TEST DRIVE MEME

Considering apping into MASK OR MENACE? Want to dip your toes into the setting and get a feel of whether your character will fit into it? Or maybe you're just cruising and want to play around? Then you've come to the right place!

Pick any of the following scenarios below or feel free to make up your own, but don't be afraid to throw yourself at anyone's thread, either!

01. Your memory is hazy and you might feel increasingly frustrated or anxious, or maybe you're excited as soldiers march past, barely glimpsing you. One second you're somewhere underground, the next you're enveloped in blue light, and suddenly you find yourself directly under Flordia sun's bright and burning glare. A female soldier steps toward you with a wide smile on her face and directs you to a car, ready to debrief you. You realize you are not the only one, surrounded by equally confused or eager faces... and you're all sporting a digital tattoo on your wrist.

02. Welcome to Cape Canaveral, where the smell of the ocean is in the air and locals are more than pleased to see new imPorts roaming their streets. They wave, they cheer, they ask for pictures as politely as they can. The more inhuman you look, or if you're wearing a costume, the more likely locals are to approach. Hey, enjoy the moment! The popular malt shop is offering you a free drink if you need it.

03. The technology in this world is certainly something. The cars are clearly modeled after popular 50s cars, but they hover several feet above the ground as they drive down the street. There are digital jukeboxes in restaurants, motorcycles also hover through traffic, advertisements can be seen on a digital projector on the taller buildings. Even kids on skateboards appear to drift a safe ten feet off the ground while playing!

04. Wherever you are, you can hear the loud revving of an engine, distance at first before you finally see it: a hovercar bursting around the corner, going beyond the maximum speed limit and just barely making its sharp turn. It doesn't appear to be slowing down any time soon, not with two police cars trailing it... and uh oh. Those skateboarding kids don't have much time to get out of the way as the car comes speeding down the road. You've been brought here for a reason Hero — so you better act fast.

[Ryuuko doesn't make a habit out of using cabs considering she's usually pretty broke, and prefers walking in general, but it's balls to the walls hot out so fuck that noise. florida heat whyyyyyy.

anyway she's as lady like as ever with her feet propped up on the divider console and her arms folded behind her head, reclining as much as possible in the back seat of a cab. her gaze is directed out the window, looking at nothing in particular with a fairly uninterested expression. aka car rides are boring. are we there yet??]

[a smartass remark, shouldn't they know how to get from point A to point B? it's kinda their job.... Ryuuko's tone is a bit nastier than usual too, probably because that dumb perky voice reminds her of someone she really hates, if the scowl forming on her face wasn't enough of a hint.

obviously she hasn't bothered to look over at the driver yet or she'd be in full on rage mode, no hints needed.....]

[Yeah, Eli doesn't know who the guy is but as a naturally distrustful person that makes him raise an eyebrow. Still, he just got here and he's being kind of overwhelmed by this whole thing so he'll take any advice he can get.]

Use it how? Do we get free things for wearing a costume?

He turns his attention to the kids for a second- they seem to be safe, and actually pretty excited to have been saved by two heroes (even if Patriot is pretty sure just standing in front of a car and hoping for the best doesn't really count as saving them). Once he's sure they are safe, he looks back at her with a scowl.]

Do I look like a cat to you?

[ she's making sure the kids are scratch-free as well and ignores the first part of his question. once the kids seem more than happy to return to their skateboarding shenanigans, she turns to eli. ]

You look like you just narrowly escaped becoming roadkill.

Yeah I'm not so much worried about success rates as I am about the fact that I don't fight political wars for a reason. Can you imagine how bad it would be if one single country got their hands on just one of you guys? [Wally shakes his head.] Nope. That's why we've gotta be impartial. Mostly.

Better to stick to the grown up ones, right?

[It's offered with a faint smile, but leave it to America to get right to business. Kate waves her off for a moment.]

And believe it or not, the Young Avengers all had tracking devices implanted in the back of their necks so I wouldn't lose anyone again. The real reason for that party. [She lets that hang for a moment.] But really, I'm a fan of the malt shop. Have you tried it yet?

Nope.

[Iron Man, Iron Man... nope, not ringing a bell. Once he gets back home, he's going to sit down with an encyclopedia and read about every single active superhero, he swears to god.

(He's totally never going to do that.)]

Who's he? A dude who can turn his skin into iron, or something?

[Wow you're not his friend, Dio.]

They do.

[Pushes his glasses up. Like a nerd.]

[Well she couldn't exactly justify potentially changing future events could she? He'll just have to find out for himself.] Zatanna...Zatara. In case my first name doesn't give it all away to start with.

I guess they wouldn't be, [Jaime says slowly. Right. Robot. She probably didn't need to listen to all that stuff about where to find everything regular old humans need to live.]

Basically, they've ported you into their own universe as... I dunno, some sort of emergency resource? And nobody's been able to find a way back yet.

[Jaime shoves his hands into his pockets, considering that he could have phrased that a bit better. Still, it's the truth - she'd need to find out about it sooner rather than later, right?]

[His only friend is his priest boyfriend ok. But he did that laugh anyway.]

A shame, because I, Dio, would be lying if I said I wasn't curious.

Perhaps one day you can tell me about them, if you ever feel so inclined.

[He's not stupid enough to think of asking.]

Offering to be someone I vent to on the first meeting? Sounds more like someone who has no personal interest in me and more in my secrets.

[He knows because HE PULLS THE SAME SHIT. Dio might not be stupid enough to do the obvious, but Houka's smart enough to still know the difference.]

[Haha WELL AREN'T YOU SMART YOU LITTLE SHIT.]

So what if I was? Is your immediate assumption I'd use that kind of information for something unsavory?

We miiiiiight want to leave. [He doesn't outright dislike police officers, but there's a reason he took up what's basically vigilantism... and he knows by experience how sidetracked they can get when there's a hero around.]

The spell. The spell to give all mutants their powers back, even if they might not actually want them back.

I could have handled it. [Maybe. Probably. He's pretty sure no one would have gotten hurt but himself anyway, and he thinks that's not too bad.]

Oh, shit. We're in some alternate Earth or something aren't we?

[Yeah, that's what he takes from that. There's some heroes he could have totally believed someone hadn't heard of. But Iron Man? Not possible.]

No, he's- he's got an armor, like yours. ...Except red, I guess, and it looks less like a bug.

Oh, yeah, and trust me, it beats the alternative. [Which is shockingly not homelessness, but she's not going to clarify.] We've had to settle in, since it doesn't seem like we'll be heading anywhere anytime soon.

[ He's good, but he's not that good. The pain of Harvey's death is too fresh in his heart. There's guilt and regret, and it shows. At first Bruce's smile just freezes in place, and then he looks away as he gathers himself. He echoes the name with absolutely no inflection at all. ]

Two-Face.

[ And if there's any fun in the game, it's instantly dematerialised. Bruce is serious, his smile gone when he confronts her again. There's no more pretense, no dodging around the questions. Nobody should know that name; the only people who did were either dead or sworn to secrecy. ]

Where did you hear that name?

I assume everyone would use that kind of information for something unsavory until they prove otherwise.

Because that's what you'd do?

[ Hurting him wasn't really the intention there — but shocking him, that was. And when the smile goes, he suddenly looks that much more like her Bruce. She doesn't move, but suddenly looks much more alert, even excited, and watches him closely. ]

A birdie told me. [ Like he'd settle for that answer. She doesn't know this version, but she knows that much. So she adds: ] The kind that doesn't chirp in public.

[ And gentle emphasis on the last word, in lieu of glancing at the tables around them. Just because no one's paying attention doesn't mean they're at all safe from an audience. ]

Maybe.

[His mouth tugs into a smirk, becoming visible as it does, although from the mouth up it's still incredibly difficult to see the rest of his face.

Maybe that's just his power ~~it is not his power~~.]

Interesting. Now I'm beginning to see what you meant, boy.

[Which he does't mind sharing this information if it means Dio won't call him boy.]
