kid Flash shifts his weight and leans up against a drinking fountain, giving her a newly appraising look.] So you're part of the team? What's your name? [He's already got a hunch considering what he knows about the league, what with the magician thing and all, but better to confirm than to look dumb. Again.]

[There's a low hum of understanding as he reaches to rub the back of his neck. He'd been pretty vocal about his distaste for the registration act back at home, and he thought they had left all of that behind. He's really not all that eager to repeat something like that.

So he focuses on the next things she says, because he'd rather talk about teammates than remember Civil War. It's actually not been that long, for him.]
